Does this help us in anyway landing Heuerman?

Cant hurt could be a situation where Baugh thought he should commit before Heuerman
To make sure he had a spot, Miami landed a good TE last week also

Gotta figure their taking this kid means they like him better than or equally to Heuerman... I'd say this pretty much means its down to us and Miami. This makes me feel a lot better about our chances

The way I see it ...

Urban knows he isn't getting Heuerman, so he played a mind trick on this kid saying commit before Heuerman does. Might as well use it while you can I spose.

Rivals has him as the #5 TE, #114 player nationally. Nothing to sneeze at.

Looks like this was a surprise to OSU fans, leads me to believe he defiantly wanted to be Heuerman

Miami got Dobrard #15 TE
OSU got Baugh #3 TE

Per Buckeye Grove on College Sports: Rivals.com, Ohio State plans to take two tight ends in this class. No effect on Mike Heuerman expected.

No effect on numbers but effect on the psyche I would think signing a player ranked higher

Wishful thinking.

It'll be Josh McNeil who is the odd man out for OSU.

Unless we can somehow get McNeil to commit.....hmmm.....

Hard time believing there is no effect when a team you're looking at takes someone rated higher than you at your position.

It's interesting to me because why would you go to a school with 6 TEs (if you sign), a worse education, and that hasn't currently shown any ability to use any of the TEs on the roster effectively... versus a school that didn't even take a TE in last year's class and will have put 4 straight TEs in the NFL as top 2 round picks when you sign? Unless you really want to play with your brother (at the same position?) and/or buy the BS Urban sells.... I just don't see it logically adding up.

With that being said, I thought he was an OSU stone cold lock before power hour yesterday and I'll go ahead and stick with that.

The thing that troubles me most is that he said he is very close with Aaron Lynch and that he talks to him ~3 times a week and that Lynch was "very honest" with him.

With all that has happened in the past week, does that hurt us? Maybe. Let's say on one hand his brother loves OSU and on the other hand his close friend Aaron Lynch is not a happy camper... that probably has a big impact.

I dunno... I guess we'll see in a couple weeks.

Urban's system is unlike Tressel/Fickel's. The TE will be used much more in the passing game than it was in the last decade so I wouldn't put too much stock in comparing the schools' TE history

That does sound troubling. Hopefully Lynch recognizes not to say anything out of frustration to Heuerman. But who knows. Who do we go after if Heuerman doesn't commit? I'll say our odds are 40% for Heuerman. Not too optimistic...

Meyer can talk about how he coached Aaron Hernandez and Cornelius Ingram

I understand this, and in fact a selling point could be that Urban doesn't like any of the TEs currently on the roster. So let's throw out the history as you suggest.

If I were in his shoes... the school where I'd be the only TE recruited in the past 2 years and is clearly using the TE dominantly in the offense > than the school where I'd be competing against 5 TEs in the past 3 years including my brother and a top TE in my class, and once used Aaron Hernandez (a #1 TE recruit) to a 4th round #113 overall draft pick level.

I just think on every objective level ND is the better choice.

Honestly, Hernandez underperformed in college... and it's revisionist history to say otherwise. #1 recruit at his position in a pass-first spread attack and he ended up being a 4th round draft pick. He's only panning out now in the NFL because he has Brady, Belichik, and Gronk/Welker taking all kinds of defensive attention away from him.

Aaron didn't fall in the draft because of talent or production. He won the Mackey Award as the nation's top TE.

Drafted 4th round due to character concerns, projected 1st round due to talent.

Sure he did. Yeah, some of it was off-the-field issues (who do you blame that on besides Urban and his lack of discipline system discussed in the article yesterday?). But another large part is that he was completely underdeveloped as a blocker and teams didn't know how he would fit in. They thought he would struggle as a traditional tight end and didn't like him enough as a true WR.

Here are some quick draft capsules before I leave for dinner:

"Despite winning the Mackey Award as the nation's best tight end, NFL teams will have to decide if this is the position he'll fit best in the pros. Not big or strong enough to compete as an inline blocker, Hernandez may be asked to move to H-back. What is not questioned is his ability to be a matchup nightmare for defenses. Hernandez may not be the first or second tight end selected in the 2010 draft, but blessed with good quickness as a route-runner, surprising strength and balance after the catch and sticky, reliable hands, he might just be the one making the most immediate impact."

"TE Aaron Hernandez ran 4.58 and 4.63. He did 30 reps at 225 and ran good routes and caught the ball like a wide receiver. He lacks in-line blocking ability and has some off-the-field issues."

It's interesting. Everyone here is making it sound like Urbans got him, but after listening to him on Power Hour last night, he sounded like he was much more interested in LSU to me.

He flunked a drug test prior to the draft did he not (in Urban broke Florida football thread I believe)? Although he is a matchup nightmare with his speed, that asset is enhanced by being lined up opposite Gronk, having one of the top QBs in history throwing to him and having Belichick mastermind some ingenious ways of getting him the ball (as was pointed out in a previous post of yours). He has had problems holding onto the ball on numerous occasions as many Pats fans will attest.

If Huermann decides not to attend ND, it certainly should not be due to a lack of production by the TE in the system that is being run. BK would insure he is developed both as a player and as an individual. Would love for him to decide for the Irish.
