From Inside the Irish.

ELIJAH SHUMATE
High School: Don Bosco Prep — West Orange, New Jersey
Measureables: Six-foot-one, 205-pounds
Other major offers: Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State, Rutgers, South Carolina
Fun Fact: Played at Don Bosco for coach Greg Toal, whose son Brian spurned an offer from Ty Willingham to play for the Irish and instead starred at Boston College.
On choosing Notre Dame: ”I used to be a Michigan and Ohio State man,” Shumate told the Bergen Record. “My Dad always told me if I had a chance to go to college, Notre Dame would be my favorite school.” What he’ll bring to the defense: Shumate looks like a wrecking ball out there, and he’ll immediately join Jamoris Slaughter as one of the most physical players in the secondary. From one look at his offer list, you can see that Shumate’s an elite player and the type of recruit that usually gets Irish fans excited, though his commitment came when people seemed more worried about who was leaving than who was coming on board. Long expected to end up elsewhere, Shumate’s recruiting turned on a dime when he visited Notre Dame, immediately turning his focus to the Irish. He’s also an impressive running back, where the Irish coaching staff has discussed giving him a look as well.

This is why ND should never drop its standards.

@ElijahShumateJust finished my workout . Ran a 4.45 forty with a weight jacket On . ayye.!! trying run this 4.3 by june .#success

In other news, I absolutely love fast safeties. That kind of speed can make up for a lot of errors that inexperience brings along.

According to his ESPN profile he ran a 4.52 forty as a junior. I don't doubt that he runs a 4.4.

I know, right?

I mean they, at scout, had Floyd running a 4.55.

We know that he never could run a 4.48 nfl combine forty...

;)

This argument has no substance without proof regardless.

It's possible he knocked .07 off his time with a year and professional training. (And don't forget he's a Bosco Boy - faster than twitter.)

In fairness to Dillion the timer made have had a weight jacket on this watch thumb.

If he can run like Zibby, if will be fun to watch.

Don't put too much stock into unofficial 40 times. ISD just reported that George Atkinson III ran the fastest 40 on the team at 4.43. I doubt Shumate ran a legit 4.45 with a weight jacket on. Nevertheless, props to him working out today.

That's too bad bery.....that's also why some of us have become jaded over the past 20 years. Some of us remember the great times of ND football, not this 8-5 is a good year and cause for optimism.

You're a shameless homer, but with a good eye for DBs.

Bery, FYI, Burris was a High School All-American RB that Lou Holtz (google him, bery) turned into a college All-American Safety. Holtz also effectively made use of Burris as a RB in his goal line Full House Backfield. Burris had 11 TDs in only 30 touches down by the goal line. He also returned kicks, 1 TD. Averaged about 15 Yds/punt return.

Had Kelly had a Burris, ND would have been at least 11-2 last year. He would have been the starting FS and put punch into ND's Red Zone Offense. When Burris entered the lineup, the entire stadium, home or away, knew ND was going to score.

Zbikowski is my all time favorite player. I still watch that punt return against USC every once in a while.

Best ND safaties I ever saw play were Jeff Burris and Glenn Earl. People sleep on Earl, but he was a beast before he blew his knee out his senior season. He still got picked in the 3rd round.

Jeff was a few years older than me but we went to the same high school. He was an unbelieveable RB in HS. Lou showed up and said you will be a safety and help out on goal line and special teams and Jeff took right to it. Lou recruited athletes and I like that BK is doing the same thing. I think there are several kids on the roster that could pull double duty due to their athleticism but we will see.
