I don't post on this thing very often, but I like reading what people's opinions are, so I've got one for you guys...Why does Cam McDaniel get looked over so much for the RB depth chart next year? Practically everything I read just counts him out, putting GA3 and every other recruit in front of him. He put up some pretty impressive numbers while running the ball in one of the biggest football states in the country. I think he was also labeled as an All-Texas player if I remember correctly. So why no love? This is what I see so far...

RB Depth
Cierre Wood
Theo Riddick*
George Atkinson III*
Cam McDaniel
Cameron Roberson (pending that knee injury. feel bad for the guy)

Then K. Russel and W. Mahone, as long as they sign in FEB. Now personally, I feel Riddick and GA3 should move to the slot and create depth. Great speed and shiftyness for both of them, and the depth beyond Robby Toma is pretty thin. Plus, GA3 doesn't have the size Cam does.

So why write the kid off as being lost in the depth chart? I really hope he has a great spring and works his way into the 3-deep behind Roberson as a good 3rd option to give the other two a breather.

Any thoughts from you gurus?

Cheers,
Murphy

I thought he deserved 4 stars based on his productivity v. the competition he played, but here are two reasons I don't think he projects behind GAIII:

1) He is not nearly as fast
2) He was 19 his senior year of high school and is incredibly hard working. To me, this combination means you won't see a ton of physical development. I think 200-210 is his max.

To echo DN's sentiment, with the speed and talent we've got at RB now, I have a hard time seeing McDaniel breaking the 2-deep there.

I do, however, see him turning into a Toma-like slot receiver. I expect Kelly to officially make him a Z WR this spring.

I hear that. There is a good chance that happens.

Personally, I see him staying put and GAIII becoming a Z. Attkinson is explosive, but SO SKINNY for a RB. I think they'll want to get him the ball in space, but keep him from having to make the kind of cathes natural boundary recievers make or taking the hits a RB takes. Lots of screens and crossing routes.

On the other hand, with kids like Toma and McDaniel, I think that the attention to detail and work ethic is what makes them great. If you switch their positions, you cancel that out and give the advantage to the better athlete.

see him as a slot in the future...as said above, gonna be too hard for him to break the two deep

GA3 is cierre 2.0 imo...similar build coming in, but faster. i like him staying at RB and hope he stays there.

GAIII was recruited to play WR, but got moved to RB because he doesn't have the hands for it. I have little doubt that Longo will be able to increase his lower body strength significantly in the off-season.

I think he will be able to play CB just fine. A little saddened that it didn't work out for him at RB, at least to this point. I hope he kills it--he has great hands.

Interesting to me at least. I wonder if he played there at all in high school so he at least has some prior experience to work with.

imo...if he wanted to get on the field in a role outside of special teams this is the best move for him.

I am surprised by this move because he brings the versatility to the backfield that Coach Kelly seems to covet but this kid is a baller and I can see this possibly working out great. Even if it doesn't there is no need to panic because it is only spring and this could be just an experiment until the rest of the freshman class arrives with help. How Cam performs can determine whether or not Russell or Neal need to start on D.

He isnt even the 3rd string RB now. With Amir Carlisle getting cleared. You have at LEAST 3 solid RBs before Cam, it makes sense to try him out at CB because he isnt needed at RB for the 2012 season...

In und.com's video of BK's presser today, it cut away to show a highlight of Cam making an INT on an intermediate pass (I think he was defending a walk-on, but still, it showed good skills following the ball). It's a little after the 6-minute mark.

I think he was the guy Kelly talked about having the build and skills for (seeing him in the weight room during winter workouts.) I guess this was in the works before the recent events, based upon his abilities.

good start nonetheless considering he has been a CB for about 3 days.

I mentioned in another thread that Cam played safety in HS. Still, that's not corner, but he has looked at the field from that general perspective many times.

Good! at least he isn't completely new to Defense, I know how some of those big Texas schools don't want players playing both sides of the ball.

Granted it was one play out of who knows how many today for him. But he tracked the ball well on that play, but his hands were a little grabby. I think he'll fit right in with out any problems. Beyond normal growing pains.

FYI most of his offers were at safety. He liked that ND was going to give him a shot at RB. I wonder how he feels about this switch.

Is he a legit 5'11"? If so I could see him being effective. He has great agility... not excellent top end speed but good enough agility to play DB as effectively as, say, Julian Edelman.
