wasnt overly optimistic VT would land him. Still thinks VT is making progress but I get the feeling he was hoping EKanem would have called off the Irish visit and since he didnt do that, VT isnt sitting as pretty as they want to be

i think by this weekend, we'll have an idea of how interested we are in him. if we havent' received anything concrete on guys who are planning on signing on signing day, like darby, wright, standifer we'll make room with the notion that we're keeping room for armsteads and neal, should their interest still be there.

I think the staff feels extremely confident on Standifer. The most we can add besides him is probably 2.

Current 247 profile

Rating: 4:s: (93)
Height: 6'3''
Weight: 245
40: 4.69

Any team that runs a 3-4 would have a very hard time passing on those measurables. We need LBs.

the 3-4 is what Ekanem really wants to play in. VT runs a modified 4-3 base

isn't our "magic number" 23 for this class?

that would leave us capable of adding 4 more if standifer signs correct?

Assuming Carlisle's on scholarship this year and counting Badger as part of this incoming class, the magic number is 26.

It looks like we'll take four 5Ys, so that leaves 22 spots for incoming freshman. Counting Badger with our current commits, that means we have 4 spots left.

I use a spreadsheet depth chart to keep track. You're welcome to do the same.

Add columns C, D and E. That's the "magic number". Guess how many seniors in column F will get 5Ys, and add that to the number of current verbals (including Badger); subtract that figure from the magic number, and that's how many spots we have left.

is badger enrolled now, or is he waiting til the summer?

No, he'll enroll in August with the rest of the 2012 class for fall camp.

whiskey are you counting Goodman and most likely Slaughter, Cave, and KLM? If you include those guys, it seems we have only one schollie left... I dont know much about this either, so I could easily be overlooking something.

Nice layout--- much neater than my sloppily changing pen&ink.

I'm laying vbucks that we have a large quantity of posters on IE who will learn nothing from this. Still, soldier on, my friend; those who do are worth it --- the old teaching conundrum. Would give you reps but the robot says "spread 'em around".

My calculations assumed those four seniors as 5Ys. Columns C, D and E add up to 59.

85- 59= 26 (the "magic number").

26 - 4 5Ys = 22.

22 - 18 current verbals (including Badger) = 4 spots left.

While we're on this subject, I continue to be skeptical that Goodman is a lock to return. The only way we can hang in with top recruits who will be announcing after NSD (Neal, Darby, etc.) is if we have a contingent 5Y to step in if we miss out. I wouldn't be surprised if Goodman is that guy for us this year.

ESPN the awesome professionals that they are reported this:

ND's 2012 To-Do List

Check the 2nd paragraph, it mentions about Goodies 5th year (I doubt it's true because it's ESPN)

ok, ya ur right, thanks for clearing that up... 4 people left, so:
Standifer
Ekanem
Neal
Darby/Poole

^ If we end up with those guys, I would be very happy.

Fortuna cited 247, which got its info from Goodman's father, who probably got his info straight from John. I would guess there was a misunderstanding somewhere. Perhaps Kelly told John that there's a good chance he'll be back for a 5Y, and John announced it to his family and friends as a done deal.

I just don't see how he can be a lock when we're still in the hunt with guys like Agholor and Neal. You simply don't turn recruits like those away for one more year of John Goodman.

only way i can see john's 5th year being a "done deal" is if the staff has heard different things from neal and nelson, which hasn't seemed to be the case...simply just doesn't make any sense.

I have always wanted Ekanem BADLY, even after his injury. The kid is a tremendous player and a great pass rush specialist. He could even play some MLB if needed. He recorded 17 sacks his junior year and had a great senior year as well. When he received his offer from Notre Dame his classroom erupted with excitement and the teacher even let him call his mother during class to tell her. He belongs at ND, not at VT.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread: Beamer and Foster really want him in their aggressive speed-oriented Virginia Tech defense. That's all the rest of us need to know as to whether he'll fit and play at Notre Dame.

Keith Arnold thinks Ekanem projects as an ILB for us.

His measurables are similar to Rabasa's, who also ended up at ILB. He's very unlikely to see the field in 2012, and ILB will be a position of greater need than OLB in 2013.

Anything to this, or is Arnold just mistaken?

It's definitely a possibility and I think he could easily play there. He plays alot of spots for his high school team. I do think he's a better as a CAT OLB though. His ESPN bio seems to think he could play there based on his traits they give him.

If VT wants him [they do very much] then Foster thinks he can play speed&aggression LB in a 4-3 scheme. They would be VERY unlikely to be looking at him as a 4-3 middlebacker. This says to me that we'd be looking at him at Cat or Will. We need a solid Will linebacker more than a Cat.
