As we are approaching the time for Kelly to make his decisions on 5th year candidates, I am hoping that we find room for Sean Cwynar. I know that guys like Slaughter and Cave are locks, but Cwynar is a really solid DL. I went back and watched alot of the Champs Bowl again today. After a few days, it is much easier to make non-emotional evaluations.

On defense, Cwynar really stood out. He is a very active DL, who pursues the ball very well. He is also flexible at playing either end or NT. Given that he finally is healthy enough to lift this off-season, I would expect him to be SOLID next year. By having him on board, you can let a freshman like Sheldon Day red-shirt.

Even with the fact we have Lynch, Tuitt and Nix, it is really really important to have DL depth in todays college football. Think about the fact we lost both Ethan and KLM for significant portions of this season. Further, Tuitt was out ill a game or two and Lynch was limping thru several games.

Hope we find room for this kid. He is a gamer.

Probably not going to happen. Cwynar was in the recruiting class of 2008, so he should be a senior this year. However, the team roster at und.com lists him as a junior. If he hasn't graduated, he doesn't stand much of a chance of getting a 5th year. But maybe the roster at und.com is wrong?

He already graduated, maybe even in 3 years or something. He is incredibly smart.

Definite: Cave, Slaughter, KLM

Maybe: Cwynar, Goodman, Golic (probably in that order)

Cwynar does have eligibility for a 5th year for those questioning. He actually already has his MBA. The guy is really smart. I hope he gets invited back as for Goodman getting an invite before Cwynar, WHAT?? We have Davarius and Daniel Smith who can take his place. Further, we have several stud WR's coming on board. It is likely they will get serious PT.

As we are approaching the time for Kelly to make his decisions on 5th year candidates, ...

Keep in mind this is Notre Dame not Alabama or USC. The coach gets to select who HE wants to see back and who HE would offer a scholarship to it takes the approval of a UND Faculty Board to get a 5th year. The Faculty board determines who meets the university's requirements and who is academically eligible for a graduate program.

Terry has a pretty good list there but without knowing the academic side we're postulating simply on the football skills/needs.

If he already has an MBA the Faculty Board would be academic. (Sorry I liked that one.) There are more younger bodies probably in the receiving corps that one would assume could step up but are they ready? Or will a steady but not exciting Goodman provide more stablity with a young QB, Rees, Hendrix, or Golson? You're only breaking in one end of the pitch and catch routine then not both.

It's all down to real numbers for places folks. If Cave, Slaughter and KLM are granted 5ths, then we are within six spots of close-out, I believe. Some of you want Fuller, the two Jersey DBs, Westerkamp or some other WR, Ekanem &/or Odenigbo, Garnett, several other DBs that people regularly salivate about without paying attention to the number 85.

If we got verbals from say Fuller, Westerkamp, Shumate, Wright, Garnett, Ekanem, or add in your own biases for Agholor, Neal, Odenigbo, etc etc to get to six added to those already verbaled, then even Cwynar would have to be let go. That's not the best strategy for this next year, but it might be weighed as the best strategy for two-to-four years from now.

We need Goodman back to fair catch punts. He will be a sure-fire, no-brainer, 1st team all-American at that position (if it were a position).

Who do we have to fair catch behind him? Brindza? Daly? Heggie? All are unproven fair-catchers.

Goodman's a lock for a 5th year.

Wouldn't be shocked if Goodman is asked back. A lot of unproven guys at WR, even if we are theoretically high on talent.

Also, I recall Kelly making comments on Schmidt potentially playing his way into a scholarship...

Cwynar would be a good call to come back. He knows the system, plays hard, and from what i hear is a good team mate. Need to have good depth at D line.

I may be in the minority however,I think Goodie gets a 5th mainly because we need many WRs to run BK offence. He has been in the system and is big and fast. My issue with him is he is not very aggressive. Case in point was the pass that was picked off towards the end of the game...I thought he had a play on it -- instead he gave a quick look at the FS and pulled up.

Looks like this, right now.

Personally I'd like to keep Cwynar. We have Louis Nix and then no one else behind him. Tyler Stockton has been a huge bust and Tony Springmann is unproven. ND could definitely use some quality experience along the defensive front, especially with such a young and vulnerable secondary.

But if it comes down to a big-time recruit or Cwynar for a final scholarship, I'd want it to go to the recruit.

This. NTs on scholarship that have eligibility remaining are: Cwynar, Newman, Stockton, Nix, and Springman.

Newman isn't getting a 5Y. Stockton signed as a highly touted 4:s: but has been a complete bust ever since, and Springman is a total unknown. If the staff lets Cwynar go, I'd guess that means they expect Stockton or Springman to be a serious contributor next year, or that they expect Tuitt to see a lot of time at NT.

Also, Cwynar graduated with a business degree last year, and has been working on his MBA this year; thus, the Faculty Board is academic (well played, BGIF). If he gets a 5Y, he'll leave ND with MBA in hand, for which the 30y ROI is $6 million +.

Cwynar's one recruit who played this game correctly. He's unlikely to earn a single dollar from the NFL, but he'll end up making more in this lifetime than the average draftee.

He seriously graduated, AND got his MBA, in three years? If this is accurate, he just became the player I will most root for.

In one of those crazy Golic,jr and Newman film routines, Cwynar was acknowledged as the lead dog of the D-Linemen.

He graduated in 3 years and is in the 1 year MBA program this year. If he gets a fifth year he would have to get another degree. I saw an interview in which he mentioned law school but he didn't want to spend 3 more years in school and doesn't know what degree he would go want.

Here is an article talking about it.

Give him another year. He is solid, and will provide a nice veteran presence along with KLM.

So, if he's in the MBA program, this year: that means that he got his undergrad, last year? In only his second year? Color me still incredibly impressed!

He red-shirted his freshman year. So he technically graduated undergrad after his junior year, having only used two of his four years of eligibility.

If he graduated High School in '08, then his first year at ND should have been '09? Meaning, if he is in Grad school in '11, then he should have gotten his undergrad in '10?

2008, 2009, and 2010 to finish his undergrad. 2011 to finish his MBA (assuming he's finished; I thought he was still working on it).

I've been working too hard. Got so much stuff in my head that I can no longer do simple math. Ugh!!

I'm still impressed with the kid, and still will be rooting for him, wherever he ends up.
