I saw a tweet...not sure who it was...but had a picture of Daly repping the ND "gang sign" that Baratti did right before his game last week.

Even though 2*'s completely undermines the importance of a guy who doesn't make errant snaps on field goals and punts. Those snaps can make or break a game.

I don't know about everybody else but I zero problem with Kelly giving out a scholarship to solidify our long snapping for the next several years.
I agree with you.

Scott is the only player on the front page who doesn't have a star next to him. I thought it would be nice to put stars next to his name.

Gang sign? No. Hand signal? Sure.

Hand signal is more like waving your hand to tell someone to come here or waving goodbye.

Gang sign is showing who you are representing....it may not be politically correct but given the meaning it fits better....he's part of The Beast D Gang.

The forgotten recruit.

The forgotten recruit.

There's cobwebs growing in this forum.

OMM has been worried about OL bodies but Daly is Kelly's secret weapon. He'll be 250 -255 by the Fall and 275 - 280 as a Soph. He may not become a starting OL but he will be more than just a LS. He'll provide depth to the OLine as an upperclassman.

... The Illinois native has not turned his focus towards enrolling and Notre Dame in preparing for the rigors of college football.

"I can't wait to get up there, the great thing is I've already built some great relationships with my future teammates," he stated. "It's a special place and I can't wait to be a part of it. I’m going to work everyday to get better at my snapping and hopefully I can come in next season and help the team.”

...

I dont' follow what Adams is saying here. He was discussing Daly's avid participation in recruiting other prospects but then shifted to "not turned his focus towards enrolling". Is Adams saying here that Daly will be an EE next month? I wouldn't expect him to have a focus on enrolling now if he was due in until next August.

decker said in his last interview that he was not going to play basketball this year so he can focus on getting ready for ND...kid had D1 basketball potential so there might be your answer. would be great to get him in early and get an extra spring in the weightroom.

I thought the same thing but figured he meant to say now instead of not. Just a one letter difference that he didn't catch.

I find it nice that Daly will be a more rugged individual than Cowart, but how much he'd ever help with actual lineplay... hmmmm... I doubt. He might well grow heavy enough, but whether Kelly would ever want to take practice snaps away from, say, Hegarty, Harrell, Hanratty or whoever are our centers, to rep-up a "project", I don't know. If this got to be a "Heggie situation", where the athlete really looked like he could compete in the actual fire, then yes. But then, unlike Hegarty, Harrell, Hanratty, and Heggie, Daly's name doesn't begin with "H".

Daly Selected Long Snapper Of The Year

Daly Selected Long Snapper Of The Year

Scout.com: Irish Pledge Scott Daly Earns National Honor

By Dave Berk
Irish Eyes
Dec 18, 2011

Saturday night proved to be an extra special one for Notre Dame pledge Scott Daly and his family. This weekend found Notre Dame pledge Scott Daly and his family in California for the Herbalife National Players of the Year banquet and presentation.
Though many question offering kickers or long snapper's scholarships, Daly showed early signs of being the best in the country at his position.
On Saturday night, Daly walked away with the Chris Rubio Long Snapper of the Year award.
The award is voted upon by a panel of voters including Rubio, past and current NFL Long Snappers, and past and current NCAA Long Snappers.

We lose our LS after this year don't we?

Who said it was a bad idea to get a LS on scholarship?

Do you mean after 2011 season? Then you are wrong.

If you mean after the 2012 season, then you are correct.

Also, his name is Jordan Cowart.

Ah, I thought he was done once he broke his hand. lol

Note: I was also afraid to use his name because I didn't think people would recognize it if I just said "Don't we lose Cowart?" I guess I was wrong.

Who said it was a bad idea to get a LS on scholarship?

Some argue that scholarships are "wasted" on specialists. They generally advocate using those 3-4 scholarships on more important positions and utilizing walk-ons for long-snapping, kicking, and punting.

Jordan Cowart started every game as a freshman in '09 so '12 will be his final season.

Who said it was a bad idea to get a LS on scholarship?

Lots of people. Holtz didn't believe a kicker should get a scholarship. He was the first ND caoch to experience the 85 man roster limit and felt injuries, grades, etc took too much of a toll with only 85 bodies in a smash mouth environment. He used walk-on kickers and the center or another OL handled the long snaps. In the early 90's Holtz tried talking an Argentinian scoccer player into coming to ND as a walkon. The recruit balked wanting a scholarship and went elsewhere and became an All-American and All-Pro Place Kicker. Holtz teams struggled and he reluctantly started offering scholarships to recruit kickers (and not with great results).

Through the parade of coaches ND has had since Holtz, ND has had an imbalance of Special Teams Specialists. I believe having as many as 5 scholarship specialists on the team. That means you only have a max 80 bodies that mix it up.

If a specialist helps me win games, he's just as much as part of the team as every other kid on scholarship. That's my philosophy.

It always comes down to 00:01 and who controls the destiny. I want the best kicker in the country kicking game winners.

The ideal special teams specialist mix is 1 long-snapper who does it "professionally" [this is a relatively new requirement since Frank Beamer ruined it for everybody with his elaborate speed rush punt blocking games, which have finally taken over most of the country]; 1 punter who does this "professionally", since this is a kicking action [especially given the need to hurry it and take few steps] which is not well translated from soccer; and if you're lucky, 1 walk-on field goal kicker/ kick-off thunderfoot [probably a soccer player].

You might then just get away with 2 scholarship players. The likelihood is that the best you can do is three. Schools that pull this off have a dedicated lineman to fill in at LS [ND has a walk-on who is willing to do this even with Cave], and some former high school athlete/kicker, now a QB or something, who would fill in punting in distress.

ND as we know has 5 persons this year, and will have 5 next year. Kelly will smooth this out, but the Tausch/Brindza situation makes this a slow process. If Brindza turns out to be able to both Kick and Punt, carrying too many for two years will have been worth it.

Wasn't that one of the Gramatica brothers?

And also, on ^, we need to give Brindza back his shoes that he played with early in the year. Kickers are headcases, so they really should be allowed to wear whatever they want, be it bright neon green shoes or no shoes at all.

Yes, it was. Here's a link to an IrishEnvy post on him from some newbie back in '05.

Kickers are "special" people. I don't know if his neon shoes were changed strictly for sartorail reasons or if there was a penalty concern about a uniform violation. If I recall correctly during the Davie era, ND was flagged by a Mac ref crew for a uniform violation for a couple of players have different length socks. They could be short or long but they all had to be the same length.

Actually, he didn't kick well in those shoes. His kicking improved [a little, temporarily] when he dumped them, or was told to dump them. I remember thinking at the time " if I were special teams coach, I'd tell Brindza that he was going to have to earn those 'going my own way' shoes before I let him put them back on."

Importance of the snap was highlighted in the Stanford game.

Looking forward to seeing this kid play for the Irish.

Besides his unbridled enthusiasm for the school, one nice thing about Scott is that he looks like a D1 ST player. He could snap and then make a tackle. Remember the kid we almost offered last year who weighed 165 soaking wet!
