So LSU/Vandy were balls to the wall for him from the get go, and stayed on him during his committment to IU?

The hell if I know. What LSU/Vandy's staffs did is completely independent of what ND's staff did or is doing. What I'm saying is if ND's had done those things we would have locked him up.

How is this confusing? I'll give you an analogy. You're at a restaurant, and the 4 course meal on the menu looks really good so you order it. You also opt to not order the chocolate souffle (that takes 40 minutes to make and you have to order at the start of the meal) because you assume you're going to be full. Then it turns out 1 of the 4 courses wasn't good and now you have room for desert. You say to yourself "darn, I really want the souffle now, but it's going to be hard to get now because I didn't order it ahead of time."

IF you had opted to order the souffle you'd be happy and enjoying a delicious desert. But AT THE TIME it made perfect logical sense why you didn't go all in for the desert.
--------------
Translating this to Kiel, I'm saying that while it makes sense that we didn't go balls to the wall for him and stay on him the entire time he was committed to Indiana, the only reason we're in a dog fight right now and might lose him is because we didn't take those steps. Clear?

Damn that was a good post. Made me hungry as well. REPS.

Lax, much love homie, but I can't ride with you on this one.

The staff did stay in touch with Gunner when he was committed to IU, they visited him plenty before his commitment, and Gunner has been on campus (with family) at least twice since his decommitment. He has been to Notre Dame's campus more than anywhere. He grew up with Notre Dame football and his entire family is familiar with Coach Kelly and what ND has to offer. Kelly recruited both Drew and Dusty Kiel. This is not his first rodeo recruiting in the Kiel household.

Gunner has also laid out how he wants the process to proceed and the coaches have had more face to face contact with him than either of Vandy or LSU.

He has been a quite recruit, has been since the start. So we have been dealing with him in the manner that he appreciates. We have the best options for everything he expressed that he wants in a program. I have been trying to stay away from this thread because of all the bad info and freeking out that goes on in here. So chill out dudes. His recruitment is really not as complicated as any of you are making it out to be.

This thread is a classic example of how a topic with little information, but of great importance, will soon get the information made for it. Quit making his recruitment something it's not.

Have to agree wholeheartedly with the bolded statement. Not necessarily referring to LAX or his post specifically, but Gunners recruitment is probably one of the quietest under the radar recruitments of a top QB in the country you will ever see. Throughout the entire process, he has never dropped hints where he was leaning. No information has been leaked...there has been nothing but speculation and rumors, but somehow message boards over time mold that speculation into what they want it to be. Nobody but Gunner, his family, and the coaches directly involved know anything about what has gone on, and what it going on right now. Hell even the best in the business at reporting this stuff have all but they have no idea what going, have no read on Gunner and cant do any more than speculate.

Yesterday on the radio station here in Nashville, (The Zone 104.5), they were asking a guy from Scouts where they thought Kiel would go and his comment was to the T, "I'm sure Notre Dame has the upper hand right now over all the schools". Take it for what it is worth brothers.

I don't think that anybody should or does hold it against a young man for taking his time, weighing his options and making a sound decision.

However, for God's sake, he's going to enroll early at the school he chooses. He could be a tremendous help in the recruiting cycle to the school he chooses. So for the ultimate destination and the talent he'll have to work with on the field, I think it would behoove him to make a decision already.

I'd say he likes the attention but you hear nothing about him in the social media world, he doesn't tweet like a fool, he's not posting stuff on facebook and he's not whoring himself to the media. Clearly it's not that he loves the attention so he must just be torn, which is why all of the guessing about who is in the lead is kind of ridiculous. I'm thinking that he's just going to wake up one of these mornings and say "It's ND" or "It's Vanderbilt" or "It's LSU". A gut feeling is going to stir or he's just going to have a "I woke up this morning and I know this is right for me" kind of moment. He'll probably hop down to the breakfast table, announce the decision to his parents casually, call a coach and then head to school. That simple.

Jesus, have I really spent this much of the last month worrying about an 18 year-old kid....wow.

I think that scenario bodes well for ND.

I hope you're right.

Now to address the meat of your post specifically, to the part I've bolded we DO have a pretty good idea. And that is that ND's staff did not push for him until he contacted them and his recruitment basically fell in their lap.

To the second part I bolded, how many times have ND's coaches driven down to see him? Answer me that first before you tell me we didn't get out-recruited or put in max effort.

A lot of the confusion on my part was more directed from the post where you said if we don't get him, it will be because of the coaches...and then in another post where you said you don't blame the staff.

I understand quite well why the staff wasn't all over his jock previously-- there probably wasn't quite the need for him then as there appears to be now.

My comments regarding the unknowns of how his recruiting is currently going stems more from the general lack of actual knowledge of the situation...because none of us are actually involved in it. That's probably the biggest reason I can't answer how many times ND coaches have driven down to see him. In a similar way, it's why none of us (unless we're Gunner or somebody on the staff here...in which case an NCAA violation would be occurring) can say with a lot of certainty what is going on with him. Knowledgeable posters on web sites and paid subscriptions for premium info on web sites doesn't quite cut the mustard for my standard of solid information. We all speculated Perkins backed out because of grades, but confirmation from many on here came from a poster on here who goes to school with him. Sounds like credible stuff, but sometimes high school rumors are just that. Can anybody on here say with absolute certainty whether Noah Spence is being recruited as a DE or OLB? Many have guessed, assumed, and surmised...but I don't think anybody here truly knows what BK and staff have told him. And we won't know for a little while for sure because the coaches are prohibited from commenting about recruits and Spence himself hasn't said.

The comment I threw in there about Vandy was kind of aimed at me (and I'm sure many others) believing if ND loses him to them, then there's more to the story. To keep the analogies going, I think it'd be like Tom Brady deciding if he's going to marry super hot, super wealthy, well-traveled, sexy-accented Gisele...or the kinda cute girl named Ruby Sue that lived down the street when he was a kid. I'm sure Ruby Sue down is pretty in her own way and has a lot of attributes, but let's face it, she is definitely different than Gisele. We all know Tom picked Gisele and nobody thinks he made a bad decision to do so. But if he picked Ruby Sue over Gisele, people would question him. I, for one, don't think he necessarily made a bad decision. After all, it's his decision to make, and he needs to make the one that will make him happiest. Only Tom can answer if it's Gisele or Ruby Sue, and if he were to pick Ruby Sue, I think it would stem from a fundamental difference in what he wants out of marriage, family, and life in general. Him picking Ruby Sue over Gisele would say more about Tom than either Gisele or Ruby Sue.

This thread needs to be shut down until this kid commits. If he comes great, if he doesn't that's Kiel's decision. ND will be fine with or without Gunner Kiel.

All good points but I just want to address the part I bolded. The grades thing with Perkins was first reported by a Rivals mod (I think Mike Farrel) and it was reported as a fact. The OLB thing with Spence was also reported by premium mods, then backed up by quotes from Noah saying he wasn't sure if he liked the idea of playing OLB which he was being recruited for. Since then, it's evolved and we very well may be recruiting him as a DE, but in general most of this whole thing comes down to do you trust premium site reporters/mods? If you don't, then there is basically nothing on this site worth reading. But I do, and I get most of my information from ISD and 247. And a couple other sources.

I understand not trusting "informed" posters though because it's the internet and anyone can say something. That's why on most speculation/twitter buzz I post it as such and if it's info from a premium site I always try to attribute it to "Per ISD..." or "Per a poster on..." so people know what weight to give it. I think it was really good point raised above that Gunner's recruitment is so odd because it is 90% speculation, with only information coming from "sources close to Gunner," no quotes from the man himself, and an abundance of visits to schools he seems to take on a whim. So really we're all just going round and round and round with no new information, throwing **** against a wall, and seeing what sticks. I really hope he wraps everything up this week so that we can put this to bed.

Yeah, you're right. I wouldn't keep "reading up" about ND if everything out there were just wild rumors. Most of it's just taken with a grain of salt. One reason I love IE and feel I've found a home here (now I'm throwing analogies out the window here and going with sappy, campy, emotional appeals :) ) is because the discussions are usually calm, logical, and filled with good information (and sometimes banter) flowing back and forth. Also, guys like you, Terry Tate, GITF, GB Domer, and others put out some breaking/insider info that is backed by legitimate reasoning and sources...which I, and others, really do appreciate.

Here's to hoping Gunner is Irish :alcohol:

Tell you what Urbie - if you don't like it, then don't read it. Go to your OSU board or something. BUt let us handle Irish info the way we see fit here at IE. Thanks...

I am hearing that Urban may be taking a break from posting on the board to focus on his health and to spend time with his family.

Just smoke right now, but i'll keep you posted.

But Urbie just told me he'd rather die and coach me than retire for his health/family! :footballh

Just bringing a little perspective to the board chief, ND football will go on with or without this kid. That's all I'm saying.

To expand on that, ND football will go on with or without every single recruit on this board, and yet you continue to click on their threads and make comments on their threads. So why talk about ANY recruits right? And for that matter, why talk about any subject on this board??? Football will go on whether or not we talk position changes, coaches, position battles, the 2 deep, etc. So why talk about it, right?

Like I said, we're fine here Urbie. Let us discuss ND football the way we want. There was zero perspective gained from your post, b/c we already knew that. But don't tell us how to talk about our football program, that's all. Go tell your OSU boards how to be run. Thanks...
