I still didn't comprehend how his daughter is staying in Florida with his wife...? I was only half listening. Could someone break it down for me how they are handling that? I felt so happy for him and his family when he was talking about how much better his daughter was doing at her new school and how she seemed so much more happy.

I don't know anything other that the presser. I assume they're trying to disrupt her life (routine, surrounding, familiar faces, etc.) as little as possible. I don't know if the family moved to KC when he took the KC job or if they stayed in South Bend.

They all made the move to FL. They live in the Reddick area, horse country, 30 minutes or so south of Gainsville. Maura, his wife likes horses. I assume they have a big place with support staff. Charlie mentioned something about Hannah "liking school". I too was half listening at that point. I would expect from a mom's viewpoint that Northern Florida winters are lot easier to deal with than K.C. winters (or summers). And as for living apart, the Wieses are accoustomed to it. She's be a "football widow" most if not all of her married life. And keep in mind they're not 20 somethings.

I don't know how he'll work out visiting the family with the hours he spent "in the office" in New England and in South Bend but I expect that's something he and the KU AD have discussed and are both comfortable with. I can see lots of recruiting trips based out of Northern FL.

He probably made good money in the NFL, did very well at ND. Made 800K at UF so the Weis family doesn't live on the budget constraints that most of us here do. In season, Charlie will be in Lawrence. Out of season, I'd expect him to spend a lot of long weekends home. I can't speak to the KU Alumni Association but I'd guess they're not as spread out as ND Clubs are, NOR as demanding. I've got to believe this was all covered in negotiations. Considering the number of coaches that get in trouble each year for extracurricular activities I can see a school being flexible with a verified "family" man (and who's the highest profile and wealthiest football coach they've ever had).

Hiring a good staff at Kansas is crucial for Weis. Players just weren't developed while he was at ND. Hopefully for his sake he learns from his many mistakes the second time around. As a coach you can't recruit one D-lineman like he did in 09. Doing things like that really hurt your program.

He recruited a lot more than one. He SIGNED one. Between personal favorites like Mooney's Simon to OSU, ND academics plus Oliver and Tenuta/Brown fiasco a lot of prospects chose elsewhere. The defections he lost over the years in January were a much bigger problem than '09.

I disagree, with the resources at ND no excuse for that to happen. Bottom line he signed ONE D-LINEMAN, that can't happen no matter what. Plus the one kid that was signed doesn't play. It kills your depth going forward. I have serious doubts about Kelly but I gave him credit for D-line recruiting. He's doing better in that area than Weis ever did.

Maybe Ianello will be next. Haywood might be looking for a second chance... He may be able to put together a good coaching staff.

But he better get a great defensive coordinator!

I wish he went to Kansas before he came here. They get all the good Weis coaching without all the mistakes he learned from here. I never hated Charlie being a Pat's And Irish fan I just hoped for more.

Former All-American Tim Grunhard is his OL coach. Was a great player here.

Interesting, Grunhard was considering joining the ND staff a few years ago but the salary AND the move were a deal breaker. If I remember correctly he's located over by KC, MO so he's probably able to commute rather than buy and sell houses and move kids.

Yeah, I think he was going to be a GA or something of the like (Bryant Young instead). And I think he was pretty gung ho and all for it, but didn't really want to move, and his wife REALLY didn't want uproot from the KC area.

Am I remembering this somewhat correctly?

Yep. Grunhard has been the coach of Bishop Miege for the past few years. It's a Catholic sports power. He's also on the radio a lot around here.

Will be a good fit as a person. Here's hoping he's a great O-Line coach.

Quote of the day...Grunhard on 810 sports talking about recruiting:

"I don't care if you look like Tarzan if you play like Jane."

I agree with that 100%. Notre Dame should never hire an HC with no HC experience. It's too much of a gamble.

CW's two biggest hires are the O-line coach and DC (in that order btw).

I remember Grunhard. Came from a time and place where you gotta believe he knows what it takes to win. No College coaching experience...thats a bit of a wildcard at THE most important position coaching spot on the field...but, it would seem he'll get his pick of the litter from O-line recruits in KC and surrounding areas...gotta believe he can make it happen, just no proof at this level.

Lets see what he comes up with on D...

Strength and Conditioning is up there too.

I think chucks problem last time around is that he didn't enforce expectations, or even make progress in S&C an expectation...

So if the solution is him deciding to make it something he expresses as an expectation...and he measures, well, I think anyone competent will do a nice job. As such he may need one but the criticality of who just isn't there IMHO.

Chuck doin work.

Saw on twitter, via Hansen he came up to SB to talk to Dayne and then head over to SB Washington to meet with Dieter. Sounds like there was quite the reunion with Weis and his former players currently on ND's roster.

Weis is also recruiting Jake Heaps (again), who is looking to possibly transfer to KU.

Weis also has already informed current Jayhawk QB, Jordan Webb, that he did not fit into his offensive system and advised him to transfer. If the cards fall correctly, that would make Crist the starter next year and Heaps the starter thereafter (once he sat out 2012 due to transfer rules). Tidbit: Webb was recruited to KU by current ND coach, Wariner - lots of KU/ND connections.

I wonder if Pitt was open before Kansas if Weis and Pitt would have had mutual interest. He's an east coast kind of guy and Pitt is a better job than Kansas.

I'd like to see Weis recruit DGB. Florida was already recruiting him and if Weis was his recruiter, there could already be a relationship. Reports suggest DGB wants to stay close to home. Eventhough Ark and Mizzou are pretty close at 145 and 223 miles respectively, Kansas is only 195 miles away from Springfield. He has NFL connections. He coached Michael Floyd for two years. He'll be possibly bringing in a 5star QB in Crist and another 4star QB in Heaps. His offense, when clicking, puts up the points, mainly with WRs.

I have no affiliation to Kansas, nor am I a fan. I do think it'd make a pretty good story though and I think it'd be entertaining to hear about Kansas, of all football programs, making a splash with CW.

Charlie w/ his reputation already is talking/meeting w/ kids that would have never given the Hawks the time of day. I heard he met w/ Gehrig and D-Perkins when he was in South Bend. A Crist/Heaps combo would be huge, I wish Jordan Webb well, but he would not be able to excel in Charlie's offense.

Webb is a good kid...a tough kid. He took a lot of hits over the past two years. But, he doesn't fit Weis at all. He could do very well at a low to mid-level place that runs an efficient spread.

I'm glad it wasn't. I wouldn't want to play against Weis every year.
