Our best players should never be the same number, just in case they turn out to be incredible and pull a Charles Woodson or Bobby Boucher type by playing mainly on D but have very special packages, or return punts a la Mathieu.

Love the confidence coming from this group of recruits...A couple of more pieces and we'll definitely witness something special in the coming years!

I noticed scout and rivals has him listed as a "soft verbal". Never noticed that before. It is because he was taking visits?

That page on scout has listed him as a "soft verbal" in red for weeks. Chalk it up to a deprecated page and not an indication of anything.

They do that for all recruits who are taking visits. In my mind he is a soft verbal as well as long as he is taking visits or even talking about taking visits. Solid verbals don't take visits.

As for Deonte, that's an encouraging quote. The USC recruitnik at Rivals still says that Deonte really likes USC but doesn't think USC has enough space to take Deonte. He also thinks his recruitment will be a wild one and basically said he's like a recruiting diva. Whatever. But I'm loving that last quote right there by Greenberry...

It didn’t take long at last May’s Stanford Nike Camp to see that Deontay Greenberry from Washington Union (Easton, Calif.) was one of the elite athletes in attendance.

Greenberry was coming in after a strong junior season, but showed what he could do as a wide receiver despite going up against other future Division I college defensive backs.

All of it apparently set up the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder to have a monstrous senior season. It’s a season that still has one more game to go, too, after Washington Union (13-0) was chosen to play 14-0 Campolindo (Moraga, Calif.) in this Saturday’s CIF Division III state bowl game at The Home Depot Center in Carson.

In last weekend’s 55-12 win by the Panthers over Wasco (Wasco, Calif.) in the CIF Central Section Division IV championship, Greenberry caught 13 passes for 209 yards and four touchdowns. His quarterback, senior Chris Cain, passed for two additional scores and ended 23-of-30 for 370 yards.

It’s where Greenberry has now risen on two all-time state lists that shows just what he’s done for the Panthers this season.

For touchdown catches, Greenberry upped his season total to 32 and has broken one of the oldest football records in the Cal-Hi Sports state book. He moved past the previous record of 29 first set in 1970 by John McKay Jr. from Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.) and then tied in 1999 by Earvin Johnson from Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.). Note: John McKay Jr.’s quarterback in 1970 was Pat Haden, currently the athletic director at USC.

For most receiving yards in a season, Greenberry not only went past the 2,000-yard mark but he surpassed the previous state record of 2,063 set in 2009 by Bryce McGovern from Monte Vista of Danville. Note: Bryce’s QB was Brett Nottingham, who could be starting at Stanford next season with the departure of Andrew Luck to the NFL.

Greenberry committed to Notre Dame before the season began along with his cousin, defensive back Tee Shepard, who transferred to Washington Union before the start of the season but was not granted eligibility.

Here are updates of the two primary state record categories in which Greenberry now sits on the top:

Most Receiving Yards (Season)

2,108 - Deontay Greenberry, Easton Washington Union, 2011 (13)*

2,063 - Bryce McGovern, Danville Monte Vista, 2009 (12)

2,001 - Alex Villalobos, San Gabriel, 2011 (14)

1,899 - Logan Smith, Folsom Vista del Lago, 2011 (12)

1,846 - Steve Martinez, Los Angeles Wilson, 1977 (13)

1,810 - Barry Wilson, Tulare, 2005 (13)

1,780 - Hayo Carpenter, Ridgecrest Burroughs, 2005 (14)

1,779 - Geoff McArthur, Pacific Palisades, 1999 (13)

1,772 - Phil Galligan, Moraga Campolindo, 2004 (12)

1,749 - Kelly Starnes, Concord, 2010 (13)

1,690 - Tony Hartley, Los Alamitos, 1995 (13)

1,680 - Jake Maulhardt, Camarillo, 2011 (11)

I'm not disagreeing with your line of thinking, NDinLA (solid verbals don't take visits), but as far as Deontay I am having a hard time rectifying the idea that his recruitment has a lot of twists and turns before NSD with everything that has come directly from him, because that seems to indicate that he is all ND. Add to that what I read to be a solid commitment from Tee and I just feel like Deontay is more solid than the typical "soft" commit. By NSD, Tee should be a ND student. If that does turn out to be the case I feel pretty good about holding onto Deontay.

Most vital player in this class. Our WR depth is weak right now. Couple in Davonte and Agholor and it's back to elite.

Agreed. Darby and Tee as a combo rank up there, too. But I love our receivers so far with the diverse skills that Deontay, Ferg and Chris Brown will bring. Add another guy or two (Nelson, Neal, Westercamp or Payton) and that is a sick haul. But Deontay is the linchpin of that group. Without him it's a good group, but not as special.

Kid will start from day 1.

Swag and Balls.

GB - what is your take on the "solidness" of Deontay's commitment? Do you agree with NDinLA that he's somewhat soft, or do you get the sense that his recruitment is basically over?

He's the best WR in CA! And he practically had to beg us for an offer. Thank God he's Tee's cousin, or we probably would have missed the boat.

Manti comin back, Tee Shepard and Ronald Nitro Darby comin in behind him in the secondary and ya boy goin for 100+ every game....National Championship team no doubt

#gettn' ready 4 state

Hes solid. Didnt visit USC well he did for the UCLA game. HE will start from day 1 here. Once Tee shows up in a couple weeks i doubt Deontay will be a trojan. If Tee comes so does Deontay.

That was my read, too. I'm a member of that facebook group he posted that in (although I don't post in it), and when I saw Deontay's post I felt like it was basically over. I just didn't know if there was anything in the grapevine that would have led you to believe differently.

I agree with you that he will get off the plane in South Bend as a starting receiver, too.

I'd say we need him to.

TJ Jones - He wasn't consistently thrown to at any point but never really showed the ability to get deep separation or take a short pass long.

Robby Toma - Very solid slot receiver I hope to see on the field a lot next year.

Daniel Smith - Unknown
DDaniels - Unknown (Really the only unknown with talked about game changing potential)
Matthias Farley - Unknown
Luke Massa - Unknown
