I know I am a little premature in starting this thread now, but I was hoping some information could be shared. Anyone have any "inside" information on how the other QB's are doing? Like strengths/weakness' in learning/performing the offense?

Also, I don't want this to become a Rees vs the world thread. I think we all know his strengths, and shortcomings. I am more interested in whats being said about the other players development.

All information is much appreciated.

Kelly is very high on Golson's athleticsism but he has no game experience, right now hes probably at 3 on next years race behind tommy 1 and andrew 2

If he doesnt have game experience why isn't he in more in the blowouts? God forbid that DOOM happens and we lose 2 QBs, he'll have to play. When you are miles ahead that is when you get your kids some experience.

Rees is the de facto starter until something definitive happens to convince me otherwise.

3 qb's

Rees, Crist, Hendrix

1,2,3

He needs to keep his redshirt.

I know we can't be sure of this for sure, but some good friends of mine on campus who are close with Hendrix have given me the impression that Kelly has not taught Hendrix the full playbook and he only knows the set of plays that are specific to his package. If that's the case, I wonder if it's even going to be a fair competition in Spring. This is just what I have heard, though.

Interesting. Maybe Kelly wants him to be really great in his package come game time.

Regarding Golson, Kelly has said that he is really really good on the scout team. There should be really decent competition in spring.

I think Kelly throws the book at both Golsen and Hendrix during spring. If they preform very well under that situation we will see 1 of 2 things happen. Either someone will step up and take over #1 spot. Or 2. one of them earns 30% of the game time snaps then later, with the 60/40 share during practice, takes over the number 1 around the bye week/ Miami game.

I may be a reaching a bit with the latter but I think we see a major progression from whoever become the number 2. Eventually making it hard for BK to sit him.

I'll also add that Golson had a bad case of the fumbles in fall camp.

And both Golson and Hendrix are light years behind Rees in terms of recognizing defenses and getting into the correct protections and things like that.

I hope they catch up and make it a real competition this spring...

Not surprised to see this Thread but Tommy is Kelly's guy. And unless Hendrix or Golson make up alot of room TR will be the QB for probably the nest 2 years. I Think Tommy is a average QB. But nothing anything of us can say or do about it but support the team as a whole unit.

I haven't missed watching a game in 8 years.. if Tommy starts against Navy next year in the opener, I might miss several games, probably totaling 13

I really doubt that Brian Kelly is intentionally holding ANY of his QBs back.

And that's when those around you start asking around... "Who the hell is that? Who the hell is sharksamardzija598018?" We like to call it the "Suck Zone" and you're circling the drain.

You won't be missed, Son. Enjoy anonymity.

I will never understand this line of thinking. SMH.

just my personal way of protesting the coaching decisions of my favorite team (if it happens to come to that).. if we see a QB with some potential playing, I'll be supportive of the coaching decisions

fair enough.. not overly concerned with how a few random people characterize my fandom of my team.. as far as I'm concerned, I control how much of a fan I am..

I just don't feel like going through another year of poor QB play when we'll have Hendrix (with two years under his belt) and Golson (with one year under his belt) sitting behind the most blatantly obvious mediocre QB on the team.. just don't feel like watching a guy stand there and not gain 15 yards on a scramble because he's slower than our offensive linemen

My point is that Hendrix or Golson are allowed/expected to make a big jump this offseason and pass Rees for the starting job but you seem to have decided that Rees can't improve and that he has no potential. That I don't understand. There should be a QB competition in the spring and the best QB should win it (whoever that may be) and what would you protest if Rees turned out to be the best option? That Kelly should start someone you feel has more potential? Sigh.

You make me hate our fans.

It would be one thing if we were losing games and Kelly appeared content with the team's play. I can at least wrap my head around the concept of wanting to "protest" the program due to that. The idea you'd protest the team solely because you don't think the quarterback has a big enough arm, giving no consideration to whether the team's actually successful on the field or not, is asinine and makes you look spoiled and out-of-touch with the reality of college football.

In MHO....... If it's painful again with TR (assuming he doesn't improve), and BK doesn't give AH, or EG a shot,,, BK will be on the hotseat by year end. I'm sure TR can, and will improve, but he is not a fit for the BK offense, nor does he have the raw skills to overcome the fit issues. Then there is the GK spin. I don't think he commits unless BK promises him a shot day one.

BK is building a quality D, which will keep us in most games. My bet, TR starts the season, gets the hook during the MSU game for either EG or GK....

if we lose to MSU and UM, and TR is still the starter, can't say I'd be watching either until one of the other guys gets a shot. I haven't lost faith in BK, but you can't let a QB struggle year after year without trying something different. I'm OK with this year's struggle as I can understand the decisions somewhat. Next year is a different story.

And to all the folks who can't respect other folks opinions, or take things personally on a message board....... remember two things.... #1 this is a game. #2 everyone is entitled to their opinion....... If we were all saying the same thing, is there any point to conversation or message boards. Keep in mind we are all passionate about the Irish, and love the school. If we didn't, would we be on this board? If we all accepted sub-par performance, we would never fire a coach, bench a QB, or debate any of this. And yes, sometimes, turn the TV OFF.... If however you are so passionate about your opinion, that you attack others because of their opinions, you probably need to seek some help.....

I don't think Kelly is intentionally holding Hendrix back, I just think that he hasn't spent the time to develop him. I've heard him say that Hendrix doesn't have a grasp of the playbook yet, but if what I've heard is true, then that's not the full story.

Nice post...

I think Tommy is in for some competition...I think he'll develop more physically and mentally...but I don't think he suddenly gets wheels...and in the absence of Floyd, wheels are precisely what we'll need back there to keep drives alive. Tommy needs someone to emerge in the receiver corps BIG TIME to keep that job.

Now...Use of initials is a crisis of clarity...I mean come on dude, its confusing...

BK...head football coach or home of the whopper...??? TR...starting QB or the Rough Rider president...??? AH...Gimmick QB or unit of energy measurement...??? EG...Scout team QB or "for example" abbreviation...??? GK...highly touted recruit or glycerol kinase...???

How would I know what the hell you are talking about? :)

Keep posting...beyond the "Crisis of Clarity" I liked what you said.

I'm also throwing the random idea out there that Kelly really wants to sign Gunner Kiel and he feels the best way to do that is to play Rees. If Kelly played Crist this year then Kiel would be worrying how in the world he is going to pass 4 QBs next year and would have to figure Crist would get a 5th year. If Kelly were to start Hendrix, Kiel would worry that Hendrix is Kelly's guy and is only one year older than him and fear he might not be given a chance to play until his senior year.

This all may be a stretch but I don't think Kiel is worried about committing to ND and getting a chance at the QB position every time he watches Tommy Rees play. Tommy Rees is winning football games at ND but he's not scaring off any prospective stud QBs from enrolling.

There's a part of me that does feel that Kiel--even if he signs--won't be ready for a starting job next year.

As much as I rag on Rees, all in all ND is in pretty good shape as far as QBs go. While I think Kelly has unfair allegiance to Rees this year, I think that's more because he wants no part of Dayne Crist. I am almost certain that Kelly will have no allegiance next year to Rees. If Rees gets the job it's because he truly beat out the other guys, and not because he's had a good record at ND. Kelly recruited Golson and Hendrix is a perfect fit in the spread offense. Trust me, there no way Kelly will prefer a slow, small QB with a weak arm that he didn't recruit over these guys unless Rees continues to beat them out in practice. So I'm going to have to trust Kelly on this one.
