'12 IN QB Gunner Kiel (Cincinnati Transfer)

Evaluating talent is subjective.

However, being ranked by most scouting services as the #1 or #2 player at his position should indicate the kid is pretty good (no degree required for common sense).

Intangibles you ask? Listed anywhere from 6'3-6'4 and between 200-215 lbs (Brady Quinn-esque)

Tangibles: According to ESPN, his key traits are:

Accuracy
Arm Strength
Reads
Athleticism

Only missing Delivery in the QB category. (For the record, ESPN has Jameis Winston ranked at #1 , grade of 84 and his key traits are only Arm Strength and Athleticism.)

If that doesn't fit your desires, look no where else but who has offered, among others:

USC (Ineligible but most certainly would be between 10-15)
Florida
Georgia (#14)
LSU (#1)
Michigan (#18)
Oklahoma (#5)
Wisconsin (#17)
Alabama (#3)
TCU (#19)
Notre Dame

(BCS Rankings)

Dilfer's comments that I quoted above [about leadership] could fall under "intangibles" as could his concern[?] over Gunner's goofball personality.

Looking at Rivals.com, here are # 1 (2 and 3)QB's from previous years. '09-- Matt Barkley '08-- Pryor, Gabbert '07-- Jimmy Pickles, Ryan Mallett '06-- Stafford, Tebow '05-- Mark Sanchez '04--Rhett Bomar '03--Kyle Wright '02 Vince Young. I would take anyone of those QB's (Maybe not Wright) I think odds are in your favor when you land the top QB...9/10 times they produce like elite talent. I could care less what any camps say at this point. You get the top QB...Odds are you win...ALOT!

I might add also that to my reading you will not find Barkley, Clausen, Cam Newton on the Elite 11 lists.

I was just asking...are there any general comments regarding his intangibles? I know there was some negative news when Clausen first came on campus.

All good. Hence my IDK smiley face guy thing. lol

Depends on who you ask I suppose which was the point of my last post, it's all subjective. ESPN has a nice little scout write up on him but was last updated in June. For them, the only problem they see is his delivery but it's nothing that can't be coached. That's the big thing with scouts, if it's something that can be taught then usually there isn't a problem but you can't teach things like arm strength and athleticism.

Ironic because ESPN has Crist ranked #2 behind Pryor in '08. lol

I feel sort of like the old joke where the giant defensive lineman grabs a whole bunch of offensive players and tosses them out, one by one, until he finds the guy with the ball: just give Kelly four or five good prospects and let him figure out which one or ones fit the system the best.

This, to me, has always been one of the best things about the Kelly hire: he can both recruit guys (perhaps not 4 or 5 stars) who can excel in his system (that's what he did at Cincy, eg, where his classes were barely top 100), but at the same time develop a system to showcase his best (4 and 5 star) talent -- think Mardy Gilyard at Cincy. Except that he'll have the chance for better recruits at ND than he did at Cincy, if not quite all the 5 stars a factory like Alabama can get.

Kiel sounds, at a bare minimum, like someone Kelly can work with.

Wooleybug...
at what point did I say he was not any good? Every post dealt with correcting someone who stated he made the elite 11. He did not. Also stated that they said something negative about him but could not remember what. He was eliminated for a reason and they did say it. Just not sure what it was. Agreed that it was a few days and does not matter much. Just talking about elite 11 and you stuck your nose in a conversation and assumed I meant something different than I said.

First of all, I was answering his question pretty much at the same time as you, so I didn't stick my nose into anyone's conversation. It's not like I butted in on a pm, he asked a question to the entire board. Second of all, you said that he didn't perform well. Here is your original quote.

Gunner did not perform well at the final competition. He did make the tv show but did not finish in the final 11. Got ripped by the guys. I could be wrong but I think they said he was not competitive or did not step up. Sorry I just remeber him getting eliminated.

I didn't put words in your mouth, those are your exact words. So when you asked, "when did I say he wasn't any good?"... well, in your first sentence above. You also said that he "got ripped", which is also untrue. But post me up a link to the Elite 11 Wiki page again, maybe I will find it there.

I'm the last person to question on Kiel... I follow the kid like Johnnykillz follows Bieber.

OK... Can everyone agree that this kid is one of the top QB's coming out of 2012... I don't think there is any denying that. Can everyone agree that while Rees is good at QB, his is not a Newton, Vince Young, ect that can burn you with his arm or legs. Given Kelly's offense, if you can only throw and not run, that is the same as eating a hot dog without the garnish... I like Tommy, but when he runs out of the pocket, I think everyone one of the lineman could beat him in a race. I think everyone need to let Kelly decide what he needs and spend less time judging the talent. The same talent that could be reading this board, please keep that in mind....

The bolded part is an oxymoron. I've been here for awhile and don't think I have ever seen everyone agree on one topic.

If you don't agree with the bolded part, you have to be a moron... so I think we are in agreement :)

Per Sapp will be a last minute decision to attend the game Saturday or not.

Arkansas, LSU, Vandy, Tenn, and USC are the competition from what he and Wiltfong have heard.

BK, Molnar, and Hinton are all recruiting him.

Per 247 tunnel vision Keith Marshall was asked about Gunner Kiel and said it would be huge for Our program and that a lot of players will start looking our way. Also thinks Kiel will eventually land with the Irish

“@SWiltfong247: Gunner Kiel with a Brett Favre like completion falling to the turf. He literally is getting hit on every pass. Very poised.”

“@Jake_Brown: Gunner Kiel will be fortunate to walk away from this game in one piece. He's getting hit a lot. As in, like, every play.”
