I actually like Mayock...he at least seems to have a grasp of the game of football and isn't a total loss as a sportscaster. However, Hammond just brings nothing to the table. Can't we get a Notre Dame alum to pair with Mayock? What about Bettis? Surely he could fit that into his schedule. Hell, for that matter...how about Brady Quinn? He doesn't seem to have much to do right now...

Don't usually mind Mayock either.

NBC needs to improve overall broadcast... Hammond gone will be a HUGE step in the right direction IMHO.

The reaction to the Carlo taunting penalty captures the whole career of this guy doing Notre Dame games-that comment was arsinine/stupid/out of place/bias/spoken as someone who doesnt know football from flying the space shuttle. I don't like Hammond one bit, it's almost as if NBC dislikes Notre Dame and out of spite they send this clown out to call the game. Why not Dan Hicks? He called the USF game and though it didn't go ND's way at least it was bearable to watch from a commentators perspective! GO IRISH!!!

I dont mind Mayock either, seem pretty knowledgable... but he is terrible with names and if I cring every time when he corrects the fact he said the wrong name with "my bad".

I love Mayock. He's usually insightful and a million-billion times better than ND hater Pat Haden.

But Hammond? He needs to go. Uninteresting, talks through plays, gets players names wrong, etc.

I like Mayock, but NBC tries way too hard to not be pro-Notre Dame that the production actually comes out as anti-Irish. Just look at the guys associated with the broadcast:

Mayock is played for BC. Pat Haden (current USC AD and former Trojan QB) did color for years. Doug Flutie is in the studio talking his nonsense, and he's a ****ing BC legend. Tom Hammond obviously is not a pro-Irish guy.

Not only is there not a "Notre Dame guy" involved with the broadcast, it has been a steady trend for NBC to hire people who clearly don't like the football team they are covering!

Dick Enberg & Pat Haden


Before that, it was a mish-mash of Charlie Jones, Hammond and Enberg with some rare Don Criqui thrown in. Collinsworth was the color man with Hammond for every game in '92, and it was Enberg and Bill Walsh for all of '91. 1993 through 1996 had seemingly not pattern. Randy Cross, Bob Trumpey, Collinsworth all provided color. Even Paul Maguire and Phil Simms did the '95 Texas game.

Enberg was clearly the best of the bunch, but he is basically retired now. Charlie Jones was good (loved his voice), but he died a couple years ago.

I remember against Air Force, Mayock gave a quick run down on the differences between thr triple option, speed option, reverse option, etc. it was done towards the beginning of the game, for a team that was going to be running all of these types of option plays. so rather than just calling all of those plays 'the option' he actually broke it down. Good stuff

I say get rid of Hammond IF, and only IF, there is already a good replacement lined up. someone who is clearly better, not jsut someone who is marginally better. I dont really enjoy Hammond all that much, but I must admit, dropping F-Bombs on Hammond is somewhat of a tradition when watching ND games in my house.

Good point. There is something to be said of the side-show entertainment The Corpse provides during broadcasts.
