Went to the same school as Manti and Toma. Was a freshman when they were on the team, so he never played with them, although he was called up to practice with them at the end of the year. Also played basketball with them.

If I had a chance to play side by side with them that would be awesome

Stated that environment and comfortability will be major factors. Wants to be welcomed and feel at home. Academics will also be a deciding factor.

His 40 does not impress me at all, especially because he is only 230 pounds.

I'm more concerned how long it takes him to cover the 5 or so yards to the QB

Everyone talks about about Luke (his teammate) but we can't forget about Buckner here.

The thread has been dormant. I was wondering what jason knows putting Buckner on his OTHERS List but not including his teammate. That recent Kaumahule article was the first mention I've seen of Buckner in months.

I think it's ridiculous that there is one highschool team with two talented 6'7" DEs.

But yes, I saw Buckner on his Watch List and it's why I commented.

Hawaii is far away...takes awhile for info to get to the main land.

I'll gladly move there and scout players for ND. Pay me $50k/year and it's done. This is probably cheaper than flying out coaches to do the recruiting, so I'm really just saving ND money. I'm selfless like that.

It's just as far for the Kaumahule news to travel and that's been getting to the mainland.

BTW, mainland is one word when speaking of the continental U.S. Within the state of Hawaii, the island of Hawaii would be the main land.

Tidbit on DeForest's recruitment from ESPN's day one notes at the Opening (more general recruiting info at the link):

Honolulu Punahou School defensive end DeForest Buckner has offers from eight Pac-12 schools and has been linked to Notre Dame and Texas A&M, but three schools have already made the cut for official visits.

"Three that I know of are Oregon, UCLA and Cal-Berkeley," Buckner said. "I met coaches at all three schools, and they're really nice. Coach Tosh [Lupoi] at Cal is cool. He stayed and watched me work out at a practice for almost five hours in the spring. He was telling me, 'I know your mom is worried about academics, and if you are, then Cal is the place.'

"I also like coach Jerry Azzinaro at Oregon. He's really cool as well. He was telling me that some schools will try to recruit me at a certain position, and then when you get there, they will move you to a different position. If I were to commit to Oregon, they would only look at me at defensive end or drop linebacker."

A promise to not move Buckner -- who has the frame for offensive line at 6-7 and 230 pounds -- from defensive end might be the biggest key in landing his commitment.

"I'm a defensive guy," he said. "I like to get after it."

The Opening notes: Bri'onte Dunn still a Buckeye ... for now - ESPN

Small mention in report on OL Banner

Small mention in report on OL Banner

Justin Hopkins, 247
July 11

Free Link: Offensive lineman review at The Opening

Zach Banner - Banner did not have a great first day. However after day one, the lineman watched film and came out for day two making adjustments. Banner made the right adjustments as he had a great day two. He's big, I don't mean lineman big, I mean baby Shaq big. His footwork is surprisingly good considering he's 6-foot-9, 310 pounds. Once Banner gets his hands on you forget about going anywhere but down. His biggest "kryptonite" was some of the more athletic ends he faced in the event. Several, including DeForest Buckner, were able to get by him with their speed rush. Banner arguably has the biggest upside of all in attendance with his combination of size and ability to learn from direction.

I really like Buckner and Luke Kaumatule. Both seem to be gaining more attention. I also love the attitude and work ethic the Hawaiians bring.

Good luck with that. I lived in Hawaii for two years, 15 years ago, and it was expensive as hell. I doubt that it has gotten LESS expensive, in the last 15 years. Hold out for $80K.
