We all probably have our own guy that we think would be a good hire for Notre Dame outside of the Head Coach names commonly mentioned for the job.

Im specifically talking about assistant coaches or some guys who are coaches at programs that aren't exactly with a high stock right now due to their teams success.

My OOLF Candidate that would be a good hire for Notre Dame:

David Reaves, QB coach for Tennessee.

Reaves is one of the brightest young football minds ironically discovered by Notre Dame legend Lou Holtz at South Carolina, its rare to find a coach given an assistant job as important as QB coach at 23 years old. Reaves coached up the QB's there for several years and survived the coaching change to Spurrier who then gave him the title of recruiting coordinator. Reaves' improvement in 1 year with Jonathan Crompton, who is now one of the better senior QB's in the country, along with his recruiting efforts at Tennessee is just a clear sign that this young man will one day be a great Head Coach. Reaves is college football's version of Josh Pastner, the young Memphis college basketball coach. We could build on a 30 year old guy like Reaves taking over and leading this team for 30 years or more.

haha

You can blame that on Lane Kiffin, we all know how he likes them shady coming from U$C.

Reaves is Kiffin's brother-in-law.

Never said that the brightest kids attend Tennesee. It's pretty stupid to rob someone wearing clothes that the athletic department only gives to their players..

My personal favorite out of left field hire would be Muschamp, the DC from Texas. Has turned that defense into a juggernaut in his time there, also coached amazing defenses at LSU as well.

this would be my choice

Hes definetly up there with me, the problem is the defense, and specifically the secondary which hes responsible for. Hes going to be a HC one day, he'll probably have to start off in the MAC but he definetly has the potential to be a very good one.

Really? Put the koolaid down.

Venables from OU if Stoops doesn't come. Why not David Cutliffe from Duke via Tennessee. He was widely regarded as the actual success Fulmer had and has made Duke a non-laughing stock. Hell he almost beat Weis.

Impossible since Texas named him Mack Brown's successor in 2012.

But I'd be excited if we were to get Muschamp.

Muschamp is my guy too. He is also a good guy, I've had the pleasure of talking football with him a few times.

Another left field guy is Kirby Smart DC Alabama. He will be a head coach in the next few years.

Yeah, but he's definitely not out of left field whatsoever. He's on the favorites list in an article in the SB Tribune, and he was mentioned on several shows on ESPN this weekend. It would be interesting if it came down to him if he'd get out of that contract (should he choose).

As for the Tennessee QB coach, honestly I know nothing about the guy. But I do know that Kiffin can't get a QB there to save his life. He has a HUGE opportunity for immediate playing time, and every big name has turned him down, including our own Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix. If that kid wants an opportunity to work his magic, Kiffie-boy might want to get him a big-time QB...

I retract my Muschamp statement. We really really really need an experienced D1 coach who has taken multiple teams to BIG bowl games and regular finished in the top 10..... yea i said it. Muschamp prolly is a good guy, a great DC, but no thanks.

Gauranteed, we will get a NC championship if we do get that. Read my last post in the 2010 coaching candidates if you dont believe me.

Air Force's coach Troy Calhoun. He's a big Air Force guy so he might be tough to get to leave, but he's only 43 I think, and he's done very well at Air Force. He went 9-4 his first year and 8-5 last year. They are 7-5 this year with a 17-point loss to BYU and 4 closes losses (7 points or less) to TCU, Utah, Navy, and Minnesota. Keep in mind those 3 seasons come after Fisher DeBerry went 5-6, 4-7, and 4-8 his last three years.

In 2007 they beat TCU, Utah, and ND and would have beaten Cal in the bowl game (up 21-0) but lost their QB.

Of the 14 losses under Calhoun, only 5 have been by more than one score.

Before Air Force, he was the OC of the Houston Texans and before that of Wake Forest (#1 offense in the ACC in 2002) and Ohio University.

His offense uses a large variety of formations, all of which they are a threat to do basic run plays, run the option, or throw the ball.

Last year they ran the ball for 267 yards a game and 82 passing yards a game, while they ran for 273 yards a game and 82 passing yards this year. Over 6 guys have run for 200 yards this year and over 7 did it last year.

Not saying I want him because Skip Holtz is my first choice after our A-list (Meyer, Stoops, Kelly, Gruden, Dungy, Harbaugh) but I'd take him over Fitzgerald.

2007. NDs only win at home that year. The score was 28-7, but 2 of those TDs came late in the first half on fumbles.

Cutliffe didnt go to Duke until 2008. That Duke game was incredibly ugly though. And I agree, if Cutliffe were younger, say in his 40s, I would have him ahead of Kelly on my wish list.

My bad, I thought 2007 was his first year. Makes him even more impressive.

No Muschamp, No Charlie Strong, No Tennessee guy whi i cant name right now. I want a guy with head coaching experience. If we are going down this road, why not Gene Chizik or Dewayne Walker?

on a side note i will always root for Corwin Brown wherever he ends up (as long as it aint Michigan)

they looked very good against alabama, very well coached, very disciplined. i like chizik. and the sec is probably the toughest conference right now. just saying.
