QUESTION:Thoughts on G. Kiel's decommitment to IU?

LYNN: If in fact he decommits, it would be a real blow to IU's efforts to turn the program around. It would send an undesirable message to other recruits considering IU.

JEREMY: I suppose technically that's a high school sports question. For anybody that remotely follows college football recruiting, not a big surprise. A commitment in football is nothing like a commitment in basketball. And in the case of a high profile guy like Gunner Kiel, schools are going to keep knocking on the door every single day.

For Kiel, it's probably a good idea to weigh his options, and at the end of the day, maybe he comes back to IU, though I doubt it. The word is Notre Dame is now in the mix, a school that wasn't among Kiel's previous suitors. The Irish are much closer to home than Alabama or the like, and a much better program than the Hoosiers, so it really makes sense. All IU fans can really ask is that he not wind up at Purdue.

Gunner Kiel not coming to IU

No idea who these guys are, but they are talking about Kiel and ND.

Well this would be a pleasant surprise. Wouldn't be shocked to see Gunner come to ND and be a 2-4 year starter. I really don't see him going to Michigan (even though supposedly their coaches are going to stop by this week) and Oklahoma/Alabama arguably have much harder QB situations for him to break into early. At ND Tommy Rees will be a junior when he's a frosh (RS) and then a senior for his first year of eligibility. Hypothetically he could pull an Andrew Luck and supplant him (unlikely) or simply take over the reigns as a Soph with 2 years of time to learn the ropes and therefor not get fed to the Wolves.

I'll cross my fingers. I think this could also push us over the top with a big time WR like Agholor.

Obviously none of us know what is truly going on behind the scenes, which makes recruiting interesting and stressful at the same time. Having said that, I would imagine that Coach Kelly would have informed Gunner if he felt that there was "too" much of a log jam in the QB dept. for us. I really like our chances and I think that Tommy will be in a battle next year to keep his starting job-just my thoughts.

Tommy is going to have to battle for his job every year. With or without a Kiel commitment.

We already have a logjam at QB. Rees (starter) Hendrix (change of pace who looked really good) and Golson (future QB?), not to mention Crist

add Kiel to that mix, and there will be a transfer. maybe more than one. What if Kiel's commitment would mean a Golson transfer? Would you rather have Kiel as our QB of the future than Golson?

I haven't read the 1000 posts today. I am in the minority in that I don't really want him to take up one of our scholarships, though, in the few posts that I did read. Damn. Whatever.

You have to accumulate the most talent as you can and let them battle it out. If people want out, that is their decision. I love Golson, but if he wants to be the QB he's going to have to earn the job. I don't want anyone annointed. I want someone who has won the job - the better the competition for the job the better.

I have a feeling that we wouldn't have any tranfers. Theese kids want to compete. Rees is used to battling, Hendrix has a role and is a premed, Golson will have a shot to earn the starting spot or change positions, and Kiel will compete in the future for the starting role.

It would be nice to finally have this type of situation, kinda like USC has had in recent years.

I would not want to see Golson transfer. Having said that, I again think that Coach Kelly and the entire staff weighs all of consequences if Gunner would commit and it's impact on the team. The question would be who would Kelly rather have.

Every elite program has "the next stud" committing on a yearly basis. As with in life, if you want it, you have to earn it! We have had several QB's transfer from ND and go on and have less than stellar careers (at lower level schools).

This is exactly what I was thinking

Gunner played against my brother's high school team a few weeks back (Columbus East vs. Floyd Central). Floyd has the state's leader in rushing yards and Gunner led them in dramatic fashion in an offensive showdown.

No need to mention Crist. He's gone after this year.

Kiel commit wouldn't on it's own have any impact on Golson one would think. I believe if Kiel committed, the domino that would fall would be Kelly not extending a 5th yr. Option to Crist (if he wanted to come back).

Yeah, I kind of figure that, but also I knew your stance a year ago. Legacy or not. I would rather go after a position of greater need.

Even though I may get ripped for saying it, I'm kind of with you on this one, Backhand. I wouldn't be upset if Kiel came, but if it means we lose out on an Armstead, Odenigbo, Thompson, K. Marshall, or Agholor, I'd be upset about losing a player like that. I know people on here say that players like Thompson, Armstead, K. Marshall, and Agholor we take no matter what (and I agree), but at a certain point, limited numbers do become a factor. I think all of the players visiting this weekend (and beyond) do have some legitimate interest in coming to ND, and I think the coaches have legitimate interest in wanting all the players that are coming this weekend (and beyond) to come to ND. Obviously ALL the players aren't going to commit and come to ND, but I think getting 6 or so commits of all the ones visiting ND this weekend and in the next few weeks is virtually a given. And a coach (well, a good coach) has to wage the ever-present battle of needs-vs.-wants. Unfortunately, I think Kiel (and every other QB this year) fall more into the category of a "want" instead of a "need." I think the better question to ask may be, "Would you rather have Kiel this year (and thus, not another player we're recruiting hard and heavy), or the known entities of Rees, Hendrix, Golson, and the likelihood of signing another highly-rated QB next year?" I will say that if Kiel's commitment means another QB currently on the roster transfers, then so be it. It's all probably for the best anyway.

I don't know- just something to consider in all this.

I couldn't disagree with you more. I don't think anything is a given in recruiting, much less 6 verbals out of 16 or so of the top recruits in the nation, several of whom already have pronounced other leaders or are committed to other schools. I love your optimism, but there is no way that's a given by any stretch of the imagination.

Didn't play at all tonight, coach said he was hurting practice earlier in the week. Hmmm. Then there is this:

“@BryanDFischer: Columbus East wins 49-21. Gunner Kiel very tight-lipped about his decommitment afterward. Will be in South Bend & does have interest in ND.”
