Game views:1). Props for Blanton, Smith, and the O-line generally.
). Whenever Lou Nix was in the game, the MSU running attack stopped totally from tackle to tackle. Even they began to recognize this and stopped trying it. Big Lou has given us a SEC monster middle. Now we need to keep him conditioned enough to play.
). Lynch was almost unblockable, but he too gasses out and needs a blow---even tapped his helmet "Coach get me out of here once". Not using him in the previous two games was an error of cowardice even given that he might not always cover gap responsibilities. One of the few coaching decisions that I disagree with.
). our linebackers have been more than disappointing. Thank God the D-Line is so good. Outside linebacking play in this game was almost invisible [I forgive Niklas but still it stunk]. Neither Fox nor Calabreese has a clue on pass defense. I'm still waiting for a REALLY good Manti Te'o play [I never thought I'd be saying that]. Maybe it's poor scheme.
). Our receivers, with the exception of Riddick, have been fine to great. Have no idea what's so mediocre about Theo, maybe he'll break out now that all the return stuff is gone from his duty agenda.
). Cierre had another great first half, but Jonas looked like a man all game. We could decide to use Jonas more in my opinion.
). Tommy..... Tommy still doesn't see the d-back who is not in primary coverage [and reading his eyes to slide into the play]. Although far less tunnel-visioned than Dayne, he still misses the off-line defender. Other than that he's usually pretty good. And I still think he's growing into the job well.
). Kickoff coverage unaccountably stinks. We used to be best in the nation at this.
). GAIII. Nice speed but great blocking on the td too. Fumbled, but he's awfully young. Stay with him. He's neither as good nor as bad as he looked yet. My guess is he'll do well as the season goes.
). Goodman...unbelievable drop. He did it once last season too. Maybe one a year is his quota.
). Coaching...Kelly and Diaco did fine but not fabulous. MSU made some run defense adjustments at halftime which we couldn't really solve. Diaco has yet to get his linebackers functional at anything resembling high level, and he's their coach. Maybe the talent level really isn't there yet. I'm a broken record on defensive speed and I believe that the linebacking corps is the one group that substantially lacks it on D. I'm really waiting for Councell-like players.
). We waxed MSU 31-13. THAT should be the biggest statement in the end. Even though we "ain't purrfect", we're pretty darned good overall.
