Your statement is actually more misguided than his. He's a hairpuller but you as a fan should have some idea of the truth. ND's 2011 schedule would rank as one of the toughest in the SEC. In 2010 it was tougher it would have ranked higher than anyone in the SEC (and that includes their Championship Game which isn't a regular season opponent but gets lumped into the rankings). In 2003 (the only other year I have ready access to) ND had the Toughest Schedule in the NATION!

In this year's magazine Steele in discussing ranking toughest schedules methodology noted that in 2003 ND had the #1 Toughest Schedule in the Nation. So it isn't anything new.

Yes, he claimed that he was getting ALOT of ND hatemail and he referenced two with the same point. That ND played 9 bowl teams teams last year.

His rebuttle was that there are 35 bowl games so 70 teams were in a bowl. He went on to squeal about how plenty of teams could claim they had 8 or 9 bowl teams on their schedule.

He pointed out that we beat the BCs and Purdues but when it comes to major BCS teams we get stomped. "What about LSU, Ohio State??"

What really pissed me off is he said that being an independent gives us the ability to schedule weak teams back to back and never play two tough weeks in a row. Then he almost literally said this: "You won't get that in the Pac12, the Big12, the Big10, the SEC.. in the Big10 you'll have to play Wisconsin.. then Iowa.. long pause (because he knew he had nowhere to go to not sound like an idiot)... Penn State" HA!

top level defensive recruits win championships. Kelly is a top level coach - but top level coaches lose games when they don't have top level talent.

also not 1 other conference has schedules like the SEC schedules. Notre Dame should get points for not having teams like LA-Monroe, Kent State and San Jose State on their schedule like the other top teams do.

This year's seniors all came from Weis' heralded 2nd ranked 2008 recruiting class. If the defense has largely disappointed over that period, blame poor player development, yearly system changes, and incompetent defensive coordinators. Now that they've had two years (1) in the same system; (2) with the same coaching staff; (3) that actually knows how to develop talent, watch out. If we make a BCS game this year, it won't be because of Nix, Lynch, and Tuitt, but because EJ, KLM, Fleming, Gray, Blanton, Smith, Cwynar, and Slaughter were finally given the opportunity to realize their potential.

So that's why Saban lost to LA-Monroe in '07. I didn't realize the Warhawks had that much more top level talent than Bama did. I always though it was because Charlie Weatherbie coached the pants off Saban that afternoon.

Go look at Bear Bryant schedules through the decades. It was no accident that the big games were spaced out with cremepuffs or open weeks preceding. When the SEC when to a Division format with a championship game they dummied down the schedules both in-conference and out of conference. Before the Division format there used to be an axiom in the SEC "you can't win the league with two losses".

They've watered down schedules by reducing the traditional powers playing each other as frequently as they used to. SEC schedules get a boost the week after the regular season ends and they play their championship game. Then their conference tie-ins usually provide a substantial edge over their opponents. That then carries over into post bowl strength of schedule readjustments. The media and fans than take those skewed post season numbers and call it "the schedule". Championship Games and Bowl Games don't schedule opponents unlike the regular season. But crafty conference commissioners can schedule their conference to manipulate "the schedules" and more importantly the polls. The SEC paid tribute to SEC Commission Roy Kramer more his visionary approach to strategic scheduling. Kramer coincidentally was Commissioner of the BCS.

The SEC has been most vocal whenever there is any discussion on not counting Division 1aa wins. They couldn't fill their bowl allotments without the Little Sisters of The Poor.

I noticed that he held up West Virginia as an example of how tough LSU's schedule is and used Pitt to show how weak ND's schedule is. Am I the only one who does not see how WV is any better than Pitt? The recent history between these two teams is pretty close as far as I can recall.

I also notice he judiciously chose to focus on LSU whom he knew well was playing Oregon in their OOC schedule. What about all of the FCS teams the SEC teams play? Georgia Southern (Alabama), Missouri State (Arkansas), Furman (Florida), Coastal Carolina (Georgia), Jacksonville State (Kentucky), Tennessee-Martin (Miss. St.), Southern Illinois (Ole Miss), Montana (Tennessee), Elon (Vanderbilt). So don't tell me how unbelievably tough the SEC schedules are.
