With Tom Hammond working World Track and Field Championships in Korea, Dan Hicks will do NBC play by play for ND-USF on Sept. 3.

Now I REALLY can't wait for Sept. 3rd!

Don Criqui.

Also, Dan Hicks is bad luck. I believe he was the announcer at the 2002 Boston College disaster.

Haahaha Don Crique is so freaking bad at play by play it's almost funny to listen to him. He gives you absolutely no sense of what is going on and never raises his voice so you are never able to tell if it's a big play until he tells you after it's over.

"crist back. Throws over the middle. Caught by Floyd. He will run it in. Touchdown. A 23 yard touchdown pass to Michael Floyd. Hm, what a play."

I miss Mayock. I continue to wait for Tom Hammond's corpse to start decomposing on camera.

Pinch me-too good to be true and yes Crique would be fantastic with the Pink man. Now if we can get Tony Roberts involved I'll be in telecast heaven.

well that must've been his hayday, because listening to him now is excruciating. i remember listening to him last year at the end of the Pitt game (which had a pretty exciting ending) and it was like listening to the 4th quarter of an NFL preseason game. My favorite was the play where Crist his Floyd on a shallow cross (it eventually got called back due to a questionable holding call) and he ran it all the way into the end zone. You wouldn't have known it was a touchdown the way he called it.

"crist hits floyd, he could go. still running. touchdown. wait there's a flag."

it was almost comical. he is just as bad calling NFL games for CBS, but at least you aren't relying on his voice to tell you what's going on b/c you can see it on TV.

Please make this permanent somehow. I appreciate the reprieve, but I'm being greedy. The dude straight up looks like a tranny with all that makeup. I remember the first game, I posted about the makeup and a tranny comment, and sure enough, right after, ACamp and some others had the same comment. Any man who needs to wear that much makeup on TV needs to go. Now I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight thinking of all that blush on his cheeks...

Well, he is 71 years old, and at risk of pissing Nanker off anymore about "old people" in the stadium, I'll say that I very much enjoy his commentary. I was at Cleveland Browns stadium in 1986 when the Browns played the Broncos in the AFC Championship game and he did the commentary.... I guess I just sort of grew up around his voice and it's something familiar to me. Kind of the way most of us grew up with Tony Roberts or Lyndsey Nelson. I think he's great for sports and great for ND football....so I guess we have to agree to disagree.

Be a little kind to my old classmate Don Criqui. He actually has been a good announcer for many years, even if not a spectacular "entertainer". And as a very loyal ND grad, he has been good for Notre Dame. As in any business, veterans can help rookies, and I'll bet Don helped other ND grads get settled in the business. I understand people wanting to be wonderfully entertained by every bit of their lives, but just say something like "Don is an accomplished veteran announcer, who, for me, is not as sharp in play-by-play detail as I'd like. So, I'd prefer someone else." The responses which attempt to paint other folks [who usually have accomplished far more than we ourselves have in their professions] in demeaning terms baffles me.

I feel you guys, and I do get it. I've been guilty of saying it in mean terms OMM, more of the heat of the moment type of things. But in reality, Don Criqui is a great man and a huge ND fan. That cannot be denied. I'd want my kids to emulate that man. I love hearing it when he is interviewed...still has that great voice.

That being said, whereas he was once also a great announcer, his skills have diminished. Most people who have listened to him lately have seen it (well, heard it). He just misses a lot of things, and he's become a lot more dry as the years have passed. I had to listen to the overtime of the MSU game in the car on the way to a party (we were already 3 hrs late b/c of me and my obsession to ND football), and his call of the fake field goal left me clueless as to what the hell happened for a good 5 minutes. And that's happened a lot lately. But OMM, you're absolutely right, there are ways that myself and others can say it in a nicer way, but this is the Internet, and as you know that just doesn't happen very often.

As for Hammond though, I have no such kind words. He was never good, and continues to be awful. I really hope he gets Wally Pipped here, and the other guy stays on forever. Give the great Mike Mayock something to work with NBC!!!

I am a big Mayock fan and hope he stays on for years to come.

With Hammond, it's been sooo long that I grew up with him and kind of look at him like I do when I see how much money is taken out of my paycheck for social security. Just shake your head and say, "ugh...damn. necessary evil you live with."

Anytime your lead announcer can't call the season opener because he's doing track and field in another country...you know there are problems.

I also heard Michael Kay can't call the Yankees game because he'll be covering some world swimming competitions in Brazil.

Took the words out of my mouth. A one yard gain up the middle sounds the same as 73 yard double reverse pass for a touchdown. I can't follow the dude...

To be fair Crique would probably do better on tv. I used to like him calling college basketball games when I was a kid.
