CINCINNATI (AP)--Yancy Gates got his own miss and put it back in with 2.4 seconds to go Saturday, giving Cincinnati a 60-58 victory over Notre Dame in a game where football was never far from mind.
There were 11 lead changes and six ties in the second half, the final one when Ben Hansbrough hit a pull-up jumper that made it 58-all with 22.6 seconds to go. After a timeout, Cincinnati got the ball to Deonta Vaughn, who drove and passed to Gates for the deciding shot.
It was the first time Cincinnati (12-6, 3-3 Big East) played Notre Dame since Brian Kelly left to become the Irish football coach. Cincinnati used the occasion to honor its Sugar Bowl team, which sat in the stands and was introduced on court at halftime. One student held up a sign that said: "Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Coach." Notre Dame (14-4, 3-2) was led by Tim Abromaitis' 16 points. Luke Harangody had 14 points on 5-of-20 shooting.

Irish held a 7 point halftime lead. This team gets passive with a lead. They have no killer instinct. The guy that needs to step it up and really take control is Tory Jackson. He is the floor general. Gotta put this one in the rearview mirror and move on. Syracuse comes calling on monday. If there is any hangover they will get ran out of the gym...

I watched the end of the game and our lack of size inside lost us this game. They drew Harangody outside and we were left with a bunch of small guys guarding their big man underneath. I understand Brey's philosophy of big men that can run and shoot, but at some point is he going to recruit a tall (6'10" +) defensive minded big man for these type of situations?

Typical Notre Dame basketball. The week before they beat #6 West Virignia then a week later they lose to a team they should beat. Brey wins the games he's supposed to lose and loses the games he's supposed to win. They will always be a mediocre team under brey. Hell they were up by 30 points at halftime against west virginia and only won by 1 point. Brey=Weis......NO KILLER INSTINCT!

I know this was a tough loss, but I dont know how you can catagorize this as a team they should have beat. They were an underdog on the road. If we had won, it would have been an upset. If anything I was encouraged with the way they played. This was a game where the Irish were playing with house money. If they win, great, its a resume builder. If they lose, its hardly a season ender. I think the same can be said for Monday's game too.

Also is it Brey's fault that Abromaitis went 1-4 from the line in the last 3 minutes, when he is over 90% from the line? Hansbrough missed a couple as well. This one is hardly on Brey.

I think that goes along with what NDOM is saying. Under Brey this squad lacks mental toughness, the killer instinct. Shooting free throws is 90% mental, especially those coming down the stretch.

I dont buy that for one second. The kid is a 92% free throw shooter. But its the coach's fault that he isnt mentally tough to make them in a close game. Might be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

That wasn't in the last 3 minutes that was All Night Long. Missed 15 out of 20

No doubt! Brey coached him to be in a position to score 20 times, he only scored 5 of his opportunities, hardly Brey's fault. The problem is our players shooting inconsistencies, it always has been. We live and die by the THREE!

I don't think the 3 was the problem yesterday. ND was 5-17 while UC was 5-21. ND outshoot them from the floor. ND gave up 18 rebs while snagged all of 4. Who was in position?

Meanwhile Nash with 0 points and 0 rebs did have 1 assist while fouling out in 13 minutes of play.

PA have you ever played hoops? Ever stepped up to the line after playing 30 plus minutes? When things like this happen once, then put it on the kid. When it is a trend that seems to continue year in and year out.... Rebounding is another thing that is all about heart. And this team struggles rebounding the basketball. Tough to win anywhere if don't clean the glass.

Nash's stat line is atrocious. Where was he at yesterday? He needs to be a contributor for this squad to make the tournament. Big East play could be rough...

Not yesterday, but 82.1132% of the time we do. Harangody was in a position to shoot it 20 times wasn't he?
