John Lattner once fumbled 5 times in one game against Purdue in 1952. Frank Leahy made him walk around all of the next week with a football taped to his hand.

Lattner was a Consensus All-American that year and the Maxwell Award winner.

And turnovers are never good, but here's a turnover conversation that would make more sense to me to argue about...what is worse, a fumble or interception?

I honestly think interceptions can be taken more lightly because it's often a sign of aggressive play by the QB where big risk comes with big reward. Where as fumbling can usually be prevented without affecting the runner's ability to make the big play.

Absolutely I agree. Interceptions for the most part are taken more lightly, probably in large part because they usually occur down field (so they sometimes feel like a punt almost!) and we've had 80 years of football knowledge telling us throwing the ball is risky, so we know and understand the consequences better.

Whereas a back is carrying the football and we have 80 years of knowledge telling us that it is supposed to be completely safe. Also, many fumbles tend to happen close to the line of scrimmage and seem more "crippling" from that aspect of turning the ball over.

I think my point was, given these arguments above, we still seem to focus our derision on the back who fumbles 2 or 3 times, more so than the quarterback who throws 12 picks...and I've always thought it's weird that even with a quarter of the turnovers, we still view the running back as having a "problem" more so than the QB.

But yeah, 5 fumbles vs. 5 picks....fumbles are much worse in that instance.

Wood does have to protect the ball better, but I'm not too worried. I really think in most cases fumbling is just dumb luck. It wouldn't surprise me if he goes the whole season without fumbling, and then fumbles a bunch of times the next year.

I actually don't worry about Cierre's game vis-a-vis fumbling. When he first was going in for Armando, he was getting the QB killed by hardly ever figuring out who to block. I thought "My Lord, we're not going to be able to play this guy".

I believe finding that out about himself produced a very helpful humbling in him, and he really dedicated himself to passblitz pick-up. By season's end, I was very impressed by how good he had gotten with it. Kelly has remarked several times since how confident he now is in Cierre's blocking.

I stayed luke-warm on Cierre not due to blocking or fumbling, but because I didn't think [and still don't] that he hit the hole all the time, nor got what the defense was giving him. I know all about the very good statistics. They're very encouraging. But I remember something from my past fandom which is heretical in most's eyes, but was very impressive to the open-minded.

There came a time in Barry Sanders' career when his erraticness at taking what the defenses were giving him produced many drive-stoppers. Detroit's offense went from the most feared in football to mediocre. Sanders still ripped off a couple of stunners a game, but the rest of the dancing choked the offense. This phenomenon got the Detroit coaching staff thinking about changing the entire offense especially in the red zone where Sanders had become fairly ineffective. Ultimately his numbers dropped off, systems changed, coaches were fired, Detroit sunk into mediocrity.

This is meant to be only mildly related to our own situation. The point is that I hope that Cierre is more decisive this year and a little less "ambitious" at hitting home-runs. That's all I'm waiting for with Cierre. He's plenty capable of doing that. Because of his admirable accomplishments at blitz pick-up, I know that he's internally-motivated to get there. I still just need to see it, so I can exhale on this issue.

P.S. I'm a lot more concerned about Jonas holding onto the ball than Cierre. If he can't, then Cam or GAIII MUST play more that Coach thinks they're ready for.

Is the freshman class scheduled for interviews at all during Camp? I would love to here Tuitt, Niklas, and McDaniel's perspective on camp so far.

The new Irish connection video series on und.com seems pretty cool. Gets me excited for the season. Looks like the team is having fun. Can't wait to see the next one. Check it out.

I couldnt imagine the goosebumps I would get by being able to go into the locker room....it would be simply amazing.

Sign up for the Coaches' Clinic next year. Everyone got the chance to go through the locker room. I even bought a pair of brand new basketball shoes while I was in there for 20 bucks! :)

Cierre really impressed me with his work ethic last year. He stayed after practice every single day and had Te'o run at him full speed to work on his blitz pick-up. He's the type of player that has the drive and desire to improve upon his weaknesses to become a complete back. I have no doubt that he has been doing everything possible to improve his ball security.

Another thing, he was seeing his first action at the collegiate level last year. Young players tend to make mistakes like fumbling, missing assignments, etc. He will only get better.

Can anyone tell me why Troy Niklas was not even mentioned in this report?

Quite frankly I'm getting tired of just getting a rundown of the players at the position. But I guess I can find footage of drills other places.

Agreed, though that one wasn't completely devoid of useful information. Sounds like Utupo is the #3 Will currently.

All BGI, via twitter:

#NotreDame Practice: A little shakeup in what we the media has access to today - last part of it so we should get to see some hitting today.

#NotreDame Practice: The post-practice interviews will be with Brian Kelly and 10 freshmen, so we'll have coverage on that as well.

#NotreDame Practice: A little Pittbull and J-Lo playing on the loud speakers to pump up the media on the way in? She is available now...
