Florida State in serious talks about moving to SEC

It's all about the money and that's technically why geography matters most.

Missouri would receive an invite simply because it would add St. Louis (#21 media market) and Kansas City (#31 media market) to the SEC's television reach. Clemson is the one I doubt most simply because it would make more sense to get into North Carolina with the addition of UNC--which wouldn't go to the SEC in my opinion.

I would like to see Arkansas and Texas A&M simply switch places and have everything go back to normal. Arkansas is unhappy in the SEC, and Texas A&M wants in.

Jayhawk, Kansas will be ok. Someone will take them.

If the Big 12 does end up collapsing, the Big 10+2 will likely expand to keep up. They'll likely rob the Big East and ACC cupboards for their programs. Most likely targets I think would be Syracuse, Uconn, Rutgers (for the NYC market), BC, Virginia Tech, and Pitt. This all assumes that Ok and Ok St go to the PAC-12.

Anyway, if they take any combination of 4 of those teams and the SEC plucks away FSU and Clemson, the Big East (football schools) and the ACC will kind of merge whatever's left and Kansas and K-state could sneak in there.

TCU, Kansas, Kansas St, UNC, UNCS, Duke, WVU, Louisville, Cincinnati, USF, Miami, Virginia, possibly Rutgers, Syracuse, UConn, BC, Virginia tech, Pitt

This conference would actually make pretty good sense because it features a lot of basketball powers that are pretty decent in football, too.

Texas has huge pull, and we have a good relationship with them. Considering they have their Longhorn Network, I could see us being able to keep ours with NBC and still join. If we have to join somewhere, I would take this over the Big 10.

Okay...geography as it relates to market size. That's true. Natural geographic rivalries are moot.
Kansas' problem is that basketball is not the cash cow that football is. We have an intense and very large following for basketball. Much of the Kansas City market is actually loyal to KU, not Missouri.

Could Notre Dame join the Big XII and still keep their rivalries?

The advantage to joining the Big Ten is that the rivalries with Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue are kept alive. There is also CIC membership which is a huge gain.

The Irish do not play any Big XII teams annually, so how would they make room for USC, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, and Navy?

Much of the Kansas City market is actually loyal to KU, not Missouri.

True, but also irrelevant. No one in New York watches Rutgers, but they're only a legitimate choice for the Big Ten because of the market size. It's not a ratings issue, it's how many households can the conference charge the cable company to give their network to.

The more I think about super conferences, the less I like the thought. Why does everyone think its such a good idea?

Think about it, imagine if ND and Pitt joined the B1G and they stuck us both in a division with Michigan, MSU, and Purdue. We'd have 4 of our more regular opponents built into the schedule, great right?

Well if we have to play 9 B1G games and get only 2 or 3 OOC games and we have to schedule Navy and USC at the very least....we'll we won't be seeing too much action outside of the B1G and that would be pretty dull and a bit shameful to me.

I have no inside info on Va Tech but would be surprised if they left unless Virginia left too. Virginia was blocking the expansion of the ACC with Boston College and Miami unless VA Tech was included. I think Va Tech would remember that, it got them out of the Big East.

That's actually mistaken. UVa wanted Tech to be NO PART of the ACC... but Virginia legislators really twisted their arm to get them to back down.

Now back to Florida State...it doesn't seem terribly likely that the Seminoles will bolt for the SEC.
I think they stay put and reign supreme over the ACC.
Mizzou and A&M are gone.

Over the course of so many years of me watching college football I have seen the likes of many independents join conferences. I remember opening up the schedule page of all the conferences and the independents used to have more teams than any one conference.


Notre Dame, Penn State, Florida State, Miami, etc., etc.,

Not so anymore. I kind of miss those days.
