Let's try something a little different here – a reality check. Once again, the student body is small when compared to those such as Penn State, Michigan, etc. It is also small in terms of stadium capacity.
Are you REALLY going to rag on alums in traditional ND gear if they don't wear the color du jour? I would guess that there are many sporting T-shirts, caps, sweatshirts and jackets that are older than many of you.
Just how many games warrant nothing but a tee? Take into account rain, cool temperatures and sleet or snow. Do you dictate a specific color sweatshirt, hooded parka or jacket as well? I brought a green coat to the Utah game last year. It was Gore-Tex™ and had a hood. It came in handy during the cool rain. Unfortunately it was "Forest Green" and not "Kelly Green.
I agree that a massive show of a single color throughout the stadium is impressive (except for the opposition's – there was a whole lot of red at last year's Utah game). And yes, a T-shirt CAN be worn over a sweatshirt, but all-in-all it just isn't practical or probable.
Keep trying though. It's a worthy goal for the young and the young at heart.
Although I've tried to deflect many of the comments directed at "senior" fans (be they alums or otherwise) with humor [though my Lenny Bruce meets Lewis Black tirade a while back was lost on some] and cold, hard facts, I DO get annoyed by some of the remarks I perceive as derision and condescension.
Keep in mind: "Time and tide wait for no man." With luck, you, too, will be made to feel "wanted and important."

Keep your hopes up, your powder dry and try your damnedest. Just throttle back a bit on the "blue hair" comments – as a favor to me.
