I was watching a video online about the "white out" at Penn State and I thought it was a really cool and impressive thing to see pulled off so well. As ND doesn't really have any one color for all fans to wear, I think it would be really cool if they had one game that all the fans were asked to wear one specific color. I don't know if anything like this has been done before, but I think it could be a really neat thing to pull out for the USC game this year. Has this sort of thing ever been done in ND stadium before? I read online that they had "black out" games for basketball in the past, but I couldn't find anything about something similar being done for a football game.

USC 2009 -- "Sea of Green"

It's hard to coordinate with the huge amount of alumni/fans that come in... would love to have it for USC again this year.

Ah I see. Just found an article on The Observer's website about it. Looks like they tried to organize it in the few weeks before the game. I think if we started to spread the word early about this game, it could be pulled off! Just picture it. Green Out under the lights against our most hated rival. Brings a tear to my eye thinking about it!

If they were smart like alot of the pro teams they would hand out the tshirts at the entrance. That way everyone was corrdinated. ND has too many fans coming from all over the country to be able to get the word out for a game having a color scheme.

You'd still have a lot of people not putting the shirts on unfortunately.

Some ND fans.....:pityno:

Oregon and Penn State actually print on the ticket what color to wear to the game depending on what section you are in.

A green out would be awesome. Like Rocket said, never going to happen at ND. But man it'd look sweet.

Yeah the older folk definitely make pulling something like this off a bit harder. I have to wonder if handing them out at the entrance would maybe make it happen. Sure, not everyone would wear it, but I'd like to believe most people would! But maybe that's just the delusion side of my ND fandom coming out. I guess the USC game this year would definitely be the best event to try something like this as everyone will be fired up and perhaps more willing to go along with it? And if Penn State has successfully done it, ND can. Come on old people get on board!

didn't someone try to make last year's Michigan game a green-out? how did that work out? (not well). I think it's just too hard to get the word out to the fanbase (which consists of too many old people who would rather wear their polo shirts under their sweaters than a green t-shirt)

pro teams sometimes give out t-shirts at the door, but it's easier for a NBA team that has to give out 20,000 t-shirts (and to a lesser extent to an MLB team, which i haven't seen to often but when the indians were in the ALCS in '07 they gave out red t-shirts at the gate, which was cool. but still, that's only 40,000) because in notre dame stadium there would be 80,000+ t-shirts you would have to give out. i just don't think ND will think it's worth it.

COULD YOU IMAGINE HOW SICK THAT WOULD BE FOR THE USC GAME THOUGH? Night game vs. our biggest rival under the lights with a GREEN OUT? how impressed would the recruits who are visiting be? how would you be able to say NO to a scholarship offer after seeing that!!!! i'm getting chills just thinking about it.

I agree the older Alum can be a pain in the ***, but not all are like that. My dad is a 61 year old Alum and would paint is face green for the game.

Yeah I was talking to a friend of mine, and we thought a good way to take care of the "getting the word out" problem could be to have the pep rally in the stadium, and announce it there. I know that for the USC game there will be enough people wanting to go to the stadium for a pep rally that you could probably get word out to a lot of the people there. And if you market it on UND.com, nd.edu and the gameday page, I think you could get the word out pretty well. The problem with the past ones was that they were primarily student run. I think the administration would be able to get the word out if they wanted, and anyone who didn't get the message would hopefully hear about it when they arrive on campus and would track down a cheap green t-shirt in the book store or something.

I was part of the pink crew in '05. The Sea of Urine shirts were awful. Recruits loved us.

Just ask the alumni association themselves to assist in organizing...get them involved up front...
Regis can pay to have a few tens of thousands of shirts ready to go without even noticing it in his checking account.

Make it an annual tradition like other schools...and get the older alumni involved.

Since when USC is a home game, Michigan is an away game and vice versa....that rotation would seem to be the best two games to alternate "Green Outs" against at home.
I wouldn't want to see the team wear green every year that day though...at least not until those greens become a symbol of excellence on the field again.

I love the idea...but this is the team of "tradition" as traditional as tradition can be, they won't even write "Irish" or "ND" on their field, and you want them to green out the stadium? I can see you getting caned or "walkered" to death in a fury of beanie wearing old fogies! haha. I kinda wish it would happen. Hell, I'd settle for a big fat leprechaun painted on the 50 yard line so you know who your daddy is while getting smoked up and down the field by us.

"make them feel wanted and important". I'm offended by this and similar statements in this thread. What basis do you have for making these statements? Here's something to think about if you can get your brain in gear. I am Notre Dame, I do feel important and I am wanted....and I think I speak for the overwhelming majority of senior alumni.

Definitely didn't mean any offense. I worded that wrong. My apologies...
there does seem to be somewhat of a disconnect between the age groups. I'm sure it's like that for most schools.

Just thinking out loud. No reason for not making new traditions though. Green outs would be pretty sweet.

Yeah, it sure seems it would need to be driven by the university to work. Shoot, when Charlie gave everyone those pea soup green "9-3 is not good enough" towels in '06 we all shook the heck out of them in the Stadium for the PSU game. Get Chuck Lennon or Regis or Digger yelling about "Green Machine" again at the pep rally, and everyone will get on board.

I was a part of the attempted green-out for the Michigan game, emailed the University Alumni Association offices directly. ND would need to get the word out on every available social media site, and still have 50,000 kelly green tshirts ready for those that fail to participate initially.

It could happen...

Let's try something a little different here – a reality check. Once again, the student body is small when compared to those such as Penn State, Michigan, etc. It is also small in terms of stadium capacity.

Are you REALLY going to rag on alums in traditional ND gear if they don't wear the color du jour? I would guess that there are many sporting T-shirts, caps, sweatshirts and jackets that are older than many of you.

Just how many games warrant nothing but a tee? Take into account rain, cool temperatures and sleet or snow. Do you dictate a specific color sweatshirt, hooded parka or jacket as well? I brought a green coat to the Utah game last year. It was Gore-Tex™ and had a hood. It came in handy during the cool rain. Unfortunately it was "Forest Green" and not "Kelly Green.

I agree that a massive show of a single color throughout the stadium is impressive (except for the opposition's – there was a whole lot of red at last year's Utah game). And yes, a T-shirt CAN be worn over a sweatshirt, but all-in-all it just isn't practical or probable.

Keep trying though. It's a worthy goal for the young and the young at heart.

Although I've tried to deflect many of the comments directed at "senior" fans (be they alums or otherwise) with humor [though my Lenny Bruce meets Lewis Black tirade a while back was lost on some] and cold, hard facts, I DO get annoyed by some of the remarks I perceive as derision and condescension.

Keep in mind: "Time and tide wait for no man." With luck, you, too, will be made to feel "wanted and important."

Joni Mitchell - Circle Game - YouTube

Keep your hopes up, your powder dry and try your damnedest. Just throttle back a bit on the "blue hair" comments – as a favor to me.

The SEC would probably come up with 10s of thousands of reasons  for a recruit to say no to ND.
