After reading this thread, this is the only thing I can come up with.

Its July and we are talking about not having a good recruiting class? i am confused.

we signed two of the best in the country at their position in Darby and Sheppard.
Greenberry is killing it this summer.
Perkins and Decker are very underrated.
Ferg is one of the top WR in Florida.
Jarron Jones, Andrus Peat, Gunner Kiel, Tee Sheppard, Ron Darby, Noor Davis have all visited this summer. To say were struggling in recruiting in July just doesn't seem right to me.

Just so no one gets confused ND has verbal commitments from these kids. They are far from signing anything yet.

That's not really what anyone is confused over. At least not Domer, he's on here posting regularly. I can see how it is worded wrong but it is more of a technicality.

Trinity started the thread wondering why we didn't have a top 10 class per ESPN at this point. We are all just basically explaining that it's early in the process and we have top guys at our needy positions with verbals.

Oh I know Domer has alot of good post. Some people who do not follow recruiting as much as most of us do could easily get confused. I know pretty much all the important dates of college football, some fans may not know the exact date of the first game let alone sigining day. So saying they are signed could easily confuse a casual recruit follower. That is all I was saying.

I think Lemming makes some good points, but I also think he is jumping the gun (as some on this board are prone to do, also). If you look at last year's class and see how much things changed in the month leading up to NSD, you see the absurdity of getting bent out of shape about a class in July. I see what ND has already committed as being a solid foundation that addresses some needs, but the relative success or failure of this recruiting cycle won't be known for months.

A lot will depend on what we end up with from the RB's and DL's we are involved with now, along with our ability to hold onto the guys we already have in the fold. If you believe in this staff's ability to recruit and you believe the reports that have us in pretty good shape with some of the elite guys we are chasing, then you can't be worried about our class just because Michigan has a ton of commitments. If our class shapes up the way it looks like it could, the quality of our class could be a lot better than Michigan's by NSD.

Lemming makes a good point about what we have done in Ohio in the aftermath of the OSU thing, but Michigan is only recruiting that part of the country and we are recruiting from coast to coast. Plus, the final chapter has not been written on the recruits from the midwest. If we end up with James, Mahone, Schutt, and possibly Odenigbo, then the idea that we struggled in the midwest will seem pretty silly. Maybe that won't happen, but ND will find another 7-10 players and the makeup of that group will determine whether this will be a decent class or a great one.

I hope Michigan's class if maxed out by the start of the season. They have a fair class as it stands now but not the kind of scary homerun type one that we should fear. If they fill up early, that only eliminates spots for the top tallent to go leaving us with an open door and welcoming arms.

Fear not, all things will get better and work themselves out as the W's get pilled in the column.

I'm going to feel bad for some of the senior's who lose their 5th year due the class that comes in due to our 10th victory.

1. We are going to lose of some kids. And we are going to jump in it with kids that arent even on the radar. Its recruiting its going to happen.

2. We have a solid base with this class with NEEDS filled at this point. We most likely arent going to take on anything but elite recruits other than at RB. In my opinion Russell is better than what people think.

3. DGB is NOT coming to ND unless we pull a miracle. Just hope he doesnt go to Oklahoma lol.

4. We have gotten elite kids to campus as stated earlier. We cant do much more than that at this time.

5. The Opening opened some doors as well as let the kids build relationships to solidify their verbals.

6. ND MUST win to start the season to continue the momentum. If we dont close with 4 Ws to end the year, you really think Greenberry/Shepard verbal without even visiting? If ND starts 1-3, we are goin to lose some kids.

7. At this point in time you are most likely not going to get a verbal from a "elite kid". Building the relationship, keeping in contact is the most important thing. When ND starts 6-0, that kid will remember what was said this summer.

8. ESPN ranks our class 15? I dont give a ****. The kids we are getting WANT to be here. They arent coming for other reasons like with past coaching staffs.

9. Michigan has a few verbals that are already looking around.

10. 2011 kids are on campus. That's all that matters to me at the moment.

I agree with all of this. The only thing I would add--which may get labeled as "homerism"-- is that I think that there really is something to not pursuing homerun threat starters at every position every year. I know what the data says about stars rankings and wins, etc., but I also think there has to be something to the strange fact that schools like USC, UF, and FSU seem to top off just before their average star ratings do (i.e., 3 great classes followed by an excellent class seems to be the formula, not 4 excellent classes). I think it really comes down to team chemistry- not everyone can be king of the world.

My ideal is having a couple stars at every position, spread out a little, and then a bunch of kids that have (a) the physical potential to break-out, (b) the ability to thrive in our system, (c) the desire to be at the school and know why, and (d) the will to work. I think Kelly and company are keeping this in mind. If we get a great safety, the combination of, say, Shaq, Baratti, C.J., and Turner seems perfect to me. It would not be better to have 4 5 stars, IMO.

I know there classes have been rated very high lately and they recruit nationally, but I think Alabama does a great job with this. They pursue the big boys, but seem to recruit a little more within their system, generally avoiding the biggest trouble makers, and still favoring kids within the contiguous states to a slightly better kid from outside the region. Nine of their fourteen commits are 3 star or unrated right now.

Unfortunately CFB is not like the NFL for the bottom-feeders. Bad records=bad recruits, not high draft picks. We win, we get the guys we want, plain and simple. With that said, JUST WIN BABY!!!

When you go 8-5....you take who you have offered. ND has not been up to par with those schools for a long time. Kelly has had one losing in his career....ill trust him lol
