If your an ND fan and are disappointed Michael probably isnt going to get any suspension then your only fooling yourself. He's paid his punishment. Our perception to the country is that we are $h!t anyways and Floyd will only help us return our name to glory after this 10 win season. WHO cares what these lame @ss CFB fans think about us cause they dont like us anyways. Lets be happy were gonna see Michael Floyd suit up for the whole season.

Now this man knows the cost; he sees the zero balance on the screen.

For some reason I thought that he was going to be back to the dorms, I read that some time back. If any one knows for sure either validate or inform me if I am wrong.

superasian wrote, "I live on the fourth floor of Siegfried, where most of our beloved football team stay for the summer."

I believe superasian was referring to a temporary summer housing situation.

Indeed.... The Michael Floyd may be rich in gold, but that gold is his to judge.

It's a classic story of boy meets girl...

ok? i'm not trying to criticize you or anything, just a little confused

Outside of ND shouldn't matter to Floyd. Ever heard "haters are gonna hate"? But he still owes ND for his oppurtunity at a livelyhood after screwing up.

After reading some of the comments, it's appearent that when it's OUR guy...he gets the pass.

If this is any other guy on any other team, we'd be killing him and them for it. Just remember that.

I thought he'd AT LEAST sit out the first game to show that we're better than other universities that give these types of free passes. ND is supposed to be different. I'm dissapointed.

But, we can now put this to rest and move on. And I'll be watching on Saturday, rooting for #3 regardless.

1. False. Every single situation is different. I can't speak for anyone else, but I would not reflexively condemn another player or school unless the particular circumstances warranted it; and I would not reflexively excuse a Notre Dame player's actions unless the particular circumstances warranted it. Here, I believe Michael has served a punishment that is, at the very least, adequate, if not excessive.

2. If ND started caring so much about what media hyenas and the internet commentariat says about it that they would screw their own students as a P.R. stunt, I would be embarrassed to be a ND fan.

Maybe I missed something but...

Maybe I missed something but...

Has Kelly even come out and said that Michael will be playing in all of the games this season?

Why are some jumping to the conclusion that Michael won't sit out any games?

When Kelly states that Floyd will be starting, then I'll celebrate.

Kelly has stated he's "optimistic" that Floyd will be reinstated by the USF game.

I'm with Rhode on this, these points are wore out and patently false.

1) I would want any student (ie not just, but including football players) of Notre Dame to be treated with a level of respect and for the university to have the students best interest at heart. Michael is willing to do the things to make up for his mistake, the university should give him the opportunity to obtian his future, as long as he is willing to work for it. Notre Dame promises a better life to students as long as they take the necessary steps, what kind of message would we be sending if we singled out a football player for his mistake? They have a responsibility of shaping young peoples lives in order to grow them into future leaders. The lack of compassion you speak of is the polar opposite of what the mission of a catholic institution stands for.

2) I dont give two craps of what fans of other schools think and I dont think the school has any responsibilites to "show how we are better" than anyone. That sounds like somethig a Roll Tider would say. We make our image through our actions, not from pandering. Furthermore, how does a 1 game suspension hurt Micael Floyd? It only hurts his teamates. A one game suspension would be a meaningless gesture of punishment that would do nothing but pander to the outsiders view of Notre Dame, which does nothing to help the longterm image of the university.

Kelly has stated he's "optimistic" that Floyd will be reinstated by the USF game.

What I don't get is that a few posters are "disappointed" that Floyd won't be suspended for a game or 2. Do they have some kind of crystal ball or something?

Floyd has a lot of work to do before Kelly will allow him to play. Like I said earlier, when Kelly states that Floyd has done everything that was asked of him and he will be starting, then I'll celebrate.

Kelly has said verbatim:

“We’re looking at Mike as an ‘all in or not’ situation,” Kelly said. “ In other words, he’s changing his life or he’s not. If he changes the way he’s lived his life, he’ll play every game for us. If he doesn’t, he won’t play one down here at Notre Dame.

“He is at that level. This is not, ‘I’m going to slap you on the hand and sit you for two games’ — because I don’t want to read about him in a year, where it says, ‘Ex-Notre Dame player arrested for X-Y-Z.’ That will be a failing on my part if that happens.”

He will miss zero or 12 games. There is no in-between.

Michael Floyd is not some thug. He is a university kid who tips a few pints and who has discovered the hard way, he tends to lack judgement when he has had a few too many. He is paying his debt to society and if he he makes the requisite life changes he will be welcomed back. Kelly is not being too soft on him.

I seem to recall a coach named Rockne who had a player named Gipp who had a few "alcohol offenses" and most of us don't hold that against the coach nor the player.

You might be like that Wooly, but there is a large contingent of ND fans, many of them on this board (and to be honest, probably myself included), that would KILL other teams for letting Floyd 'off the hook'. It's absolutely true...go look at when other teams have off-the-field issues - the immediate joke is "Poor kid will have to site out the first series vs. Northwest Montana State." I'm guilty of it when it happens to FL kids (but they deserve it - Urban turned a blind eye plenty of times).

Now, as far as a one game suspension, we've already argued this point ad nauseum - I disagree with you that it's just a punishment to appease other teams' fanbases; He effed up and if the coach deems a one or two or 5 game suspension, then so be it. Don't drink and drive. But we don't need to go through that again (you can have the last word if you want to say a rebuttal; I won't rehash my argument) - I'm happy as hell that he's back for the whole season (provided he doesn't screw up). I get to go to one game this season, the opener, so hell yeah I'm happy!

Just one point to add to this argument... ND kicking kids out of school for slip ups that would've got a slap on the wrist at another school has been used against us as a negative recruiting tool for as long as I've been around ND athletics. Things like "Notre Dame says they're a family and they'll take care of you but look what they just did to [insert player here]."

While the ResLife rules haven't changed (and Floyd just had quite fortunate timing) the fact that Kelly is giving him a chance to redeem himself and pushing him to improve the person he is versus being "punitive" is, in my opinion, a huge step in the right direction. I don't ever want ND to be an Alabama or Florida; but I also don't want us to be a BYU. There is a happy medium and I, personally, think Kelly has found it.

For those wondering why the culture at ND has changed; It hasn't.

A few names for reference in dealing with trife, as young kids make mistakes: Ralph Guglielmi, Joe Heap, Nick Eddy, Al Hunter, Willie Fry, Luther Bradley, Ross Browner, Tony Brooks, Michael Stonebreaker, and Julius Jones to name a few.

No Access

Haters gonna hate. Administration at ND owes you nothing. The people who make decisions at ND owe haters even less.

Haters gonna hate.

The clock fast approaches a new day in Notre Dame lore. It's time we wake the echoes...

Considering kelly's father was a politician so I believe this policy concerning floyd is the politician in him coming out. As others have said, a one or two game suspension doesn't make much sense but also when you think about it, kelly really wants michael to play and I believe he has all intentions of michael playing. Therefore, he makes the curcumstances all or nothing so that people won't criticize him when he allows mike to play all the games since he can say that mike met all the criteria. I am not trying to say that kelly is a savy, scheming politician as I am sure he does have intentions of not allowing mike to play if he doesn't show any sign of improvement.

I wouldn't call it a "large contingent", I like to call them the "Get off my lawn!" contingent. It's fine if you fall into that contingent, but what this group has never been been to explain to me is what a game, or five accomplishes? I always get the same "because what he did was wrong", "Just Because" or the the doozy of "What will the neighbors think?". None of these are good reason to punish Michael's teammates for his mistake.

I believe that punishment, by nature, needs to involve not only retribution but the person should also learn from it. Punishment for punishment sake is worthless to everyone. Michael is earning his retribution through community service, alcohal abuse classes and the sessions with people who have been hurt by drinking and driving. These aren't arbitrary duties. They are painful and time consuming. He is proactively making changes and trying to learn from the mistake.

Then there is the arbitrary game(s) suspension. He doesn't learn anything from that in which he didn't learn from all of the other things he is currently doing. He isn't being "let off the hook", he is actually doing more than 90% of the people who find themselves in the same situation. So missing game(s), especially at the beginning of the year, is not a punishment for Floyd. It is simply punishing the team for Michael's mistake. He will still finish the year the statistical leader in almost or all recieving categories. He will still be drafted. He will still become a millionare.

So what do you want? Do you want to put on the facade that we are "tough" on our players by making Michael sit? If we lost that game and we missed the national championship game because of it, who did you really punish? Not Michael, he will be a graduate and NFL football player. But you will be able to feel good about yourself and the rest of the team can take Michael's punishment for him.

I have and will never dog another team for dealing with a student athlete in the way that Notre Dame is handling Michael. If a student is not learning his lesson and not doing anything to improve himself and learn from the situation, then I would have a problem with that. The "Get off my lawn" contingent do not want Michael punished for Michael's well being, they want him punished so they dont have to explain these concepts to people who question it. Frankly, you guys care far too much about what others think of Notre Dame instead of simply wanting the University to do right by Michael and his future.
