This is a nice pick-up. I can't say that I understand why he has so few offers...but the kid looks like a gamer. He should be able to contribute to special teams and who knows beyond that? He certainly looks better than your normal walk-on and he turned down free rides at Cincinnati and Air Force to come to Notre Dame, so that can't be bad.

Can we please not create unrealistic expectations for this kid?

Did I miss the posts about him winning two Hiesman's? A Butkus? A Consensus All-American? A 4 Year Starter?

I did read, "if he's half as as good as Mike Anello" - also a walk-on who was not a very good DB but excelled in his role on Special Teams. Somebody noted he probably wouldn't see the field for three years. Somebody else noted he would learn under Te'o. He didn't say he would be Te'o.

The majority of posters seem to see this kid as being a contributor during his time at ND and being an asset to the team and the University.

He went to one of the most prominent high schools in the country and had two four stars as teamates. Every coach in the country has seen him on tape, and they didn't see fit to offer him a scholarship.

He did go to a prominent program with two hot shot skill players, Wittek and Blackwell, yet Schmidt was the captain of that team and was the TEAM Player of The Week - 3 Times. Did you watch his video or are you just reacting to your interpetation of posts in the thread?

"Every coach in the nation"? If we're suppposed to temper the enthusiasm shouldn't we also temper the hyperbole?

I don't know if every coach in the country has seen him on tape, particularly as he was on the other side of the ball from Wittek and Blackwell. And he was offered a scholarship from Air Force and Cincinnati. And he could get a free Ivy League edition from Penn which might come in handy.

The comments here are just setting grossly unreasonable expectations. If he contributes, that would be awesome, but we need to ramp things back to what's likely, rather than what's possible.

Somehow I can't conceive of Kelly, Holtz, or Weis saying to their players, "I want you to ramp your expectations to what's likely, rather that what's possible. Don't visualize breaking a tackle and taking it to the house, just visualize a 2 yard gain."

Ivory Covington made a $9 million tackle but NOT because he thought of what's likely to happen when a 170 pound CB takes on a 240 pound TE with a head of steam. He had a can do attitude and he executed "The Tackle!"

If David Ruffer played to people's expectations he'd still be kicking for Siegfried Hall. He never played high school ball. When he missed his first kick, a PAT, in '08 the fans wanted him sent back to Siegfried Hall. Similar remarks when 33 of his 35 kickoffs in '09 didn't reach the endzone. Fortunately he expanded our expectations of what's possible and he earned a scholarship doing it.

Play Like A Champion, Joe!

Fantastic! I'm glad that he's taking that step towards his football dream. Love it when someone such as Joe turns down a "free ride" to play elsewhere just to become part of the ND family ... that's another example of how special of a place Notre Dame truly is!

Sounds like yet another great young man joining the Irish family.

One of the best parts of being a Notre Dame fan is you get to root for good kids. There is no internal struggle or jeopardizing of morals that would result from having a team full of punks and felons like some of the other big-time football programs. That fact alone will make our impending run to the National Championship that much more enjoyable.

Welcome aboard, Joe!

We don't want him to take Nate's scholarship since we only have I believe around 17 available next year. We are going to need it. I say he gets a scholly in two years.

this is great... kid looks like a warrior on film. Will probably light some fires under his teammates in practice and in the weight room.

In 2 years dont we have our missionaries from last year coming back?
If this kid deserves a scholly, this year or next, the coaches will give him 1.
I love the way he covers the run, and rushes the passer, but I think I saw only 1 time where he defended a pass in his highlight tape. I would like to see this young man learn that part of the game and earn a scholly, then we can set him loose on the NCAA.

The kid may or may not work out. He looks to be a very solid player. The lack of interest from any big time schools is a concern. The thing I like is we took one from Mater Dei. U$C has owned the kids from there. It's a foot in the door. That is huge. Anytime a kid want to walk on, it says a lot about the kid. I am not betting against him.

All you can hope for from any walk on is controbution at best a small level...anything above that is an added bonus and I'm hoping for the same in this situation.

Hope he does well and the decision proves to be the right one.

Lets move the boy up with the other guys. Think its well deserved, even without a Scholly.

I would seriously be surprised if he doesn't earn a scholly by his junior year

I'de be surprised if he didn't earn one by his sophmore year. I think this kid is WAAYYY underrated. The moment he makes the three deep at ILB, he will be on scholly. This isn't going off of any inside info or facts, just my gut.

Any word on how Joe has looked? I don't recall seeing him on any of recent practice videos. He is a very intriguing player.

It's a shame that no one ever moved his thread into the top section. tsk tsk tsk...

He's got some growing to do in terms of muscle mass in order to be a factor at ILB. He's going to need a few years according to II.

Definitely talented
