Where is it mentioned that he's definitely coming in at OLB and not RB?

Just heard his interview with Scout directly following his press conference. He said he def felt the Irish Coaches were looking at him on the Defensive side of the ball.

Another bit of Info from the Scout show that just wrapped up, they said his Running back "tape" is good, but his Edge Rushing, OLB tape is special. They added that he could play multiple spots at the next level, but he has the tools to be very special at OLB.

Right now his top five are Syracuse, Mississippi State, Tennesee, Notre Dame and Michigan State in that order. From Rivals

Johnny dont want to fight with you again.

You win. ;)

Did we fight?

You and I have conflicting data points is all my man. My stuff comes from Blue and Gold, 247 sports.

You're a Rivals guy.

I got $100000 vBucks, he's Irish. Care to a make friendly wager?

I think we can move on from this. I hope he is Irish though.

He is Irish. Good call on not making that bet son... ;)

Where does Perkins end up on our depth chart in 2012?

I'm guessing Shembo moves back to Cat after Fleming graduates, and Perkins competes with Spond and Councell at Dog.

So much for Kelly's preference for height and range on the edges; they're apparently willing to compromise their position profiles when it comes to versatile athletes. Flexibility is valuable.

Thank you for the most excellent birthday gift David! Welcome to the Irish family!

Happy birthday my brotha!

What a great birthday present!

I hope I get one as good as yours.

I'm thinking DGB. (or is it DBG?) Or Treggs. Maybe Mauk. I dunno. ;)

I see your point but Perkins is 6'2" which of course still isn't as big as some of our others guys of course but I wouldn't say the staff is compromising because at 6'2" he definetly isn't small

I fully plan on having DBG and Gunner Kiel float down from the heavens on my birthday. Locked hand in hand, we will together hand Kelly our Letters of Intent.

Kelly will then cut me, but it will still be a radical day.

Perk is gonna be a beast for us. I really think this kid has all of the tools to be a real special player at Notre Dame. Cant wait to see ya suit up, kid!

We heard a lot last year about how Ishaq Williams and Ben Councell are the prototypes for Cat and Dog OLBs respectively, mainly due to their combination of height, range, and speed. We also heard a lot about how Kelly's staff has a physical profile for each position that heavily influences who they offer in the first place (see: Joe Bolden).

Then you have LBs like Shembo, Rabasa, and now Perkins, none of which are particularly tall and rangy, but they're such versatile athletes that the staff apparently feels their flexibility justifies breaking from the physical profile for OLB.

My earlier comments were not a knock on Perkins. I'm merely trying to figure out how Kelly recruits, and it appears that flexibility trumps his ideal physical profile; at least at OLB.

I feel like we are seeing Kelly's true recruiting strategy emerging.

(1) Recruit true profile position guys pased on their ability to fit into the 3-4 or spread.
(2) Fill out the rest of the roster with excellent athletes from the skill, big skill, and power categories.

Perkins is not a position guy, he is an athlete. This guy is a powerful "skill" guy who was likely recruited because he is athletic enough to provide depth at RB, OLB, and even SS.

I agree that DOG looks like the best fit, all things being equal, because he is such a good pass rusher. But I don't really think we are recruiting him that specifically. He is more in the Collinsworth/Farley/Prosise mold.

Plus, we should always have a place for the best 1 or 2 from Indiana.

Great pick-up!

I'm imagining something like this, except with Kiel/ DGB instead of Maude.

David Perkins Verbal Commitment Live 06/07 by College Insiders | Blog Talk Radio

Here's the broadcast starting over at the begining.

If you're interested, I give a shout out to IE at the 40:40 mark.

I'm really interested in scout now. They nailed it. I think I'm about to be premium to two services now.

And guess who follows you?

That's right. Johnny fu@k the premium services, we can start our own show!

You were right about DP picking ND, and I will be right about DP playing a hybrid SS position that allows him to come up and lets the fury of all hell's hounds loose on him!

That wasn't a pleasant picture. Thanks, I fixed it . . . Or I could do as some politicians and say, no, I meant it just as I said it, we should throw dog's vaginas at 'em!

lol.

I don't smoke buddy. I chewed for 10 years. Tough habit to kick.

Now I eat too much. I can't prove it, but it has to do something with missing the tobacco.

I gained 20 freakin' pounds after I quit. It's still with me.

I think so. I know that CATs are the pure rushers, but CATs also play with their hands down on the line a lot-- they rushy more like a WDE. Size wise, he is more SS/OLB (Harrison Smith) then WDE/OLB (Ishaq Williams) to me, so unless the kid puts on 45 lbs., I don't see him being a true CAT.

Supposedly, the DOG is going to be blitzing a lot more this year anyway, now that Spond and Shembo are over there.

Welcome David! Lax owes me some vbucks for saying I was a jinx. ;)

Is it possible that if we get two RBs he will start out at OLB but if we whiff on the big name RBs that he will start out at RB? Seems like we are just classifying him as an athlete/ OLB so as to not scare away some of the big RB fish in the pond.

It doesn't strike me as a ploy. Apparently his RB tape is merely "good", while his OLB tape is "special". It looks like the staff genuinely wants to bring him in for his abilities as an edge rusher, but his versatility certainly won't go unnoticed.

GAIII was legitimately recruited for WR, but now plays RB. I have no doubt Perkins could go the same way.
