That is definitely an unsubstantiated rumor! I personally coached the kid last year and he is a good kid. If anything there may have been concerns about his grades at least with ND's measuring stick.

Maybe that was it. I just had it from good authority that there were concerns. I will obviously defer to you since you know him personally. Sometimes people unfairly equate a poor GPA or grade concerns with character issues. My apologies then for the apparent confusion.

Back to his recruitment - he favors Syracuse. They offered him at RB and he is close with former NFL RB and Syracuse coach Tyrone Wheatley.

any chance if any concerns get worked out we'd offer him at MLB?? Lugibihl loved the kid and said he's a must in a front 7

If it's grades (or core courses) and he improves he could get an offer but I didn't think ND was targeting MLBs this year.

If you read DABLKIrishman's post http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2012-recruiting-profiles/56126-12-ath-david-perkins.html#post491373 Perkins is "a liability in pass coverage". I read that as Calabrese without a compass, "lost in space". As a coach the DABLKIrishman should have seen a lot more of him than Luginbill has.

Maybe he'll develop this Fall. Lots of time.

i dont understand how highschool LB, with 4.43 speed, "is liability in pass coverage" against hs rb.

Just because a player has good speed doesn't mean that they are gonna be good in pass coverage. It has a lot to do with footwork, awareness and taking the proper angles on your drops especially at linebacker which is were he really struggled. Most linebackers are a lot better against the run than the pass at the high school level. There is always room for improvement and its just one flaw in his game compared to a lot of positives.

from Perkins facebook yesterday - "I was 1 handshake from committing to Syracuse last week so looking at my offer list you'll kno size of school doesn't appeal to me its all about what you have to offer me an our relationship."

If Notre Dame offers him, is there anyway he could play RB for ND?

From the OSU Camp:

Four-star David Perkins was another tremendously athletic edge rusher in attendance though at 6-2, 215 pounds, outside linebacker may be in his future. Perkins is a cut, physically impressive prospect that may be a good fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker due to his comfort level rushing the passer.

I think it obviously means that recruits read our threads a lot more than anyone would think. :p

I take that to mean ND is probably showing a lot of interest in him and is just waiting for some things to shake out... or maybe for him to camp... who knows?

Clearly has the athletic ability to play at a number of positions and I hope he ends up Irish.

Maybe its about SAT/ACT or needing to take a certain class or two before he can get offered. Kids a potential stud from our backyard, we should lock him up.

Speaking of, what about Dieter? But I should leave that to his thread.

As for Perkins, are we wanting him at RB?

Dieter will get an offer if there are some extra roster spots open or if we whiff on all the other "more talented" receivers offered.
Heck he may earn one camping this summer.

I am pretty sure that Perkins would be in at running back for the Irish.

Can we get his rankings updated?

We need one of the potential 3 RBs to be a power back, Perkins definitely fits that mold.

I think he's being recruited as a power back.

He can run in the 4.4s can't he? That's a fast power back. Of course, power = speed + strength.

I think we get him. Really glad too. Can never have too many large-fast kids.

Also, I know he doesn't have to prototypical build, but I could totally see him playing SS or a variety of LB positions. I'm probably wrong, but I just love his natural athletic ability.

STAY HOME AND COME TO ND DAVID!
