I'm not going to pretend and say that I think Mauk is as good of a prospect as Kiel, but Mauk committing and Kiel looking elsewhere would be far from the worst thing in the world. It would stink to see Mauk go off to Mizzou or Cincy and then get CJ Leak'd by Kiel on National Signing Day (if he decides to wait that long). One top five quarterback prospect is surely better than none!

My preferred scenario would be to wait it out for Kiel. If he did choose someone else on NSD, worst case scenario is that we end up with a kid like Morin, who has a tremendous skill set. Morin would also spurn any team to play for Notre Dame, so we know we always have that chip to play. Kiel is the only QB out of the three in my eyes that has a high probability to become an impact player at Notre Dame, so it doesn't make sense to me to risk turning him off by going after someone else just as hard.

By National Signing Day, Mauk will not be a top 5 ranked QB... mark it...

**mods - you can delete or move my post to the Mauk vs Kiel thread if it is seems like it is going to hurt this thread. Apologies in advance.

I don't care where either QB is ranked as long as BK thinks he can win championships with them.

Scout's rankings for quarterbacks are generally crap, for the lack of a better word... if you can throw a ball with consistency, then they'll slap the five star label on you. Since 2002, Rivals has had 25 or so five star quarterbacks as compared to Scout with about 40 or 45.

I usually lean towards Rivals as being the more accurate site for quarterback rankings, but that's just my opinion. From the tape I watch, I see Winston as being better than Miller and Gardner (although Gardner's potential is through the roof) and Pike clearly has more physical ability than Heaps. He and Driskel are probably a wash.

Kiel is a step above all of them.

Article that talks about the Rivals vs Scout system: Rivals 100: Breaking Down Five-Star Quarterbacks Since 2002 | Bleacher Report

I knew the "Scout gives more 5 star rankings out than anyone" argument was going to be made, and it's valid. I agree with that they are too liberal. Doesn't take away that 2 services have guys ranked higher than Winston and Pike from 2010 and 2011. (I haven't seen Rivals top 100 yet, so I can't compare how Rivals compares the QBs.) I was only responding to your assertion that:

1) those guys are better than anyone in those 2 years, which I think is completely false, and 2 services agree (while I'm presuming Rivals agrees with you). Regardless, far from clear, that's for sure. And like I said, Heaps is already starting and had offers from all over the country, ND included.

2) This class is the bounce-back year of QBs, when both those services (who are consistent in their rankings year-to-year, so if they overly rank QBs one year, then they do it every year), have the same amount of 5 star QBs or even less 5 star QBs this year than they did in the past.

As for Pike and Kelly - don't forget, Kelly saw Pike up close at camp last year at ND and chose not to offer. Pike went to ND on his own dome, so it's not like Kelly was thinking that there was no way Pike would consider ND. He saw Pike throw and run and all that, and just decided for whatever reason (system, attitude, fit, etc) not to offer. We'll probably never know why.

Word on their boards is that Kiel and Pike will both be five stars when Rivals releases their first rankings, which would put them above any quarterback in the last two years since they haven't ranked a high school quarterback in that elite category since the '09 class. Things change, though (I believe that Driskel was at one point a five star and ended up a four), so a conclusion can't really be made until next winter, but I'm just going by my opinion and not a star system as of right now.

But again, I really don't put any serious stock into Scout's ratings. If you do, then our opinions will clearly differ on this.

I don't think any QB will be a 5 star this year. Another below average class at the position IMO

This has been gone over. Most people (including the recruiting sites) disagree with you. Also, Kiel is a sure thing for 5 stars. As sure a thing as any 5* QB in the last 5 years (i'm not saying that he is the best qb in the last 5 years, just that he would have been a 5* in any of those classes).

Who is most? Rivals have already released their 5 stars and Kiel is not one. ESPN hasn't released their ratings yet. Who is left? Scout? You and I are 5 stars on Scout.

I heard Scout was handing out a coveted 6th * this year. 5 just wasn't enough.

They named like six guys who are the truly elite players of the class (DGB of course being one of them), but that doesn't mean there won't be more. The articles were titled "The First Five Stars" for a reason... there will be plenty more with that honor in the first rankings of the summer and several more players will earn that fifth star as the year goes on. This is how Rivals has always done it.

This.

Rivals usually finishes with about 25-30 five-stars.

24/7 has him as a five star as well. Maybe I am missing somthing, but when I look him up on Rivals, he hasn't been ranked yet.

Gunner Kiel - Yahoo! Sports

Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like Rivals hasn't done a complete ranking yet, just gave 5* status to four players. That by no means indicates anything one way or the other in my eyes. They always upgrade kids later in the process.

Regardless, almost every article you read about Kiel states "5 Star Gunner Kiel".

Finally, damn right we are 5* guys on Scouts... we gotz the mad skillz....

Rivals 250 lists 11 recruits with 5 Stars but several postions have no 5 Star recruits including QB with 21 selections.

TE, LB, and ATH don't have anyone with 5 Stars either so far. It may simply be they have ranked the QBs yet.

Saw a rumor on a Michigan board that he's going to verbal to Michigan this week. Obviously bull****, but I thought it was humorous enough to post.

I read a rumor on a UF board that Omar Hunter and Chris Martin are transferring to Notre Dame.

Actually wouldn't shock me. Said he wanted to stay close to home and focus on education. Michigan is closer to home than Oklahoma.

Omar Hunter sucks.. So does Trattou.. and Chris Martin.. and Anthony Barr.. and Justice Hayes..

Gunner Kiel is a stud no doubt.. I also really like Mauk's moxy. But we wont be thinking about them when Golson is wrecking defenses with the spread.

I really think that the signing of Golson will deter Keil from coming to ND... In the grand scheme of things, Keil probably has a better chance of going to the NFL than Golson since Keil is your prototypical 'NFL type QB'. But even if Keil has more pro-potential, it doesn't mean he'll be a better College QB than Golson. And because BK's spread, Keil might sit behind Golson until Golson graduates.

if hoke can reel in kiel that will be scary for recruiting in the future...this guy hasn't even coached a game and he's already starting to get some elite talent and if they get kiel too that will give them even more recruiting momentum going into the season.

I think our offense would be a lot more effective with Cyler Miles thanks to his 4.43 40. I certainly would take Kiel but id rather he go to a team we dont play every year then Michigan and take Miles after missing. Kiel is better suited for Michigan's offence to.

you're right kiel is the absolute perfect fit for michigan's offense and i'm sure their using that as a selling point...i'm not a 100% convinced though with Miles, reminds me an awful lot of Demetrious Jones and I don't need to remind how that turned out :(

To be fair to Demetrious Jones, he didn't get a fair shake at ND. Weis had already decided that he was going with Clausen as his QB and screwed DJ by starting him in the opener against GT as a sacrificial lamb. I am not making the arguement that DJ was going to be a star or that going with Clausen wasn't the right thing to do (I probably would have started Clausen as well that year) but we don't really know how Jones would have turned out if he was given a real chance.

that makes no sense to me, last I saw golson was a 3 to 4 (depending on the site) star qb and anywhere between 15 to 25 best qb in the nation coming out right? why would the #1 qb in this recruiting class be afraid of that sort of competition?

Golson could be perfect for this offense, but kiel is still a badass that EVERYONE wants. You have to use common sense here....

Anarin, do you remember the horror that was the 2007 GT game? It was a bloodbath for DJ and only for the reason that Weis didn't want to get Jimmy slaughtered in week one of his freshman year. Sacrificial lamb is exactly the correct term.

As far as Kiel goes, I've heard no news from my cousins in Columbus who are close with Gunner's brothers. He's been pretty quiet about ND lately, but they (cousins) did tell me that Stevie Brown (DB) and former Columbus East football player under Carr & RichRod for 1 year has spoken a bit to Gunner about how he enjoyed Michigan outside the football program. Stevie Brown was a genuine STUD at East and Gunner would have been in 7th or 8th grade at the time and kids worshiped him. Gunner certainly won't take Stevie's word as the be all-end all, but its another voice not working in our favor, for sure.

Where he couldn't beat out Tony Pike. Is that really that disgraceful? I am by no means saying that Demitrius Jones would have been good, but we never really got to find out either.
