Interesting and solid point. Or maybe they have been both humbled yet challenged enough to stick it out and eventually take charge. Certainly a good dilemma

Definately. They may be ultra competitive, and it makes for a good position battle, but it doesn't neccesarily mean the backup or backups will transfer. Heck, Massa was not only told he wasn't going to win a QB battle, he was told to change positions. All I am saying is that it is possible that kids can be both ultra competitive and team players at the same time.

yeah I hope all the QBs stay.. pretty good chance at least one moves on (possibly Hendrix) but I would feel very uncomfortable if two left.. even if we got a QB in this cycle, one of Rees/Hendrix/Golson would be the starter in 2012 with a true Frosh as the primary backup if two were to transfer.. Our current QB situation is very nice, but one or two unfortunate things could turn a position of strength for us into a huge cause for concern very quickly.. the more I think about it, a solid QB every cycle is very important..

I see what you are saying IronMan about these QBs being very competitive, and I can't speak on this very accurately, but it seems like players with the talent level of a Hendrix (4* out of HS) would not be satisfied with being a backup their entire career.. sure, there's a time to be a team guy (and I believe Hendrix is from every interview I've heard from him) but at the same time, these QBs love to PLAY football, not just be on the team.. there's a time to be a team guy, then there's a time to "get yours" which leads me to believe that at least one will want out for an opportunity to be "the guy" somewhere else simply because they love playing the game..

Mauk fits that bill we're looking for because I don't believe he's as "ready" to play right now as Kiel, and I'm pretty sure a QB this cycle wouldn't see the field until at least their red-shirt sophomore year, so someone who is willing to sit for 2-3 years is a very important factor

Hopefully all these guys value a Notre Dame du Lac degree and the experience enough to stick it out, even if they rarely see the field. Naive thought, but maybe.

Feeling relaxed. Sleepy.

Seems to me (I have no stats...) that ND record holders came from average teams. ND winning teams had individual more or less average numbers. Team game. Can these guys buy into the team concept?

From ESPN on his timetable:

One of 2012's top signal-callers, Zeke Pike, will be off the board on Wednesday, and another ESPNU 150 QB, Maty Mauk of Ohio, may not wait too long to follow.

Mauk texted Pete Scantlebury of PowerMizzou.com that he expected to make a decision in "the next month or so." There's been one change among his leaders since Mauk gave his top six to ESPN's Jamie Newberg last month: Mauk has dropped Vanderbilt (no surprise there) and is now working with a top five of Cincinnati, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Notre Dame.

The Irish are thought to be the favorite of both Mauk and fellow Watch List QB Gunner Kiel of Indiana, who may be the nation's top prospect at the position, so if Mauk wants to play for Brian Kelly, as his brother, Ben, did at Cincinnati, he might be smart to commit sooner rather than later.

Mauk said that he has no other visits scheduled, but that he would most likely make at least one more before his announcement.

This is consistent with other things I am hearing, that while nothing is imminent with him, after his spring visits are done we should see him commit somewhere in a couple weeks, most likely ND.

ESPN keeps mentioning we may lead for kiel but in actuality aren't we third behind bama and someone?

I like Mauk's stat line. I think we end up with Mauk and not Kiel. I keep hearing Mauk's stats are driven by the offense he is in. He is playing against inferior competition. The kid is playing in Ohio, at the 4A level. He has a chance to break the national all-time passing records. He's rated the #5 QB on Scout. I'll take him. Kiel is looking for early playing time. OU and Bama are telling him what he wants to hear. ND is telling him the truth. Unfortunately, we have 4 solid QB's with serious eligibility left. I don't see Kiel coming to ND.

+1

I couldn't agree more. I don't think Kiel comes here, and I think Mauk we have a better shot at Mauk.

a point that is being continuously emphasized throughout several threads. Truth of the matter is I think both QBs want to come to ND, but the thin depth charts at other schools compared to ND's crowded depth chart may force both of them to go elsewhere, with michigan being the likely destination for mauk if this is the case and kiel choosing between ou and bama.

Lifelong fan of ND or not....If I am a top flight QB I am passing on ND and its crowded QB situation...Simply stated!

Good point there. I know if I were in Kiel or Mauk's shoes I would be looking somewhere where I had a decent shot at playing time in year one or two. It would be awefully tough to crack the line-up with the talent we currently have on the roster. I can't say I would blame these kids at all if they end up elsewhere.

It says he is going to ND to defend their 7 on 7 championship.

They are going there or two reasons: the tournament and as a recruiting trip.

He said in the past he would like to make a decision by the end of June. (we will see)

ND-Michigan-Mizzou-Cincy Final 4.

I still think Missouri is the school to beat, but like we always say- get 'em on campus and we have a legit shot!

In this case, I hope you're wrong. We have plenty of QB depth at the moment, and I dont see this kid as a prospect who is going to come in and jump golson or hendrix in the depth chart in the next 3-4 years.

I'd rather use the schollie on another elite DB or WR, or heck maybe even a lesser heralded MLB or NT, two positions where immediate impact isnt needed, but a guy who developes as a backup over the next 2 years could have a significant role in 2013.

If he went to Michigan, I doubt he'd see the field.

Denard Robinson will start the next two years. After that, you have Devin Gardner, who could be at Michigan through 2014, and a 2013 commitment, Shane Morris, who may be the #1 QB in the 2013 class.

I don't get it... he has an offer, he seems a REAL nice fit for our system... who wouldn't want the kid???

I'd be happy if we landed him, only thing that makes me okay if he doesn't is our depth and the fact we don't NEED a qb this cycle.

I saw Maty two weekends ago at the Regional Track meet and I said to him "Go Notre Dame" he looked at me and smirked. He was pretty cool. I told him how I couldn't get my cousin (Doran Grant) to come to ND so I was trying to get him. He smiled and laughed. For a QB he ran a 22.5 200 meter dash and long jumped 21-11.50
