...groan...prepare for another media dust-up, regardless what it says. I only hope that this is brief. {I'm saying nothing here about ND properly treating this and the family seriously; the Sullivan family will be long earlier informed and counseled with}. This announcement/statement will just be a required public act by ND that none of us can have any effect upon, but will only serve to stir comments up again. With any luck this will be the last time.

My hope is that the university has done the right thing. Should the findings place ND at fault, I certainly expect them to "man up."

Declan's family definitely deserves answers to the many questions swirling around this tragic event. They deserve acceptable resolution, "closure" in today's terms.

The Indiana branch of OSHA has already issued findings and levied a $77,500 fine. I assume that there are other continuing investigations.

I have mixed feelings about this. As a student at ND I would have jumped at the chance to tape the football team's practice. I would have bristled at any dicta that curtailed my "art," no matter the risk.

In retrospect, I realize that a measured curb to my youthful enthusiasm and (false) sense of invincibility would have been valuable and prudent.

In the perspective of wags, bloggers, haters, et al., this is far from over; regardless of the findings of the internal investigation. It's an INTERNAL investigation after all, and couldn't POSSIBLY be in the least bit objective.

They will never get closure as long as people are still talking about this.

I wouldn't trust the Chicago Tribune's reporting if Jesus himself had a by line. Crooked and dirty Journalists they are.

Some ISD updates from Twitter and Brian Hamilton:

ND press release: Tragedy caused by extraordinary 53 mph burst of wind, staff's lack of knowledge of wind speeds

the lift that fell was structurally different & the height of the lift also played a role

report conclusion: "No one acted in disregard for safety" in Declan Sullivan death.

From report: 'Numerous decisions by many people -made in good faith that day & over course of several yrs- played role.'

Open letter from #NotreDame prez John Jenkins: "The university, then, is collectively responsible" for Declan Sullivan death.

Said in October that #NotreDame would find Declan Sullivan death everyone and no one's fault. What do I win?

Now we all know good and well for the chicago trib and the haters, this will never be good enough. It completely befuddles me the amount of people who think the University should pay through the nose to his family, and I'm not saying they shouldn't pay something, but if it were me who lost my child, I think I'd be insulted to have a number put on my child's life.

Now I hope people will just shut up. It seems that no one can get past their own hatred for ND, so they have to keep re-hashing it. At this point, it is only up to the Sullivans what path they take now. RIP Declan Sullivan.

Love Father Jenkins letter at the beginning. He is taking full responsibility as the President of the University and you have to admire that.

The most important point I believe was the lack of real time weather conditions. Their policy said they could operate the lifts in up to 35 mph winds so when they went out for practice the winds were below this speed. As practice began the wind picked up and the staff was not monitoring it at that time.

It's a sad situation and a combination of several factors that all came together at one moment. RIP Declan and I hope this brings closure once and for all.
