Does anyone know who has the possibility of being fifth year next year and what players will most likely be chosen?

It's going to be much tougher of a choice working with this list than last years.

Crist, Goodman, Cave, KLM, Cwynar and Hafis seem like sure bets.

The rest, well they'll have to prove themselves this season.

Doubtful. The only sure bets on that list are Cave, KLM and Cwynar. Crist is probable but a total wildcard because of injuries. Hafis and Goodman are entirely dependent on the year they have and what recruits we have coming in.

Wait really? You left off Mccarthy & Slaughter. Slaughter who is most likely going to be a starter. you left off those two safeties when we have no depth there? Also, you left Golic off the sure bets? Kid is the backup center and guard this year. You always need depth on the line.

Playing the purely speculative game:

Almost sure bets
Cave, KLM, Slaughter, Cwynar

Probable but something crazy could happen
Crist, Hafis

Everyone else is entirely dependent on the class we bring in and how they perform this year.

I can't see why you'd bring back Goodman unless he has an absolutely phenom year.

Sorry... I missed Slaughter.

And he definitely will be granted a 5th year, if he chooses to come back.

I am a long time reader but first time poster due to the fact I never really had any unique insight or information. However, I might have some information regarding this that others might not be aware of. Cwyner is graduating in May and is enrolled in the 1 year MBA program (as am I) which would conclude in May '12. If he is awarded a 5th year, he would have to get into another grad program as I understand, but I find this to be unlikely given he already has a grad degree at that point. I could be way off base, but i thought at least it might be valid to bring up.

Only at Notre Dame could you lose an athlete because he excelled academically.

Good for him. Tbone, would you know if it is possible to draw out the one year program to 2 years? I know several MBA programs around the nation that allow it to take into account the possibility of professionals working while going for their degree, but am not sure what ND's stance on it is. Thanks.

There are 3 MBA programs Notre Dame offers: 1 year, 2 year, and executive (for working professionals). I have no idea if it is possible to switch from a 1 year to 2 year track, but I don't think that is very likely because the summer session is a fast paced version of the 1st year of the two year program. Once the fall semester comes around the one and the 2nd year two year MBA candidates are in the same classes. I hope that helps.

Isn't Abromaitis in a similar situation? I recall the announcers discussing at some point he was in the one year MBA program this academic year.

If he is, he isn't listed on the One Year directory group on Facebook.

What i love about these threads is how quick people just quit on players.

How many people on here swore up and down this time last year that Harrison Smith was the worst player on our team.

This thread is way too premature

By the time we get halfway through the football season, we, and Kelly, will have a much clearer idea as to how many scholarships ND really has to work with. My guess is that players will have to look fairly indispensable to be retained in these fruitful recruiting times, however.

In that we have at least a few ideas [ex. Slaughter, KLM, and probably Cwynar if his academic situation is do-able; Crist, obviously, if he starts and doesn't do so greatly that he goes pro; --- there are a lot of other good players on that list, but in every case they would have to be proving their position to the staff, vs. the other good players that we already have at their spots --- this even would include Golic, and everyone here knows that I am a fanatic about O-Line depth --- same with Hafis on the D-Line].
