Just read an article that HBO is airing a special on shady recruiting practices over the last decade, and has interviews from 4 former Auburn players. The programs that get smeared during the special are Auburn, LSU, Ohio State, and Michigan State. One guy talks about how OSU, MSU, and LSU were more or less in a bidding war for him. Should be an interesting watch to say the least.

*I think the NCAA statute of limitations is around 4 years, and these stories are mostly from 03 and 04, but either way somebody is about to look bad.

I think he posted one would break about now, being a 5 or 6 on a scale of 1-10, and then a 10 would break in August. I could be wrong though.

This is awful so far. I'm hoping it gets better, because right now they are purporting the viewpoint of maybe 1% of total NCAA athletes as if it is some overwhelming feeling among athletes. That's simply not true in the slightest.

Hopefully this panel doesn't bull**** as much as that opening piece.

This did not live up to the hype.. Whitlock has no idea how to back up his opinions and Rich Rod actually seems like a decent guy.. Auburn is really the only school coming out muddy..

Although... as dumb as that sounds... it does bring up an interesting point about incentivizing academic progress... but I'm not sure how you could pull it off...

Maybe all Universities pay into a pot and depending on graduation rate they get money back out of the pot at the end of the year? Tie coaches salaries to graduation rate of players? Small compensation for athletes in good academic standing? I also wouldn't mind student athletes being given a cost of living allowance in their scholarships. In fact I think that is a really good idea.

At the end of the day I see two options:
1. The NCAA hires more people and actually gets strict on schools. I'm talking any 7on7 camp has to have a compliance official present, etc.
2. Let the free market take over. If boosters want to pay kids then so be it.

If the NCAA insists on being a paper tiger then it is eventually going to be overrun. Give Auburn and OSU death penalties and it'll clean up college athletics in a hurry.

According to what I heard on ESPN radio today, if they paid football players, then the Title IX rules would require that they pay EVERY student athlete (in EVERY sport) the same "wages". Gottlieb made a good point about how almost NO schools would be able to afford that.

That's not entirely true, as the law isn't clear. At least that is what the Ivy League commish on HBO said... and I'm assuming he knows his stuff.

I know a lawyer or even an AD can twist it anyway but this is the first line of Title IX

(a) Prohibition against discrimination; exceptions. No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance

I would take the "benefits of" as saying that everyone should require the same compensation.
