Is the Big East Overrated?

I know it is the 1st day or the tournament, but with the Big East losing to Morehead St. (great name) a 13 seed and possibility of Gonzaga a 11 seed is the Big East not as good as everyone thought.

Not the whole conference, but some teams may be. Gonzaga doesn't surprise me much, but Morehead St. is a shocker. Especially us just losing to Louville. I don't know anything at all about Morehead St. other than the fact that they 100% wanted it more than lou. today

Funny how Colin C. just went on & on this week about March Madness not being as mad as people make it out to be. This has been the madest first round i've seen in my life!

Morehead St. is a shocker to me because I thought Louisville had the kind of speed and guard play to dominate most teams. Looking at the box score, Siva and Knowles got completely outplayed by Proffitt and Hill for Morehead St. Proffitt and Hill shot a combined 8-12 from behind the arc.... that's pretty darn good.

St. Johns without DJ Kennedy simply did not have the inside presence to compete with Gonzaga. I still liked the Johnies but could totally see Gonzaga winning that game.

WVU, Cincy and UConn all looked very impressive. So no, I don't think the BE is overrated, especially considering Vandy from the SEC got dropped by Richmond (who is probably a #7 seed in terms of talent) and Kentucky needed a last second play to beat Princeton... and I considered Kentucky a #2 seed in terms of talent. Crazy things happen in the tourney.

It should also be noted that the ACC and Big Ten both had losing records on the day.

Louisville was up by 4 w? about 9 minutes left when Knowles turned his ankle and never returned. They still shouldn't have lost to Moorehead State, but Knowles leaving killed them. And like you said, St. John's was banged up, and Gonzaga was a pretty easy call there.

So no, I don't think you can call the BE overrated yet at all. They went 4-2 yesterday, and with a 3-2 day today will have 7 teams in the top 32. That's pretty damn good...

No. Big East teams tend to get screwed in March by the fact that the games are called tighter. I know a lot of people think this is why Pitt hasn't been able to breakthrough in the NCAA tourney. If you take out late game fouls to try and extend the game, the Big East teams yesterday had more fouls called on them in every game except for one.

Yes. Big East hasn't won a championship in 6 years. It's a great conference but it isn't the SEC of college basketball.

I dont think the big east is over rated, but the grind of playing in that conf takes its toll.

It's not that the Big East is overrated; it's that they performed the best of any other conference in the regular season...RPI, having the best win percentage against other conferences. The (11) teams we got in the tourney was warranted, they just didn't show up to play which makes them seem undeserving.

I like seeing these underdogs win even if it's against BE foes. It's making Colin Cow look soooooo dumb!!! Already a 12 & 8 seed in the sweet 16.

Hey our Irish are still in it & that's all that matters right now!!!!

GO IRISH!!!! Let's beat those Seaman'ols!!

The big east is just too big, and now with tcu joining, the conf will be like the eastern conf in the nba. (size wise)
This is the perfect reason for ND to join another conf, like the wcc, it is filled with religous schools and they would have a better chance come tourney time. (not wore down).

the big east is MILES ahead of everyone other conference... the thing is they rarely have a top team natioanlly, but overall from top to bottom they rarely have a bad team... and many, MANY very good teams... no other conference comes close in that regard even if other conferences have one or two teams that are better than the best of the big east...

here's the thing, if the SEC doesn't win the title next year and has a 500 record in their bowl games are they suddenly over rated??... it's a down year in a HORRIBLE championship deciding crap shoot for the conference...

it happens.

Big East hasn't won a championship in 6 years. They haven't had a team in a championship game in 6 years. The top of the Big Ten, ACC, and Big XII>>>>The top of the Big East. The only thing the Big East has going for it is that they get the East Coast media and they have the decent 6 through 11 teams.

Who is the East Coast Media you speak of?

Boston College is in the ACC as are teams for MD, PA, VA, GA, FL, and the Carolinas. And South Carolina's in the SEC so again who is the East Coast Media you speak of?

I hear the same crap in football season, at Heisman time, every March, whatever the sport and whatever the season whenever some SEC, Big 10, 12, etc fan doesn't like the ranking his team, his conference, or his favorite player gets. And people buy into the spin.

Okay? Big East is ESPN's favorite conference and gets the most media attention. Having teams in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, and Syracuse and UConn being close to ESPN will do that. Big East is overrated.

So ESPN is THE East Coast Media.

I thought "media" was plural.

well it looks like the Big Ten is also overrated then, if the tournament is the only measuring stick.

Purdue is getting beat by 19, by VCU, a team that many thought should not even be in the big dance

Big East is good. And Title12, do me a favor and remove that pic from your sig. My butt hurts every time I read your posts, and that creates anger after a while. :)

I think media, technically, fits the singular/plural categorical exclusion...

There are many deer in the field.

No, not in "the East Coast media" usage in this thread. Media is the plural of medium. It can be used as a collective noun when describing a group of reporting agencies but not when only one entity, ESPN, is involved.

Go Rams!

I will agree with 2012's mistake, as if he was referring to ESPN, he should have just said (typed) "ESPN."

-However-

Usage note
Media, like data, is the plural form of a word borrowed directly from Latin. The singular, medium, early developed the meaning “an intervening agency, means, or instrument” and was first applied to newspapers two centuries ago. In the 1920s media began to appear as a singular collective noun, sometimes with the plural medias. This singular use is now common in the fields of mass communication and advertising, but it is not frequently found outside them: The media is (or are ) not antibusiness.
Media | Define Media at Dictionary.com

"In the 2010's, we now use the term in a singular sense." -Johnnykillz, Irish Envy Jackass
