Article that I can't read on B&G got me thinking.
What Freshmen from this past year are we hoping can/will step it up in 2011?

Nix, Roberson, Lo Wood

I'd also love to see Kendall Moore and Danny Spond (if thats where the coaches like him) push Carlo, Daniel Smith push Jones and Goodman, and Welch get in the TE mix. I think with the returning starters we have for the O-line Lombard and Nichols will only be need for depth this year.

Lo Wood is definitely a must to step up. I think Kendall Moore will also push Carlo and McDonald for playing time at ILB.

Excluding the new class, we're pretty thin @ CB... I'm hoping Wood is as good as advertised.

Rees.

This team's future hangs on a bona fide starter at QB. Right now Tommy's the default starter based on Crist's injury and his HS familarity with the spread. Crist is the better athlete but I wasn't impressed with running of the spread (and he won't be a sophomore). I'm assuming Rees steps up and wins the job because he grew in the position and Longo grew his body and strength.

I wouldn't be disappointed if Hendrix leapfrogged Rees. Let the best field general win.

I love Collinsworth. Any chance of him playing on "D" or will he stay on offense?

Special teamer for life or MAYBE a safety if he develops more than expected. In my opinion, he will be a Mike Anello type for the next three years.

I expect Nix, Shembo, TJ Jones and Roberson to all have serious impacts. Bennett Jackson and Collinsworth we will see every game on special teams. Lo Wood, Welch, Kendall Moore, Kona and Danny Spond are all likely to see the field at some point whether due to injury or spelling a starter. Daniel Smith and the QBs are the wild cards. They may end up being every game starters or they may end up not seeing the field.

I got alot of respect for what Tommy Rees did this year. I know the coaching staff doesnt need to reminded, but Tommy should remind them that his resume has been updated. its includes wins against ranked opponents, road vicories at yankee stadium, and beating usc in the coliseum. not to mention a bowl victory. I think Tommy Rees has raised the bar at the QB position for next year.

If Dayne Crist had Tommy Rees' defense we probably would've gone 11-1. I don't think Tommy Rees raised any bars. What he did was awesome and commendable... but those victories were TEAM victories and he also single handedly lost a game against Tulsa and threw a ton of interceptions. On one hand, he's only a frosh and will get better. On the other hand, he is nowhere near a healthy a DC in terms of ability and people need to grasp that.

A lot of people are saying Hendrix for a guy that hasn't even stepped on the field yet

I too nominate Hendrix. I think people are saying him because the physical tools are there, and hopefully with a redshirt year under his belt he has a grasp of the offense and can come in and be an instant starter/star.

I will be happy with any of our guys at QB because that will mean that they all have the offense in their heads and Kelly has judged [and he is a magical judge of QBs and Receivers] that this guy is THE ONE to begin with---and we will roll.

But it is not only vague ideas about Andrew Hendrix' high school days and physical measureables that have people guessing that it might be him. Kelly has gone out of his way [he didn't have to say this] that Andrew Hendrix had the fastest release that he has ever coached, and one of the strongest arms.

He also said that circumstances [no Spring ball//Dayne's injury forcing Tommy in there//emergency coaching scramble to concentrate on one young QB to hold the team together] were what kept Hendrix [and Massa] from having a fair chance at playing, or even getting any reps this year.

Kelly also obviously thinks Hendrix COULD have played, as he moved him to the varsity squad when it was obvious that Dayne could no longer go. I will be first to admit that we have no on-field data to expect Henrix to win the QB job, but the speculations are based on more than just High School news.

Yes sir indeed!

A lot of people are saying Louis Nix here, why aren't people complaining "gee, a lot of praise for a guy who's never seen the field."

I'm not saying Nix won't make an impact next year, I think he will...but he came to camp way over weight and plays a physically demanding position. He's had some praise from the coaches, but it's been reserved.

On the flip side, Kelly has a QB friendly system and Hendrix has all the measureables to go a long with a ton of praise from the coaches. How much longer are we going to listen to people be so shocked that others think he might see the field next year??

Rees threw 3 INTs in his first start as a true freshman. That's not all that uncommon a result. But to say that he single handedly lost the game is just not true. He also threw 4 TDs in that game, and Brian Kelly lost that game for the team.

I'm not trying to build a case that Rees is a better QB than Crist, but I am saying that the team played better with Rees. Maybe that was just a byproduct of Kelly "dumbing down" the offense to accomodate a true Freshman QB. Or maybe it was because Rees is better suited for Kelly's offense, despite Crist's better "traditional QB" skills. Either way....... I'll take the wins.

Tulane's freshman QB Ryan Griffin threw for 412 yards and only 1 pick against Tulsa.

Food for thought....
