Kirk Herbstreit just compared out defense to a high school D...saying we have no speed. He outright called the D SLOW!. He is usually spot on with his analysis, so here is the question...is the ND Defense really that slow?

No, not that slow. Stanford has made many of defenses look slow this year. 35-0 over UCLA, that just got done beating Texas. Herbstreit is an idiot... He is normally all up on Texas, too. Thats funny.

Brief synopsis:

UCLA beat Texas, 34-12
Stanford whipped UCLA, 35-0
Stanford over Wake Forest, 68-24
We lost decisively to Stanford, but not 35-0. Final 37-14

That's my perspective.

We will beat BC at Alumni Stadium tonight. Write that down. I put that.

That "high school defense" forced 2 turnovers against a top QB. If anything, our offense was what kept us out of that game even though we did get torn up overall

If ND has a high school defense, I suppose Michigan and Michigan St. do as well considering how those games turned out.

i would say no. one example is when D. Robinson went on that long run if their was 10 more yards Walls would have caught him, because he was closing in fast, maybe i'm reaching but that's what i seen

In Luck's defense, both of those interceptions were poor misplays by Stanford WR's. Both passes were on target. Kind of like most of Jimmy's INT's last year...

Well I don't remember one INT clearly, but one was an awesome play by Blanton that was then intercepted on the deflection. That is not the WRs fault... that was the defense making a play.

Deflection off of a Stanford WRs hands I thought... (x 2 if I recall correctly)

Update 1034 hrs MDT:

I just watched the deflection. In fact, it was a great defensive play. A legitimate interception created by a ND player. That was the first pick. Stand-by for the next

Update 1035 hrs MDT:

In fact, the second pick was also an extremely athletic tip to another defensive ND player. I recall my previous perspective in full; I admit my wrong. Luck legitimately turned the ball over.

I'm happy to admit WE earned those INT's off of a great passer. That being said, the passes weren't incredibly poorly passed footballs. Our vertical leaps created the plays...

Luck's 1 TD pass was a joke too. I want Brian Smith to be good so badly, but he was terrible on that play. 3rd and 10 and he completely was playing the slant for whatever reason with the full on blitz coming. Just was awful D.

For what it's worth, I actually don't think that should have been a touchdown. I was at the game sitting in that corner of the endzone...I could have sworn that the tip of the football hit the ground as the stanford player went to the ground. Thing is, I don't think any ref or TV camera would have seen it as the guy's body shielded the play from pretty much every angle but the one I had.

That all being said, I completely agree with you on Brian Smith. I want him to do well, I like his attitude, but...pass coverage...not good. I actually kind of blame that one on the coaches too, you've got to know what your players can do and Smith...well, pass coverage. Not his strength.

Regardless, it was an exaggeration. We are better than that. Elite? No. New coach, new system, depleted secondary. We show moments of brilliance and then moments of a bunch of guys learning a new system, coach and mindset. We are short a few good players, but overall we are on the right track. Normally, Herbie talks pretty highly of us. I think maybe he was balancing out Desmond and Corso because they picked ND to win today.

this is still a reflection of ND's current players though... they've been beat up in the press for years now... show some damn pride... your star averages are still better than just about every D you face and you can't shut ANY ofthe haters up, in fact it's getting worse and worse...

unreal that so few on that side ever man the hell up and play some quality ball.

I completely agree. He just makes too many mistakes on big plays. And I don't see him getting better.

We have some really good quality even special players on our defense. We have stuggled this year so far, but I for one am very optimistic about the next year or two. We have alot of talented defensive players on their way to South Bend come next fall. I think then we will have more depth at alot of positions that we are lacking now. I think this will be a huge difference for us. When our defense is on the field for 35 plus minutes a game, we need some quality guys to keep the defensive legs fresh so to speak. We are just too thin at some positions right now and I think at times that has hurt us. I definently dont think we have a High School quality defense, but I admit at times we really execute poorly on a few occasions and give up the big play that has killed us.

With the exception of our corners, our defense is average speed at best. Herbstreit is correct about that. But his "highschool" remark was out-of-line. That sure as hell isn't true. Maybe he got sloppy-mouthed in the heat of the commentary, or maybe he's been told to be more "newsworthy". Anyway, disappointing for a normally good analyst.

I was mad when I heard him say this.

But, you know, it's Notre Dame's job to prove him wrong. They've been right about us for 3-4 years now. I'm beginning to think that we're biased, not them.

I know this is a stretch. But does anyone think that Herbie was actually trying to motivate the ND Defense? It seemed very uncharacteristic of him to call out a team that drastically. And he has normally sided with ND in the past. Just my opinion, but it seemed like he was exaggerating just a bit.

He's just calling it like it is. Yes, he over-exaggerated, but we haven't stopped anyone. Our containment is lacking, which the new D philosopy was supposed to help.
We've played some stiff competition to-date though.
I don't think there are many teams that could have done much better against said competition.

Today we change the perception....

Amen.

I hope we can get some momentum going this week, so when I go to SB next weekend they're not in the tank.

Haven't been to a game in two years and I'm pumped! Also going to Muse on Tuesday night in Minneapolis!

Nice hyperbole by Herbert. No I dont think we have a high scholl defense. Actually our defense hasnt been that bad. Another gasbag trying to stir the pot is what this amounts to.

herbie doesn't use hyperboyle... he absolutely meant that he thinks that the D is that bad.

Then he is an even bigger fool. To think any D1 program has a high school defense makes him sound like the corner drunken idiot at the local watering hole.

Lol Herbie. What a jackass

We didn't get beat down like this. I guess that makes Oregon's defense a middle-school one or along those lines

I think defensive speed is a little overrated. If guys are not in the right place, can't wrap up tackles, and can't shed a block, speed doesn't really matter.
