Report: Rettig To Start At QB For BC
Written by Christian McCollum Wednesday, 29 September 2010 10:16

That was fast.

The competition between Boston College sophomore Mike Marscovetra and freshman Chase Rettig to replace former starter Dave Shinskie at quarterback against Notre Dame Saturday night lasted barely a day.

On Tuesday night, The Boston Globe reported that Rettig will be officially named the starter on Wednesday.

“Chase is going to start and Mike and Dave will battle for No. 2,“' one team source told the Globe. “Chase took about 80 percent of the snaps (with the first team) in practice Tuesday.”

The Globe article continues:

“The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Rettig enrolled at BC last January after passing up overtures from Tennessee, UCLA, USC, Arizona and Arizona State. Rettig, who lives in San Clemente, Calif. was regarded as the BC QB of the future when he came East last winter.

Spaziani and offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill had hoped to bring him along at a slow and steady pace, which meant redshirting this season and then competing for the job next spring and summer.

But when neither Shinskie nor Marscovetra, both who played last season as true freshman, made enough progress embracing the BC offensive scheme during the first three games of the season, Spaziani had to make a key decision: waste Rettig's redshirt season and give him some on the job training, while trying to compete in the ACC this season or simply muddle through the season, hoping that Shinskie or Marscovetra made some dramatic improvement.”

BC’s first three games of the season apparently helped Spaziani to the decision that it is time to go to the rookie.

I'm feeling very good about this game. I can't think of the last time our D has won a game for us, this could be their time to step up. Would be a huge confidence boost for the team.

This is definently a game that our Defense has a chance to shine. I'm excited about this Saturday, and really hope our D brings their A game because this could boost alot of confidence with them.

So whats gonna be the excuses when we lose to Boston College AND a freshman quarterback? This kid will most likely have a career day against us. Most everyone does it seems.

This kid sounds like a stud. I hope he is as green as you guys are saying. We better get some pressure on this kid.

Fishing any these days?

Trout season is done here. The last saturday in September. I'm strickltly a trout man myself and thats all I fish for. so when the season is over then I'm done too. :(

I did get to do a lot of flyfishing this year though so I'm good. Now its off to some fly tying in the offseason. You?

I had a new baby this spring so my spring/summer fishing was limited. But I'm looking to do some winter fly fishing in Sun Valley at some point.

Very astute. This is his first career start. So I guess he will have a career day.

Pah. We load the box and we kick their ***, IMO. Darrin Walls is improving, Robert Blanton was studly last week against a far superior team, and of course Gary Gray is a total stud.

Recent history has shown that the freshman QB seems to do very well against us. I'm not to sure that it was also their first career start, but we need to treat this game like our lives depended on it. Our season definitely does! We need to hit this kid hard early and get in his head, just like Stanford did to Crist. I see the D playing well and we win this one with a little comfort. Then we go into Pitt week with the it meaning something. Go Irish!

ESPN seems to be the only people high on this guy.

Rvials had him ranked the #21 QB and a three star. Scout had him ranked #45 and a three star. If he was some all-world talent and a true freshman... I might be a little scared of the unknown. But as is there is nothing about someone starting their first game as a true freshman that makes me think he is going to magically make their offense potent.

I think Rettig struggles like most freshman quarterbacks, and our defense is a little upset with the way things have gone lately and I see them out for blood. I think we win this game, and we have a strong defensive performance. We need to stop their running game or keep it neutralized and then pressure the heck out of this kid so he makes mistakes we can take advantage of.

I think that he will struggle, but I can't resist saying "Look at the last two freshmen quarterbacks who started against us..."

I agree with you. Another advantage for the freshman QB is that it's a home game for him.

The advantage that ND gets from BC starting a freshman QB will be very small, if the D-Line doesn't win the battle against BC's O-Line. Unfortunately, I don't have a ton of hope for that happening. I'd still rather face a true freshman in his first start, but I would place more emphasis on it, if our D-Line had shown the ability to put pressure on a QB.

Come on... really?

A small advantage from a freshman qb in his first start?
