When we don't play them??? Could be an interseting thread...

I just had this thought watching the UM game... I root for UM A LOT when they don't play us... obviously the region you live in prob. plays into it but are there any rivals of ours you respect to the point of wanting to see them do well outside of playing us??? I guess the quesiton should be is there anyone on this list you don't HATE to the level that you can pull for them from time to time...?

USC
Navy
Pitt
Stanford
BC
Michigan
Michigan State
Purdue
so on...

obviously, I suspect everyone would mention a respect for Navy to the point of rooting for them here and there and such...

personally, as much as a may get blasted for this, I find myself rooting for Michigan a lot when they don't play us, I hate Penn St. and tOSU TONS more than Michigan and would much rather see them 'up there' than either of the other two and let's face it... it's a very respectable state school.

Hard to root against Stanford from week to week also...

each of the others... I find it hard to root for even when it would benefit ND in the long run... I could never pull for SC... hate Pitt... MSU is just annoying... so on...

Just took a break from writing a paper to watch the Michigan-UMass game and was thinking about this very question myself. I'm taking the LSAT in October and will be applying to schools soon thereafter. My list of potential schools include Michigan, USC, and Boston College. Yikes.

I only root for Navy... and I also pull for Stanford if you count them as a rival.

Absolutely no one else gets my support. I hate everything about USC (they are the only team I root for injuries on)... UM, MSU and BC are the kinds of teams that I don't mind seeing them win games but would wholeheartedly root against them if they were a title contender... Purdue fans (especially the engineers I work with) are just too obnoxious with the giant chip on their respective shoulders that they compel me to root against them every week... Pitt I wouldn't root against but I hate Steelers fans so much that somehow that hate gets transferred onto the Panthers.

My thoughts... I could work at UM, I could work at Stanford (politics aside, I might be able to do that)... I could work at BC...

I would turn down a job at USC even if it were a road to easy street type job... the hate is that real... lol

I would not say that I root for any of our rivals, but at the same time I don't want our rivals having horrible seasons either. My reasoning is that when we beat our rivals when they are pretty decent, our victory seems more sweet. When we do get beat by one of our rivals, it can be said that we lost to a better football team. This is just my opinion. But I don't root for any of our rivals.

USC: Nope
Navy: Yes
Pitt: don't care
Stanford: sure, in basketball
BC: No
Michigan: Yes, vs Ohio St
Michigan State: See above
Purdue: If they were good, I would hate them.

Overall though, I do like the teams we play against to do well. I just...don't root for them.

I root for every one of them except USC [which I consider an extremely contaminated program]. I root for two reasons: 1). I root for them all for "pragmatic" reasons---the more they shine record-wise , the more our victory over them shines [and even our loss doesn't hurt us as much---playing what the pundits regard as "the toughest schedule in the nation" has always played to our public reputation and benefit---to do that those guys have to win]. 2). there are a few of those teams that I root for just because I believe that the schools are generally good schools. I'll not mention which to avoid a hail of invective, but there are some in that category.

Living in Indiana, I can honestly say that the only reason I get extremely amped for the Purdue game is so that all of the Purdue fans that come out of the woodwork in July & August can go back into their burrows until basketball season after we beat them.

That's the sole reason I pull for our rivals. But it still causes internal conflict at the same time.

Only way I root for them is if I have some coin on the specific team.

I am happy when our opponents win their other games, just for strength of schedule reasons. But, I don't root for them. And, I get extreme pleasure when USC, Michigan, and MSU lose...especially if it is to an unranked (or possibly D-II team). The others I couldn't care less about.

Being from the Boston area, I've been a fan of B.C. for a while and it's hard to pick between the two. I'll usually pull for who ever has the chance of having shot at #1 which of course is usually ND.

I now believe it is solely my fault we lost last night. I put a few ducketts on USC to cover (-12.5) over Minnesota. 18 point lead with under 2 minutes, USC is running out the clock. Fumble...garbage TD...loss.

Karma. My bad.

USC: Hah.... That'd be like rooting for you and your family contracting AIDS.
Navy: I respect Navy. I'll never root for them. By far the dirtiest players on the planet.
Pitt: Yinz don't have a prayer in this household. I freaking hate all that is Pittsburgh
Stanford: I respect Harbaugh and the program, but let's not go overboard here.
BC: They're called Fredo for a reason. Little brother is little brother for a reason. They suck.
Michigan: I root for Michigan one day a year. Go Blue. Beat the pizz out of the Suckeyes!
Michigan State: Never will it happen after John L and his flag planting.
Purdue: Who??? They were more entertaining under Wilford Brimley...Errr, I mean Joe Tiller.

I agree 100% it makes no since to want the teams we play to suck because if they do it's worthless to us on a national perspective when we beat them, an as you say losing looks that much worse.
