We could definitely use some play makers on offense to close this class out. but everyone knows that you have to have a stand out D to win National Championships and that's what we're building here.

Need a stud receiver yet, so HOPEFULLY, Daniels will get the score he needs to join the fray!

I gotta feeling, O I do................I do.......................I do...........Daniels is going to be Irish.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Be true!

If you are right, DaVaris will be another huge piece to the offense to go with the already studly defense.

Wayne Lyons is also a huge prospect for an even more amazing defensive class.

We all did the numbers crunch this summer to figure out how close we were and or how many recruits we could take to get to 85...quick recap

Currently:
5 5th yrs (gallup, burger, wenger, stewart, walls)
15 seniors...9 with 5th yr eligibility (ragone, nuss, dever, romine, nwanko, paskorz, gray, h smith, walker)
23 juniors with the addition of Montana
16 sophs by the subtraction of evans and banks
19 freshman by the subtraction of james, boyd, badger, and roback

Add that up = 78 (before all the extra math this fall/summer we had 83 on signing day, enough room to add/but got burnt by ego ferguson and christian jones). Again thank you Charlie Weiss for getting us up to the limit of players.

So next year we will have 58 scholarship players (+up to 9 5th years).

Add our 19 commits = 77.

If we can keep whoever we want of those 9 5th yrs...assume Gray, Dever, H Smith, Nuss, Ragone, and Nwanko are kept (6), probably in that order of importance.

That brings us to 83 total. And until something happens to change my mind otherwise, floyd is gone...82.

Now a transfer from out of no where, one of the qbs, nix (god I hope not!), or rudolph going pro could change the number...along with thousands of other possibilites.

Bottom line................my opinion is we take 3 more (S, WR, best available)

Unless Nuss moves to Guard next year I do not think he will be back with Nichols and Lombard. Also assuming we keep the recruits we have now, I see no way Nwanko stays either. We have Kona Schwenke and 3-4 very good DE's coming in. Ragone will be questionable. Probably will be determined after we see him on the field finally IMO.

I'm always concerned about the bigs. Dever, Cave, Robinson, Martin return on the starting O-line. Watt is poised to move in for Stewart. That's one set. Let's say, in all probability, that Nichols and Lombard are ready. Nichols is a tackle, but Lombard can be either a tackle or a guard. Someone has to be back-up center: maybe Golic is fine. That still leaves two spots on the two deep. Nuss and Romine are already in those two spots, and as far as I can see Kelly is happy with them. So, I believe we "keep" both Nuss and Romine. Any deviation from that strategy must come from a belief that Hegarty and Prestwood [or whomever] will come in ready for PT as frosh. I doubt that Kelly will want to roll those dice unless the prospect is out-of-sight. On the other hand, at tight end we are powerful looking. If Rudolph stays then he and Eifert are tops in the country. Even if Kyle doesn't stay, Welch is a superior prospect. And Koyack could easily be a frosh-ready player. I'd regretfully say goodbye to Ragone, but if he stays God bless him and best wishes.

Alex Bullard could potentially fill in too on the O-line.

DaVaris should know soon. Does anyone know if the SAT is now like the GRE/GMAT/etc where you get your raw score on the computer screen but your analytical score is then evaluated and all together the final scoring for each section is mailed to you. Also I just checked out his stats, doing a good job all over the places this year (passing, rushing, receiving/defense), 8 TD's through 3 games.

I love where we stand with Lyons and Im glad he had a good visit to South Bend. Call me crazy but for me the biggest recruit left on the board is Christian French. The guy is a FREAK athlete. Having him in that LB class with Kendall Moore, Prince Shembo, Anthony Rabasa, Clay Burton, Jarrett Grace, Ben Counsell, Carlo Calabrese, Manti Teo....... are you kidding me. Tell me Christian wouldn't be the perfect safety or OLB with this defense. The guy runs a 4.4 forty. My top five look like this:
1. Christian French
2. Wayne Lyons
3. Davaris Daniels
4. Savon Huggins
5. Miles Shuler

The alleged experts on recruiting also very much like what Staff Kelly is doing. Scout ranks us #5 in the nation. Rivals ranks us #6. ESPN is slow to react, but had us as #9 BEFORE the Atkinsons and Stephon Tuitt made their decisions. From dead reckoning by me, it seems that even ESPN will be forced to bump us up to #5 or #6. We're all smart enough to know that such spectacular ratings aren't necessarily a given to produce championship performance on the field. But we have a Coach who is a proven genius at "coaching up" players to their potentials. Starting from this elite base talent level represented by players like Koyack, Hegarty, Tuitt, Hayes, the Atkinsons, Aaron Lynch and on and on [forgive me, unnamed young supermen, but listing everyone will take the whole page], Kelly & Company will do astonishing things that all of us will be driven crazy waiting for that day to come.

ESPN bumped us up to #8 today.

It is hard to estimate who will be "kept" as 5th years...too many factors go into the equation ie: draft status, graduate school admission, players desire if projected on the two deep, etc..

Our O line will replace Stewart with Watt. With Nuss's ability to play the guard position, he will definitly be asked to come back. Regardless how "ready" Lombard, Nichols, and Bullard are, we need numbers up front. Hence our coaches recruited enough kids to add 4 to the position that tragically lost one in the previous cycle.

LT: Martin, Hegarty
LG: Watt, Lombard
C: Cave, Golic
RG: Robinson, Nuss
RT: Dever, Nichols

(throw in Hanratty, Prestwood, Bullard, Clelland, and Carrico somewhere)

Center and NT recruting will be important for 2012 class, but we may have established a 3 deep...

I am going to guess the last three spots go to Daniels, Wayne Lyons, and Ishaq Williams. It would be a great way to round out a really good recruiting class.

we are getting committs from big time d line recruits for the first time in 20 year so imo this is a GREAT class! if only it were NSD!

With three to four spots left, I think a lot of whats left has to do with winning. We need to win at least 9 games. This is the best defensive class that I can remember for this program. If the class were to end right now it would be amazing. I think it will be a while before we get another big commit because we dont have another big weekend this season as far as recruiting goes.
1.Christian French- I think if we get Christian French back on campus for an OV that we will lock him up. IMO he is the most important recruit left on the table. ESPN has him listed at 6'5 and 220 pounds while running a 4.4. Sounds like an amazing prospect for a WR or OLB.
2.Ray Drew- Notre Dame is the only team in the country recruiting him for an OLB position. He is ESPN's number 3 overall player in the country and for good reason. I thought for awhile that he was a long shot but with the recent commit of Stephon Tuitt, his interest has spiked. If we get him on campus for an OV, then we put ourselves in good shape.
3. Wayne Lyons- Rivals and ESPN have both put out articles that say Wayne Lyons is very impressed with Notre Dame. He is also close with Ray Drew and Stephon Tuitt so hopefully thats a draw.
IMO I think we end up with:
Christian French
Davaris Daniels
Ray Drew
Miles Shuler
Other players that I really think still have legit interest:
Wayne Lyons
Savon Huggins
Denzel Perryman
Ishaq Williams
Troy Niklas
Antonio Richardson

It will be tough to take both French and Drew in my opinion. We already have 3 standout OLBs and it seems the staff like these players at that position. I know French has expressed desire to play on the offense side of the ball at WR too. But if we get a commit from Daniels to go with Atkinson, we will be up to 10 scholarship WRs on the roster next season (11 if Floyd stays).

We will get one at these positions:

WR: Daniels, Shuler, (if Daniels score is not high enough, we offer Amir Carlisle)
S: Lyons, Lyons, Lyons...we will not accept a commit here until Lyons pops for us or someone else, Aldridge
OLB: Drew, French, IShaq

I am not sure where Denzel Perryman, Savon Huggins, and Troy Niklas fit into this.

2011 will be our best recruiting year in the last 10. How long has it been since we had our pick of 4/5 star recruits? Go Irish!

With the amount of time BK's defenses stay on the field, you take both French and Drew if the option is there. French can play either of the OLB positions or safety. If Drew were to commit tomorrow there is no way they stop recruiting French at the very same position. The defense needs more team speed and French provides that and athleticism. Are you saying they wouldnt take Ishaq Williams if either Drew or French commit? Im not expecting to get all three but if two of them wanted to commit, Notre Dame wouldnt pass on them.
Notre Dame would accept a commit from Aldridge tomorrow if it were to happn. Lyons may be there number one safety, but Aldridge is not a bad player and Notre Dame would take that commit immediatly.
Im not sure what you mean by "fit into this." Notre Dame would save a spot for Savon if they were in the lead winding down towards NSD. I put Niklas on there because he is down to Notre Dame and Stanford. And Denzel Perryman is coming for a visit with his highschool teammate and Notre Dame verbal commit Anthony Rabasa. I think that goes a long way.

Nailed it:

The staff wants another WR and OLB plus we NEED a Safety. Honestly we can only take one of IShaq, Drew or French.

If we have room after that, and thats a big if, then maybe we lookat Huggins or Nilas but thats a stretch

Agree. But it is a problem, and problems suck.
