Well Montana basically says that Rudy didn't work any harder than anybody else and that when the team carried him off the field it was because they were just playing around. Anyways someone else on the 1975 team came out and said that he was disappointed Montana said such a thing and that when the team carried him off of the field it was because he finally got on the field after working so hard.

Over the last week I have lost a lot of respect for Montana because of the way he was at the ND Purdue game. He told a lady to get lost in front of us because she was trying to take a pic of him, then I was told he blew off some "kids" at Hammes bookstore that were asking for an autograph. I heard several bad things from the fans around me at the player walk. Seems like quite the asshole to me.

Athletes in general are assholes. There are exceptions to the rule (Brady Quinn, Dayne Crist), but the majority are egocentric douchebags.

I've heard that Rudy himself is an arrogant tool in real life.

Dude... Brady Quinn was a total asshole. And I actually think there are just as many assholes who are non-athletes as there are that are athletes. The difference is that non-athletes can't get away with being dicks all the time so they don't show it as often.

I met former NY Mets pitcher, and current announcer Ron Darling in a bar around the corner from work in NYC. He was an absolute gentleman. I just went over to shake his hand, and thank him for 1986. As I went to walk away, he stopped me, and thanked me for remembering, and engaged me in converstion for a few minutes. Very down to earth, very real. I'm friends with a former NY Giant as well (he's in my avatar on the left) Kory Blackwell, and he's as regular guy as you could ever meet. It's like any other profession, your gonna have tools and cools.

I've always heard that Montana is a jerk. I loved what Kelly said about this on the Dan Patrick Show. Basically, he thinks Montana needs attention because he is pushing his shoes pretty hard. God, I'm developing a man cruch on Kelly. Blunt guy. And Montana's kid is on his team.

Rudy is a tool. He talked at our dorm my first or second year and I couldn't get over how much of a spazzy tool he was. I remember hearing he couldn't keep a roomate for more than a semester because he was so annoying, don't know if there is any truth to that. I'm going back a good fifteen years but the experience left quite a cynical impression.

I already thought the character in the movie was pretty annoying but to see the real deal in person makes me think Sean Austin was toning down the character instead of hamming it up.

Montana is a tool to bring it up that way though.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with Montana's comment (according to the link posted above). I think the title of this thread and the interpretation of Montana'a simple comment is more obnoxious than anything Montana said, and I find it odd that ND fans would rush to the support of an exaggerated story from a movie over a proven winner in Montana. Hell, Rudy didn't even have a solo tackle in the end. Even that was exagerrated. Just look at the actual footage.

In a way I agree. But, like I posted, why say it? I guess, maybe if he was asked about it, I don't know about that. But to say that "He worked hard...but no harder than anyone else" is just demeaning and very unprovable. I just don't understand why such a player from Notre Dame would want to take down a movie about his own school. It just gives our haters more fuel and now they'll say "one of your own doesn't even believe...yada yada" ya know?
Could be true sure...but I still just don't get the point!

Its a shame that Athletes dont remember where they came from. Personally its not the first time I have heared that about Montana, Hank Aaron blew me off when I was a kid at spring training one year. I was the only kid there and asked him for an autograph, and he said "Aint got time take off !". People like that I wouldnt piss on if they were on fire.
Montana is dead to me .....

Dont ever forget where you came from.

Do we really need this kind of "controversy" during a big game week?

Joe seems to distance himself from the University, almost intentionally. He doesn't feel like an ND brother as say, Tim Brown, Rocket Ismail, etc. He may have been bigger than the game at times, but don't act that way. Get a sideline pass and stay out of the stands.

Joe is a good guy but he is not a personality... meaning he has never been comfortable being "Joe Montana"... I think he just shoots from the hip sometimes according to mood the way most of us tend to do... most peole of celebrity don't have that luxury

I wonder how much of it is the situation at hand. I noticed that someone thought Quinn was "toolish." I know what kind of difference he has made with his charitable works. I mean really done some things beyond the call. He has put his money where his mouth is and he has been there, in ways I just don't think a horse’s ass would. Must of been a bad day or time. Just like with the Montana article. I thought the author was the one who designed the “assholishness” into it. Montana could have said a wide range of things that were left "on the cutting room floor."

I have had a couple of experiences with celebrity athletes: Chipper Jones spent an evening playing video games with my oldest sons, (what a neat, regular guy!); knew a whole bunch of the Bulls, as members of a club I provided service for, (always gentlemen); but I think everyone has one good experience. Mine was with Jeff George in the Indy area. He was a customer, so I took one for the team, but I am certain I never saw a more arrogant person with less intelligence, ever. It went on for hours. So, I can relate.

My best was at this year's Blue & Gold game. My youngest son, who is a real crackerjack, was able to run into Kyle McCarthy and TJ Jones. They were both incredibly personal. I was impressed.

Football for the fans and the pageantry...
Hockey for the athletes personalities.

(prize inside!)

Sorry, couldn't help it.

Nice post. Nice story too.

I was also thinking it is the fault of the author who sensationalized the entire article toward the negative.

I have had a couple of experiences with celebrity athletes:

I once chilled with Snoop Dog for a short while in San Diego (no, really) and he is that guy who is all over USC sidelines... does that count as athlete???

I've heard that Montana hates the public aspect of his celebrity and enjoys his privacy. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting that, he may just go about it in the wrong way sometimes and come off as arrogant. I understand where he is coming from though. I was in the same graduating class as one of his daughters at ND and at Junior Parents' Weekend and during graduation events, he was constantly hounded by people. He was trying to be a father and enjoy the time with his family and not being friendly was the only way he could accomplish that.

On a side note, I went to the Linebacker Lounge last year in late December. Chris Zorich was there and my friend and I went up to him and talked to him. Awesome guy that enjoyed talking to fans. We ended up hanging out with him for an hour or two and he bought us several drinks.

That I would meet Snoop and that he would actually give me the time of day for a few??? Yeah I also met Jack Osbounre and Usher the same night... it was leading up to Super Bowl week in SD... Jack and Snoop were cool as fuck and my friends and I got to chill a bit with both for a bit... Usher............. I guess it wasn't his shit that stank.

There were many inaccurate depictions in the movie. MANY.... Joe is spot on.

Rudy

Also things I've heard from "Rudy" himself in a speech here in the Burbs of Cleveland one year....

There was no Pete...This is false and a representation of a bunch of people in his life, some who told him he couldn't do it and others who said he could.

There was no Fortune(The maintenence guy)....He was a compilation of a bunch of people.

Agree...I thought Joe gave Rudy some credit for his work ethic...and did not seem mean spirited to me...

I think Joe does not have an affinity for lore...especially since his legend is all true...

Do I think he could have danced around it and left it alone...yea...but I don't think thats Joe.

A couple of problems with that link Boss.

Link says "Problem is before 1993, the only time the two school met was in 1928. "

But I believe they played each other for 12 years straight beginning in 1981.

"No other Irish player has been carried off the team since Rudy"

Such an insignificant and silly point, but Allen Pinkett was carried off the field after a win at home. Don't remember the year or the game, but it may have been against Penn St.
