Based on our current roster and the current forecast of the program, how soon are we going to field a team talented enough to compete with other elite teams for the national title?

If Michael Floyd and Kyle Rudolph do not go pro following the 2010 season, I think we may have a legitimate shot in 2011. Dayne Crist has a year under his belt, we still have talented running backs in Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray, we would have Michael Floyd, Tai-ler Jones, Shaq Evans at wide receiver, Kyle Rudolph at tight end, a couple of offensive linemen returning (Robinson, Cave, possibly more depending on who plays). Defensively, we'd have Kapron Lewis-Moore and Ethan Johnson, capable replacements for Ian Williams (Newman, Nix), Te'o, Fleming, Filer, McDonald at linebacker; Gary Gray (remember, he's a redshirt), Robert Blanton, Jamoris Slaughter, Harrison Smith (redshirted, remember) in the secondary. That's a lot of good returning talent, wouldn't you say?

If not 2011, we probably won't see another title caliber team until 2013 or somewhere further in the decade.

I really have no idea. We KNOW we have a FEW talented individual players on the field, and a TON of underperforming players. I think we will see just how talented this team is this year. I think this year we will win 8 or 9 games. Next year i think a legit BCS game shot. Ill say 2013 is a title year if all goes well

Couldn't agree more... This is an extremely talented group. It's just a matter of bringing in the supporting pieces/depth to put our boys over the top.

I think 2011 is a little optimistic for a national championship run, we'll have a better idea what Kelly can do on the big stage after this season though. 2013-14 would be my guess at this point.

Usually by year 3 coaches are able to infuse some of their recruits and really have a grasp on the team so i say Dayne's senior year. If Kelly is the coach every one expects he should maximize the talent that is already on the team, add depth and coach them up

With Kelly's track record and the under acheivers on this team , I wouldn't knock someone for guessing 2011. The offense still needs to adjust to the new system, I don't think that will be an issue, but the defense really needs to stand up.
Playing the teams on our schedule is one thing. Stepping up to the BCS level and a NC game, you aren't in Kansas anymore Toto. And if our defense still stinks then we'd get opened up like Fla did to Cincy.

What coach that has won a National Championship at Notre Dame, has not done so by his third year?

2010? Am i living in a dream land, probably, but I think if Dayne is the leader they say he is, our defense will be better, we have a 2 of the top receivers in the country, counting Rudy. and our defense will be better, maybe we sneak into the NC game and win.......just saying, probably a long shot, but the schedule is accommodating.

We have changed alot of little things that will help. I think the lunch table and training regiment will do wonders for our team. To be a national contender alot of things have to happen. U have to be a little lucky and very prepared. I think it's a matter of whe. Not if. No injuries is a huge thingvand with a good roster coming in ww could do some things considering the schedule. I think 2011 could be a special year if everyone returns.

I f we win these 3 games.

Michigan, U.S.C and Navy I will be the happiest Irishman in New Hampshire. We have to beat Navy though my wife will kill me if I kick in another t.v.

... my wife will kill me if I kick in another t.v.

Here's the deal: watch the games at the local pub/sports bar. Heave an empty pint glass (Guinness is my recommendation) at the 60" HD flat screen there. Then your wife will have a TV to watch at home while the paper work is processed and you post bail.

OK, on to plan B. Plan A, actually: We take out Michigan 35-10, Navy 45-12 and USC 38-24. That way you're TV, your clean police record and your marriage will remain intact. And I'll be one happy Irishman in Minnesota liftin' a pint your way.

I hate to sound like one of the stereotypical "arrogant" notre dame fans, but i see Kelly lifting the crystal ball in 2011. He just has that drive and intensity, i know a player for ND he says Kelly works the hell out of them. Every single time he's been interviewed he speaks of playing at a national level immediately. I foresee 9-3/10-2 and the Champs Sports Bowl. then 11-1 en route to the BCS title game or Fiesta Bowl

I think I broke a trash can after the Navy game. Though, it might have been the Connecticut game. Either way, it's not as bad as smashing my TV set.

As a response to the question, I think we'll defenitely have a chance in 2011. The schedule doesn't look too bad (Though it isn't finalized), and we should have some great returning talent. I can see us making a run for it all that year.

I have been playing this game since 1994ish... and I am seriously tired of it...

just my personal thoughts on it...

we'll win when we win... if we ever do.

Until then I root for our boys either way.

2013 or 2014 you guys should be in really good spot to be a serious contender.

Fair enough, and the way you guys are going, by 2012 or 2014 you guys should be out from under the NCAA's wrath with Jim Harbaugh as your coach and a .500 record will be seen as 'up-and-coming'.

Welcome to the site. If you're here to troll and talk crap, your stay will be short-lived. There are several network sites that allow for that, Like Rivals, ESPN, Scout, etc. This is strictly a site for Irish fans, and/or those who want to discuss football maturely. If you want to get into pissing matches with Irish fans, well, you've come to the wrong place. Not saying that it's not fun, but this just isn't the spot.

I can tell by your sig though, it seems like you're in here to troll. We'll see...

I would like to see Harbaugh at Michigan. I think he is a good coach and a great recruiter. It will be good for their university and even better for the rivalry. Now back to the topic..... I think if Floyd and Rudolph stay for next year, our O could be very dangerous! We will loose Kamara, Stweart, and Mondo. I like all three, but I do think we have the back ups to replace them in 2011. On D, we loose Ian, BSmith, and Walls. Some good talent leaving, yet a very good nucleus remains in tact. But, before I get too excited, I would like to see how this year goes. If we win 8-10 games this year, watch out 2011. GO IRISH

Nice changing it  I didn't notice it until i came back on here.

No I am not here to troll at all. I just was interested what the guys on the other side were talking about. To join in on the conversations with people from the other side that don't use F*** every other word when talking to a rival (ohio state).

BTW the 38-34 was just putting some gas on the fire that is the rivalry.

Welcome aboard then. It is always nice to have a different point of view from a different fanbase.
