Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Young defensive tackles lead East Lansing event

Glenbard West (Ill.) 2012 product Tommy Schutt also attended. The 6-feet-3, 302 pound prospect reports an early offer from Illinois. He lists Michigan State, Northwesters, Iowa, Purdue and Duke as other schools that are actively recruiting him. He plans to camp this summer at Ohio State and Iowa.

"He has been starting at defensive tackle for one of the top programs in the state since his sophomore year," Rivals.com Illinois recruiting expert Tim O'Halloran said. "He will be very highly sought after, and maybe the top prospect in Illinois for the class of 2012.

Taylor Bell's playoff football notebook :: FOOTBALL :: YourSeason

Glenbard West’s defense, led by linebackers Connor Loftus and Tim Hollowed, cornerback Jack Marston (seven interceptions) and 6-3, 280-pound sophomore lineman Tommy Schutt, hasn’t permitted a point in the last 10 quarters.

Coach Chad Hetlet predicts future stardom for Schutt, who has 13 sacks. As a freshman, he weighed 240 pounds and played wide receiver and running back. A superb athlete, he also starts on the varsity basketball team

Probably because ND isn't recruiting DTs in this class. It's not a priority in this class. Scholarships are limited and DE and OLB types that fit the 3-4 are offers. If they offer a DT it's because the believe he's flexible enough to play DE.

ND will recruit a NT for the 2012 class with Williams leaving

Sounds like Illinois will have two outstanding DT prospects for the class of 2012. Schutt and Vincent Valentine for Edwardsville High School. Vince is 6'3 310 and is very mobile, but more importantly he is an even better person. He already has verbal offers from Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa and Kstate just to name a few. OU is the favorite because he recently got a personal tour of campus with Coach Stoops and Vince loved him. I would like to see ND get involved with big Vince.

Tabbed as a four star in the scout 2012 rankings. We need a nose tackle to replace Williams, the staff has got to be all over this kid.

I think we need to pursue this guy hard. Seems like a great prospect for NT and has very nice size.

There is another NT/DE in Chicago we are going after that looks really good. IrishIllustrated just posted the interview by Pete Sampson of the Head coach. The kids name is Faith Ekakitie
6'3, 280, beast mode. Jason_357 can maybe do a profile on him i gotta go but he's got offers and getting interest. I will take him over schutt or valentine.

Faith is a defensive end, and he played middle linebacker last year. He's also a much lower regarded prospect than Schutt. He doesn't have the build to become a space eater like Nix and Williams.

Tommy Schutt has got to be one of our top targets for next year. If you are going to be a good 3-4 team you have to bring in a high end space eater every second year. We got Nix last year, we don't have anyone this year, we have to get one next year.

Why is it every other year? seems like you would want to have more than 2 NT on campus at a time. and especially if we are recruiting elite ones and they leave for the pros early we'd be stuck with only 1 NT who would be a sophomore. I must be missing something right?

We'll prob go after two in 2012. I love NT recruiting.

I meant at a minimum, not a max. I'm really worried about our NT recruiting in general, and even for 2012.

I'd love to see us get Valentine and Schutt, two local kids who are both NT prospects (Valentine might be a better pure NT from the looks of it), but that's not easy to do. We haven't go many offers out to NTs, so maybe the staff is confident with Schutt. Get a stud this year to go with LNIII and I'll feel a lot better about the world.

A poster on II has connections to several coaches in the area and he has heard that Schutt is an ND lean at the moment.

That's great news. He's be a phenominal way to start the class. It's the smart move for him to make - play NT in the 3-4 at ND and your odds of making the NFL are stupidly high.

Per ESPNU's Chris Pool via

Twitter.http://twitter.com/Chris_Pool

@Chris_Pool bleacher report Top 100 for 2012. #19 DT Tommy Schutt (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West). Agree. Not a more dominating DT since Chris Zorich! about an hour ago

Seems like he may have taken down the post though after I checked the link. Liked the ND connection, however.

Per Scout, he will be attending Ohio State's JR Day on Feb. 26th. Since ND's JR Day is the same day, that would take him off the "maybe" list.
