Best/Worst Charlie Weis Calls

Figured we should move away from the thread about the players who make us wince, and instead to plays called by Weis that have either made us wince or think he's a genius.

Best Call: QB sneak on 4th and 1 from own 30 against USC in 2005-showed Weis has balls

Worst Call: Fake punt against LSU on first possession of Sugar Bowl

Honorable Mention: Navy game 2008-1st quarter is about to end and Weis has Golden Tate lined up in shotgun as the qb with Clausen split out wide. First time all year he has shown this formation. Quarter ends before play is snapped, Navy has time to discuss and strategize about the formation, ND comes out in exact same formation at start of 2nd quarter, and Tate run is stopped for no gain.

Worst: A litany of 4th down disasters, most notably in the Fiesta Bowl in the first quarter on OSU's 10, fake punt vs LSU, last year vs Pitt at midfield in the final minute.

Honorable Mention: 4th and 1 against Pitt, keeping Golden Tate off the field in 2007, throwing a deep fade to a 5'9" David Grimes against USC last year...

Best Play: Any 4th down that worked.

technically you are correct......but at Notre Dame we must beat USC, Michigan, Michigan State........and then go on and beat a Florida or LSU.......in a big bowl game.......the man came in with a lot of hype......he hasn't won a big bowl game yet.

additionally, he lost to syracuse at home in a snowy cold ball game.......syracuse plays in a dome......we should have won that game....we were at home for Christ sakes playing a team that has had just as many problems as we have had.

I don't believe he came in with a lot of hype. He wasn't even our first choice. The really big point was that he is an ND alumni. He did have a lot to say in the beginning and didn't really back it up. Hopefully that changes this year.

Best Call: The HAW bowl game, a fuckin master piece. Even the dreaded screen pass to AA for TD was a great call, perfect call.

Worst Call: Letting Demetrius Jones think that he was the starter.

With that said, I did like the integrity he showed with Pass Right.

Worst call: any of 4th down calls in horrible field position in which we didn't punt like we should have. Occasionally is okay, the amount of times we have is ridiculous.

And that has nothing to do with the topic. The topic was, good/bad play calls by CW. To say he hasn't had any good play calls means you weren't cheering AT ALL FOR ANYTHING during his first 2 years. It means his first game against Pitt when we were underdogs and nobody knew what to expect, you weren't cheering your ass off when the Shark scored his first TD under CW. It means you weren't cheering at all when we shocked the college football world and beat Mich later that year (they were ranked #3 at the time of the game). You weren't cheering at ANY time during the Tennessee beat down, not when Brady was hitting Stovall, not when Shark made that incredible catch down the sideline when he somehow got a foot down inbounds, nor when Walker was zigzagging his way to the endzone. You were just sitting on your chair bitching that even though we scored, we should have done it a different way, your way I presume.

It also means that you never cheered, not once, during the BushPush game. You weren't pumped whatsoever at all that game? Not even when USC took the lead in the 4th, we started on the 13 yard line, and went 87 yards down their f***ing throats and scored the go-ahead TD??? You were probably pissed b/c CW had the nerve to go 87 yards in only 2 minutes. I agree, what a horrible bunch of play calls!!!!!

I could go on, but you should get the point. The theme of the thread is not whether CW should be fired or not. There's tons of threads for that. It's not whether CW has won a big game or not. There's tons of threads for that too. It's not whether CW needs to have a great season followed by a bowl win. Dude, that's been discussed ad nauseum (sp). The point is, has there been ONE call that CW made that you liked? IF there is isn't, then you either didn't watch a game during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, or you were comatose at the time.

'Cause dude, there were plenty of times where CW made the perfect play call that the situation called for. There's also been plenty of times where he completely screwed up. Hence the title of the thread...

I have no doubt that Charlie wies will be a great head coach. I do wonder if he will become that coach at Notre Dame. I hope he does and everything is in place for him to do so this year, and continue to win. Remember Bill Bellicheck was someone who couldn't win at Cleveland.

You're right they were Ty's players. Then after those guys what did Ty have lined up??? NOTHING, the cupboard was dry. You are seeing Char's high notch recruits finally starting to age a bit this year...and it looks pretty promising. Let's see what he does with that then start to make some conclusions. I never had a good feeling with Ty, with Weis its different (even with the few shaky years) I think you give this guy a good 5-8 years and he will have something good going-it all starts with this season. Not to mention, how the frick many of these guys do we have back again next year?! MANY! Recruits have been good...I think we are headed in the right direction.
