And box out other conferences to maintain the circular reference. "oh Purdue lost to OSU so Arkansas losing to Purdue just proves how amazing they both are for showing up."

I don’t think the competitive argument really matters. They’ll find a talking point one way or the other. The expansion to 24 has now been paired by both commissioners with a a scheduling conversation. That means they are focused on lost revenue from one place (conference championships) needs to be made up another place (non con scheduling)

The collective viewership of an additional playoff round with 8 games, survive and advance, all of which are theoretically competitive since the top 8 teams have byes, played on college campuses (boosting local revenue generation)...... easily double the collective viewership creating more net revenue than the big four conference championship games in NFL stadiums playing for bragging rights.

These conferences have all gotten a taste of hosting a playoff game, not just $10s of millions in tickets/parking/concessions but the increased value of season tickets to lock up that potential home playoff seat too. Blame ND - Swarbrick said "OK we won't be first four" knowing we would host an epic for massive $$ we don't share and an experience owned by our turf, not the NFL property.

Based on what?

Unless you get some real helmet stickers slip into this game like a Texas versus USC let’s say, I disagree that the is will be the case. We’ve literally never had a CFB weekend where Georgia, Alabama, ND, OSU etc are almost all off. I’m not supremely confident the ratings match the stakes of the game without the helmets. And I don’t think the conferences all either.

Math? 8 games = 2x the touchpoints. Conference crossover, more eyeballs per game than a conference championship. Outside of B1G and SEC championships nobody really GAF. Even with the top two I'm just rooting for a meteor more than anything.

B1G, SEC, ACC and B12 title games would have at least one Duke vs Miami type snoozer in there to bring down the average. I might watch 6 hours of that combined 12 hour schedule block, probably less when a blowout inevitably happens. Usually rooting for a meteor when SEC is on.

8 game additional playoff and I am all over whoever is in my side of the bracket for starters. Every game is elimination, these dudes are pulling out all the stops and leaving it on the field. Gambling, 2x the games to wager on turns into 4x the parlays in play. I can reliably block off my day knowing I am immersed in CFB from noon to midnight without as much worry of a 3 hour stinker block. Cinderella doesn't care what ESPN dictates about the SEC or OSU, time to prove it on the field mofos!

So ACC Championship where loser goes home = snoozer

Playoff game where loser goes home = you’ll be watching all day.

Of the 8 games, they’ll slip a helmet sticker game somewhere in there, it’ll do well, but I just don’t agree Houston - Ole Miss is gonna do numbers simply because of the stakes.

Moron.

ND is the last team on earth that would have an issue with a 10 game requirement. Check your own conference mates

Wow. Is ESPN really getting all the rights? Nobody else stepped in? What a thread title @Dale
Don't think anyone else was allowed to step in. ESPN had the exclusive negotiating window, which got extended last week, and now looks like they have locked it up until the end of the primary contract.

I wonder how many that are in the 15-20 range this year that miss the playoffs with hot seat coaches are able to squeak out one more year at this news. Mainly thinking of you, Lincoln Riley

I have a hard time believing that ESPN is paying more than an auction between all the networks would result in.
