I never thought I would ask this question for my favorite college football team. But with 2026 and 2027 I am curious if that affects the budget for 2028? I know college football does not have a salary cap but I’m sure even Notre Dame has some sort of roster cap. Maybe some of the elites like a Notre Dame may not have a roster cap but instead, maybe just go on a recruit by recruit basis. Just not sure where to land my expectations.

I am going to be reasonable and and go into the 2028 recruiting year with the following lowered expectations:
- 1 5* DE
- 1 5* RB
- 1 5* CB who starts as a freshman
- 2 5* OL
and all other positions are high 4* (91-94 rated) and a cumulative class score of 299

Hall, Che, Prescott, McGee and Gray are composite 5 Stars in that list and these are super early rankings. ND will also undoubtedly host a handful of other 5 stars for games this season and visits next spring. We weren't even talking about guys like Olu and Simien as this time last year. A long way to go... These are just early traction guys.

I think Asher will be Florida / Miami at the end of the day. JMO. Don't get me wrong, I project ND to land 2-3 more high end edge players in the cycle, I just think they'll end up with us other guys.

When I watch Prock on film and look at him run play-action and keep his eyes down field from the pocket, he immediately reminds me of Jared Goff with the Lions. Now, Goff is 6'4 and Prock is more 6'2, but they play a similar style of game.

Just for the fun of it, below is my first attempt of the cycle at putting together a projected class. Of course, these only ever wind up being about half correct when predicted this early, but it's a fun thought experiment regardless. There will be 5-7 players whose names we're not even tracking at this point that will ultimately be part of the class.
As always, I try to balance being optimistic vs realistic and I try to be conservative in the quality and number of players. So here goes.

With current 247Composite rankings (manually putting 80.00 for the unranked Kajus and Davies), the 247Composite Team Ranking would be 315.46. And if I take away the 80.00 for the two above, the player average would be 95.16. Would be a pretty amazing haul.

Meant to post this but forgot. I follow Saratoga football on Instagram, which is where Toomey plays. ND alum Anthony Weaver was visiting and spoke to the team during workouts yesterday.

Yeah, it's a pretty optimistic haul on my behalf. As it stands, that class would only include two composite 3 star players (not inclusing the kicker) and history tells us that's probably unrealistic. For comparison, the current class has four composite three star players. The projected class also does not include any reclassifications from the 2029 cycle, which almost certainly seems unrealistic and as we've seen, those guys often get underanked after reclassifying, which could pull the score down some.
At which specific positions might I be a tad optimistic? I think that projecting ND to land both top 100 OL (Frierdich and VanBoening) out of Illinois might be a stretch. It also might be a overly optimistic to project the staff to land three top 100 corners (Thompson and the Woodward twins). Wide receiver is also always an adventure in Notre Dame recruiting.
On the flip side, I left multiple big time players off the list in an attempt to strike a realistic balance. I didn't project 5 star Edge Cam McGee out of Chicago to the class despite ND being heavily involved in that recruitment. The same is true of other stud edge players such as Asher Ghioto, Cassell Cruickshank, George Parkinson IV and Merrick Ham. It's another strong year at edge. Might ND try ti take 3 again? The staff is also in on heavy hitters at defensive tackle. Guys like Prince Che, Kellen Hall and RJ Wyms. Yet I projected none of them to the mock 2028 class. On the offensive line I projected ND to land no 5 star players, a year year after landing teo. I might be underselling the recruiting effort there. The same is true at safety / nickel, where I have them projected to land 3 quality guys, but no top 100 talents. Lastly, ND appears to be in on some big time WR talent, and I simpy guessed with top 100 Malachi Lee, but the staff is aiming higher with a trio of 5 stars in Jaylen Addai, Braylon Clark and Madoxx Davis in hopes of one of them becoming the position headliner.

A full year of parental leave with a 5 month old that takes multiple 1.5-2 hour naps per day will definitely lead to extra time. Trust me, you don't even know
