Ty Simpson sucks and wasting a top 15 pick on a nepo-QB while you are still in your Super Bowl "win now" window is wild. Of course McVay is pissed. Wholly irrelevant player eating cap space and contributing nothing.

Could've easily grabbed a WR, OL, or defensive player there.

Love and Price both being taken in the first round just gave Freeman and staff a shiny new recruiting tool. The last knock on ND was that they weren't able to get skill position guys drafted high enough. Not anymore. With everything else coming together recruiting-wise, this should help unlock the ability to go out and recruit whoever they want

I can see some logic in the GM mindset of "I don't plan on ever picking this high again, and good QBs are almost impossible to draft later" but it seems like such a bad call in practice especially for someone as unimpressive as Simpson. Then again Sam Darnold has won a SB and Kirk Cousins has had a good career so I might be a dumbass when it comes to QBs.

That is odd feedback considering I think his strength is more in coverage ability especially in zone

I think there is a lot of “white DB has to be good at tackling” in some Thieneman evaluations. And his counting stats are good tackle wise, but especially at Purdue having high tackle counts is not always a good thing at safety. Everyone else just stunk on that defense, opportunities a plenty when your F7 is doing nothing.

You have to absolutely love Simpson to not just go Beck or Nussmeier tonight instead

Both clearly have better upsides as passers than Ty Simpson (who has some pretty terrible advanced stats in some areas). Beck I wouldn't touch because of the decision making issues, but that's subjective.

I would bet dollars-to-donuts that one of Nussmeier, Green, Payton, or Klubnik has a better career than Simpson and you could've gotten three of those guys in the mid-to-late rounds.

Ty Simpson is gonna have some Tyler Buchneresque starting experience by the time he does anything for the Rams.

Agreed. He can also line up all over the place, and that's something the best NFL defenses all tend to have are guys like that.

He has to work on taking angles and engaging blocks when he's crashing down for run support. He's crazy stupid athletic, which is cool, but the football technique part is what needs refined. That can be taught and improved upon.

QB is such a crapshoot. Word was that Simpson had enough evaluation feedback to give him confidence to enter the draft. Paid off for him big time. Will he pan out? WTH knows? I thought Sam Darnold was going to be a better than average QB. Then he bounced around like a journeyman before hitting pay dirt w/ the Seahawks. Maybe it truly is what system a QB goes to & if he’s the right fit.

Two first round RBs and we barely ran it against Miami. Shame.
Barely ran it is the common denominator in the losses (A&M being the outlier because it's a game we actually won on the field but had it taken away)but it keepsrearing it's ugly head at the wrong time.

Leonard (12)
Love (11)

Rams GM Les Snead and Ty's dad Jason Simpson have a relationship. Snead helped advise the family when Ty was making a decision on whether or not to declare for the draft. Their friendship goes back before the draft.

I think these dots are being connected and it's bad optics to say the least. They reached here.

I keep seeing this brought up but to what end for Snead? I doubt Snead reached for Ty Simpson and put his entire professional career in jeopardy on a nationally scrutinized decision because he likes golfing with Jason Simpson.

My guess:

- Rams FO sees Simpson as a potential starting QB

- Stafford retires in 1 - 2 years

- Rams don’t plan to draft in Top 15 anytime soon

- McVay steps away/retires when Stafford retires

- FO secures a QB1 post Stafford and McVay when they otherwise would not be able to in 2027 or 2028 Draft and pissing off McVay does not matter. Continue to compete in 2026, 2027 and beyond with no rebuild. Reduces ceiling for 2026 but elevates floor for 2028.

I don't know. He just signed a 4 year extension in February that is reportedly over $25M total and guaranteed. Timing seems interesting. Wealth and nepotism are the American way.

Maybe he sees something in the skills of his friend's son that nobody else does. It's not the first time a team has done something crazy like this. Who knows what kind of intel they were getting.

Dodger's point was Simpson got graded out well enough to come out into the Draft. A good amount of that feedback came from Snead. Simpson also turns 24 later this year and has only been a college starter for one season.

There's a great deal to unpack here. They're a top draft headline after last night and rightfully so. Not for positive reasons either.

Bruce Feldman says a thing and highlights of the 2024 Notre Dame vs Purdue game surface. I love it. The NFL Draft is pure sports junk food that I crave. That we all crave. 3 hours of programming that could be an email. Balls.

There are two college programs that do things NFL style defensively the most when it comes to concepts and disguised covreages: Oregon and Ohio State.

I'm just really happy that Bears GM Ryan Poles isn't friends with Ken Thieneman.
