Unfortunately, I'm very aware.

Grew up in a grass roots non-denom family (not the mega church types). Extended family are blended variations of "low-Church" Prots. My wife and her entire family are Catholic. I've been attending mass off an on for 15+ years, now. Confirmed Catholic last Easter. You would've thought I just bought a one-way ticket to Hell based on how I get treated at some family functions. With that said, my parents (especially my dad) have come around a ton. We even have meaningful conversations about what Catholics "actually believe" in order to dispel the strawman misconceptions and blatant lies. I believe he and I have grown closer lately, despite religious differences, due to my conversion.
My mom prays for my soul and thinks I am leading my kids to hell. She is still waiting for the rapture but for my sake she hopes it is delayed so i can come to the true belief.

I don't mean to pry, but can I ask you why? What is it that Catholics do or aren't doing that gets her to think our souls are damned? lol

Yeah it’s really not that deep in my camp. My mom and step dad are atheists but we never talk about it. Dad’s side is nothing Catholic either although I do have a cousin in Little Flower (blocks away from HS #1). She’s not Catholic however, just trying to stay out of IPS.

I think I’ve shared here before that my God Father’s dad was a US Indy survivor. Dude swam with the sharks and I’ve heard the story from his mouth many times.

The atheists I’ve met, known, been fraternity brothers with, and befriended over the years just have a disconnect with how God can let the events of the world transpire without intervention on their behalf. They’ve either not read or ignored the Old Testament and how God allowed even his chosen people to be subject to all manner of famine and strife.

Their view of God is that he’s some sort of benevolent being without acknowledging that “love” doesn’t always equate to saving from difficulty or hardship.

IMO, I think a lot of Protestants believe Catholics live by the "I can sin anytime I want and will be forgiven once I go to confession" like it's a get out of jail free card.

Works based salvation and Mary along with all the Saints and idols yada yada yada. But if you answer all those, then they have a whole a whole host of inconsequential differences.

It’s literally what they’ve been pushed on in the evangelical church. I used to be evangelical, and I used to hear it.

I spent hours debating my family and answered all the questions name showed in scripture how we arrived at what we believe. By in the end, it doesn’t matter because we’re going to hell.

Well, I’m an atheist. There are several of us on this board. I was raised Catholic, Mass every Sunday, Catholic school 6th-12th grade, CCD 1st-5th grade and I never saw any proof of God. But if believing in God gets you through the day, makes you a better person, or prevents you from murdering me…

Atheist or agnostic?

Yup. I was waiting for you to chime in. Your perspective is interesting to me.

Chuck told my dad that this is no hotel. We don’t just let anybody in. 🖕 Yes they do, if they can play.

I'm a Protestant (Lutheran--don't burn me pls). Not all of us are like this!
This. I prefer to practice my faith differently, otherwise I’d be catholic, but the amount of fellow prots I’ve encountered that view Catholics as anything other than brothers and sisters in Christ first and foremost is incredibly small,…

Lazy argument IMO (From them, not you).

So protestants don't sin? I've never met a priest or deacon who didn't freely admit that even they sin and that it is inevitable.

If they do, are they automatically damned? Without confession, how do they absolve sins, understanding that all humans are imperfect beings and mistakes happen?

These are, of course, rhetorical questions towards you irish#1, I'm just pointing out the flaws

My sophomore year, the fastest kid on the football team was a transfer who had been expelled from Perry. Chuck was the vice principal at the time.

I don’t know man but I had a chair in Chuck’s office. Punarelli and Wirtz were keeping me on the good side.

I know for a fact that fuck said that I wasn’t Catholic enough for RHS whatever that means. And then he dropped that hotel comment and dad was not happy. I was asked to leave…

…enter Wirty. I got the call the next day.

This is from Sophomore year at Tech. @MacIrish75 will appreciate when Tech was playing for a National Championship every year.

Chuck didn’t like that I broke every school record at RHS. Didn’t like east siders.

What has Niele said about Catholicism?
Nothing negative. She's been pretty open in the past about going to ND and coaching there because of her faith. She has spoken at Catholic organization events in the past as well, which is generally not something that non-Catholics are granted. She prays at the grotto with some regularity. She is godmother to one of Kevin McGuff's children.

Again, Jaden is an adult. He and his wife are born-again, and went down that path within the past couple of years as adults who made their own decisions. This isn't about Niele.

Kinda wild how both of them went to Catholic high schools, Catholic colleges and then spent most of their professional lives working at Catholic universities. They must really hate Catholicism.

I think I would consider myself agnostic, so I know very little on the topic... but isn't it reversed in that the protestant thought is that your sins can be washed away just by simply saying you believe in Christ. Where Catholics at least make you "works" for it? Sorry for the pun, delete if insensitive.

People make it sound like the guy is having a mental meltdown, if he is, what I'm saying would obviously not apply...

But I'm a pretty active Catholic and I don't mind when people say stuff like "Catholicism is a false religion. And is not the true Doctrine of Christ. [It] does not lead to salvation in Jesus Christ.”

I'd much rather have someone that their and my faiths seriously enough to think doctrines can be wrong or right and that the truth matters. I am much more worried about people who some how believe in Christianity but aren't concerned about the truth of any of it... or who believe that it is a matter of life and death, but also something to keep to themselves because they don't want to come across as weird or bossy or judgmental. Don't be a jerk about it, but be real--it's important stuff.

Different Protestant sects have different views on what "sola fide" actually means. But anyone who thinks you can use confession as a get out of jail free card doesn't understand the requirements of the sacrament, which I believe was #1's point.

I am also an active Catholic and it does bother me, precisely because I believe the truth of Christianity matters and I because believe it’s wrong to call Christ’s church false.

Just get on the right side of the fence and God will lead from there. It’s really not that complicated. Just listen and he will lead…
