Judging by how both him and McDavid played it, I think they both thought MacKinnon was going to win the loose puck. I also think there was a miscommunication about who would get who on the backcheck ... McDavid probably should have taken the guy in the middle because that's the more dangerous threat of the two uncovered players but he took the short side guy instead-probably a mix of that was closer to the puck and McDavid's a puck hound (and see above re: thinking Mac would win it) and thinking Makar would have time to get the high guy.

That all being said...I don't think it's a coincidence that arguably the three best offensive talents in the world at their respective positions gave up that goal. A group of three that was less focused on outgunning the opposition going the other way probably gets back a little faster there.

I was 8 when I watched Team USA beat the Soviets in Lake Placid. Yesterday was very nostalgic for me. The US hockey team just seems to show up when we need them the most.
