Henry retained DB Coach responsibilities to some extent as DC, but the last two years their DBs Coach has been Corey Parker who had only one year of experience as a FBS CBs Coach. He was the River Rogue HS HC for 10 years. That probably was a poor hire.

PFF coverage grades for Illinois under Henry
2021 27th
2022 2nd
2023 107th
2024 25th
2025 100th

Not much to take from this other than I’d say he’s probably a great DB coach and not a great coordinator

Outside of the Illinois fans, this appears to be a good hire from the football people on Twitter. I’m excited and look forward to see how he does recruiting.
B.B. is a really good football coach and think he hires good coaches ..I believe they just lost their special teams coach to USC.

I’m only going to add that it’s pretty dumb to judge him as a position coach by his DC performance. Had Freeman promoted Mickens to DC and he bombed would he suddenly be a bad DB coach?

makes it quite ironic

Put this in the Mickens thread, but will leave it here as well.

Mickens was not the first choice of hires for most ND fans and he wound up being the best secondary coach in the country. That doesn't mean we'll see that happen again, but we might... Who knows?

Experience as a DC, but he won't have play calling responsibilities at ND. He'll be back to coaching DBs and contributing to the game plan, which appears to be his strong suit.

In 4 years at Illinois he produced 4 All Americans in the secondary...

Devon Witherspoon (1st team)
Sydney Brown (2nd team)
Kerby Joseph (2nd team)
Xavier Scott (Honorable Mention)

The following were also drafted in the NFL Draft...

Devin Witherspoon (1st round)
Jartavius Martin (2nd round)
Sydney Brown (3rd round)
Kerby Joseph (3rd round)

That's, objectively, a lot of individual production at a place like Illinois, where they're not exactly getting top talent. With an upgrade in talent, the likes of which exists in the ND defensive back room, he should continue / improve that success. Time will tell if he can have his group put it all together and play with cohesion the way Mickens was able to.

Staff cohesion is also a factor here. Henry played for Ash at Rutgers so there is a working relationship there. Freeman is big on that cohesion and bringing in guys that enjoy working with each other.

Tony Adams also went undrafted but has been a contributor for the Jets since 2022.

I just know that I always used to draft him in my Madden franchise.

This guy is really good. UIUC cranked out some DB talent to the NFL under his watch.

He might be a sucky DC, but I chalk that up more due to injuries than anything. This guy is highly respected.

Henry sent four DBs to The League in five years. At Illinois. He can develop guys.

He's from Immokalee, FL and knows the state. Partridge and Henry recruiting Florida is going to be fun.

Valai was the top target but I think they're getting a solid hire here. He's not being asked to be DC and, again, the Notre Dame brand means something. He's going to have access to recruits he would not otherwise have access to at Illinois. Really is that simple.

Nobody was shitting rainbows when Mike Mickens was hired. Suddenly all you arm chair athletic administrators were throwing extra job titles and money at him so he'd never leave. Life comes at you fast.

So his DB coaching seems sound, given that his good players played good.

He gets a chance to be a part of the defensive planning without having to call the plays while doing what he does best. So Freeman/Ash found a guy who can coach the DBs who was currently serving as the DC at a B10 school.

And people are finding fault with this? Lololol

Whether if it was Valai, Henry or someone else the new DB coach is coming into a great situation with who they will be coaching.

I like this hire. Just keep the same culture that Mickens created.

Pissing your pants with a flurry of negativity posts because of Twitter replies is “facts”? Most of which have nothing to do with being a DBs Coach?
What part of what I said was not a fact?

He’s been a bad DC
Illinois DBs have struggled recently
Illinois fans are rejoicing
Illinois beat rejoicing

All Facts

You also failed to mention that I said MF obviously knows more then I do and I’m sure it’ll work out.

ND should have one of the deepest DB rooms in the last 10 years in college football this coming year. At least top 10. I think just about anyone could coach this group.
