I'm sure it teaches you good lessons about discipline and self accountability, but wrestling is the only sport I would actively dissuade a kid from pursuing.

Between the weight cutting, the hardo personalities, and the physical deformities it produces, it doesn't seem like a ton of fun.

The amount of hardo personalities is no different than in any other sport. I assume you’re talking about cauliflower ears? Today’s headgear is designed to prevent those. I assume it’s the same in all states, but in Indiana Wrestlers have to take tests prior to the season to see if they can drop some weight and it restricts it. The old days of starving, running in plastic suits to sweat it out, etc. haven’t been around for a long time. If there is a coach pushing those measures they should be fired, but in all my years involved in the sport I’ve not seen it.

I’ve watched my little wrestler buddy fight dozens of times against tough mother f-ers and he took them down, controlled, and beat the shit out of almost all of them. It was only when we were outnumbered that I felt really scared.

Appreciate this insight. It's been a while since I've been around the sport so I'm probably out of touch. This guy just seems to embody the hardo personality that I referenced.

There are definitely similar sorts of jackasses in basketball, football, lacrosse, soccer, and baseball, so maybe I'm off on this one.
