Portal closes on Jan 16, with an extra window from Jan 20-24 for teams playing in the title. Not sure how ND's academic calendar changes things but it's been said here that our timeline is a few days shorter than others because of when the semester starts / last day to enroll in classes. There is no spring portal this year.

One has to wonder how MF and staff apparently neglected to get the necessary legwork in the portal done. It could work out miraculously, but the plan and execution has been poor.

Whatever you do, don't trust anyone on the beat right now. These guys aren't leaving visits and immediately calling reporters/insiders to give them their feelings. Neither is Freeman & Co leaking anything.

We just have to wait....and hope.

I don't ask for a lot. I just want the 3 from Bama, the 2 WRs from tOSU, the Pitt DT and maybe the IOL from Wisconsin.

That's only 7 players and probably 10-15 million in sponsored monies.

Then we can all relax and get back to the fact that we have an excellent recruiting class ready to join the fray in a few days.

In previous years, the portal window was the time where players could ENTER the portal... but they could sign after that period as well. Is that the same this year? Also, can players enter the portal now and enroll in the summer?

If so, this could actually drag on even longer. If I was a player at a high demand position, why not let teams continue to bid over me and hold out as long as necessary.

I've seen this asserted before and it doesn't make sense to me. Assuming that ND is paying players close to market rate for their positions, any non DL defensive player that gets upset about how much a DL portal guy is getting would talk to his agent about transferring. And his agent would tell him no, I can't get a LB or whatever DT money. DT's make 4x LBs on the open market.

This happens all over professional sports. Why is CFB any different?
I’m not so sure your assumption that we’re paying close to market rate for our internal players, if we’re defining market rate as the best offer they could get in the market.

The difference between this and professional sports is that in pro sports your entire roster doesn’t have the option of testing the market every year-they’re mostly on multi year contracts that are negotiated according to the rules of the relevant CBA. College football doesn’t have that structure, so we effectively have a roster of 100% free agents.

The portal dates only limit when players can enter the portal, it has no effect on the timeline to select a new school.
I know. But it'll start to slow down after the portal window closes and there aren't new guys entering the market. Also the looming threat of our good players jumping in will also recede.

Guys who are in the portal may well participate in spring ball and then withdraw their names right??
